Tom Bradley, who spent 33 seasons on the Penn State coaching staff and served the final four games of the 2011 season as interim head coach after the firing of Joe Paterno, will not be returning.
Bradley said Friday on Twitter, “Finished packing up my office late (Thursday) night. Walked out the doors proud with a lot of great memories and friends and a better man.”
Bradley spent the last 12 seasons as defensive coordinator, and was generally thought to be the heir apparent if and when Paterno stepped down as head coach. However, he received his dream job in a very unexpected manner – on Nov. 9 after the university’s board of trustees fired Paterno in the wake of the child sexual abuse scandal.
Bradley interviewed with the Penn State search committee seeking a permanent head coach. But once the job went last week to O’Brien, it was not anticipated that he would be back.
O’Brien spent last weekend interviewing members of the coaching staff, but Bradley told ESPN that he never spoke with the new coach. Bradley said that he will pursue other options.
Ted Roof, who was head coach at Duke when O’Brien was offensive coordinator there in 2005 and 2006, is expected to take over as defensive coordinator for the Nittany Lions.

That is poor that O'Brien did not talk with him last weekend, if nothing else, to get a pulse for the team and talk about players. Also, be a man and tell him he is not coming back. Another note, not sure about Roof. He went 1-22 as head coach at Duke, but he won a national championship two years ago as D-Cordinator at Auburn. 76er
Joe was a great coach till 10 years ago and he should have retired then.He hasn't developed a quality QB recently and his style of coaching is not attracting the younger QB's. In recent years he lost players from Pa that were locks to sign for PA STATE. When the style of coaching changes its time. tulsaphil

The WAPO is advertising the first exclusive interview with Joe by Sally Jenkins on Saturday. I guess the PA beat guys weren't big enough or got off the train too soon. Either that, or her reputation as the world's number one apologist for Lance Armstrong made her an obvious choice. banned
Bradley won't be unemployed long. Good luck Tom, you will be missed. Blue and White
It's a disgrace that JoePa and Bradley were treated this way. Penfold18
good luck tom bradley. you are a good man and a great coach. you won't be unemployed for long. wishing you all the best. Ryan
TulsaPhil is right, JoePA should've stepped aside around '04 or so and then he could've named Bradley or someone else a successor. Instead he held on, in my opinion selfishly, and put our backs against the wall. MattPSU
