McGloin headed for Redskins' mini-camp

Former Penn State quarterback Matt McGloin will attend the Washington Redskins' mini-camp this weekend as he attempts to find a team that will allow him to compete for an NFL roster spot.

Former Penn State quarterback Matt McGloin received interest from eight NFL teams after the draft and will attend mini-camp this weekend with the Washington Redskins, his agent said Tuesday.

In accepting the Redskins invitation, McGloin declined the opportunity to sign a contract as an undrafted free agent with an unnamed NFL team, according to Mark Magazu II, McGloin's agent and the president of Atlas Strategies.

"Matt was grateful for the offer but the team had clearly established quarterbacks at all levels which would have made pathways difficult for Matt to catch on," Magazu said in a statement. "It was a gamble, but we think a wise one."

Magazu said McGloin chose the Redskins because "he admires the organization and the way they develop quarterbacks in that system."

While head coach Mike Shanahan has a long history of developing quarterbacks, he currently has several on his roster with the Redskins – Robert Griffin III, Kirk Cousins, Rex Grossman and Pat White.

Magazu said if McGloin is not offered a contract by the Redskins following the team's mini-camp, he will attend a different team's mini-camp the next weekend.

"We'll cross next week's bridge when we get there – and only if we have to," Magazu said. "Matt really wants to become a Redskin and it's his total mission and focus right now."

McGloin looks forward to the opportunity.

"Right now my mission is to prove that I can contribute," he said in the statement, "and hopefully be a Redskin next week, then next month, and fight to earn a spot on the team for the season. This is what I've fought my entire life to earn, and I'm going to make the most of it."

McGloin finished his career at Penn State ranked No. 1 in career passing touchdowns (46) and season passing yardage (3,266).
