Joyner named PSU acting athletic director
Former Penn State football and wrestling star Dave Joyner has been named acting athletic director of the university.
Dave Joyner, who starred in football and wrestling at Penn State from 1969 through 1972, has been named the university's acting athletic director, effective immediately.
Joyner takes over for Mark Sherburne, who returns to his role as associate athletic director. Sherburne filled in on an interim basis after Tim Curley was placed on administrative leave following his Nov. 5 indictment on perjury charges stemming from the child sexual abuse scandal.
Joyner, an orthopedic physician and a health care and business consultant, has been a member of the Penn State Board of Trustees since 2000. He will suspend his membership on the board to become acting athletic director, the university said.
In a statement issued Wednesday, Penn State president Rodney Erickson said Joyner "has served the board with integrity and … I am confident that he will bring that same integrity to his new role."
Joyner was named an All-American for his play during the 1971 football season and participated in the Hula Bowl. He also was honored as a National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame Scholar Athlete, and received a $7,500 NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship.
Joyner is a 1972 graduate of Penn State, and a 1976 graduate of Penn State's College of Medicine. He was honored as a Distinguished Alumna of Penn State in 1992.
He also worked with the U.S. Olympic Committee as head physician, chairman of its Sports Medicine Committee and vice chairman of its Anti-Doping Committee.
