Penn State head coach Joe Paterno suffered injuries to his right arm and hip at Sunday's practice, the athletic department announced in a press release on Monday. Paterno was "blindsided by a player running a drill on the practice field" but walked away after the incident, according to the release.

Tests are being conducted at Mount Nittany Medical Center to determine the extent of the injuries, the release said, but it does not look like surgery will be required, according to Penn State Director of Athletic Medicine Wayne Sebastianelli.

"I expect to be back at practice soon. I'm doing fine; tell everyone not to worry about me," Paterno said in the release. "I like the effort I have seen from the squad during our first few practices, but we have a long way to go to get ready for the schedule we have."

The 84-year-old coach still conducted Monday morning's coaches meeting via speaker phone from the hospital. Paterno was scheduled to speak to the media Thursday afternoon as part of the team's media day, which the release said will now be rescheduled.
