Still Snow

Mountains of snow remain in parking lots - reminders of this winter's record snowfall.

The lawns and local landscape have reemerged, but even this weekend's 50 degree temperatures haven't melted away all the snow piled up on the fringes of parking lots all over the region.

I photographed the mini-mountain range above at the Deptford Mall in February. The one below was shot on Sunday, at Roosevelt Mall in the Northeast.

Starting with the twenty inches we received on the eve of the winter solstice, this season's record snowfall has meant we've had snow around for the entire winter. Last month when we were between storms, I watched workers in the parking lot of the Garden State Park shopping center haul off some of the snow they'd plowed into piles just a week earlier. It was clear this stuff was going to with us for some time. So, in my travels I began photographing the parking lot snow piles. Click on the photos, or here to see a slide show gallery.

I'll keep at it, because I have no doubt there will be slushy, dirty snowy remnants of the Winter of 2009-10 around here well into April. My prediction of where the last snow pile will be found? I'm banking on the humogous heaps under the elevated PATCO tracks near the Westmont station (it's the last photo in the gallery). It's in the shade and out of the rain. Stay tuned...
