Ed's Exit

As Gov. Rendell's term ends

That's Ed Rendell outside his home on the morning after his election as governor eight years ago.

I'd gone there expecting to get a photo of him waving from the limo as he drove off for his first day as governor-elect.

Instead, he walked down to the end of his driveway to pick up his four daily newspapers. A neighbor walking his dog offered congratulations.

Over the years I've photographed him as the DA, through unsuccessful gubernatioral and mayoral campaigns in the 1980's, and then as America's Mayor in the 90's. He was always good for a photo: Eating Rendelli hoagies at Wawa, dancing with Mummers, diving into swimming pools. He performed even better for reporters.

Just look at this past week. First it was his "nation of wusses" comment on the postponing of the Eagles-Viking game, then signing up with the William Morris talent agency, and then today's lashing out at Lesley Stahl on 60 Minutes: "You're simpletons. You're idiots if you don't get that."

The interview was taped in August, but went viral over the weekend after CBS released a preview. Comedy Central's website turned him green, comparing the governor to the Incredible Hulk.

However, nothing that dramatic went down as I covered his exit interview with the Harrisburg press corps on Thursday.

It was just an hour in a cabinet meeting room, a few dozen reporters and a couple photographers. So how many different ways can you photograph a guy sitting at a table?

Even the Governor started getting fidgety toward the end of his going over his list of accomplishments and taking questions from reporters...

...opening and closing and spinning his cell phone (which looked like a Razr - from his first term - not so surprising a choice for someone who admits he hasn't driven a car since car since 1990).

Rendell said he believes his time in office has been a success. "We have achieved a great deal of the progressive agenda set forth in the 2002 campaign," he said before ticking off his list of accomplishments. Read all about them in the story by Inquirer Harrisburg Bureau writer Amy Worden.
