Bill Iezzi: Lenape vs Eastern Softball

Tuesday, May 18, 2010, 12:14 PM
I was all set to watch Lenape at Eastern Tuesday in the first round of the South Group 4 softball tournament when I learned that the game had been postponed to Wednesday. Bad weather. Lenape, seeded 12th, will be playing the Vikings, seeded 5th, for the third time this season. The Indians will try... Read more

Bill Iezzi: Softball Playoff Wish

Saturday, May 15, 2010, 1:48 PM
While I was checking out the South Group 4 brackets for the forthcoming softball playoffs, I spotted No. 4 seed Williamstown and No. 5 Eastern on the left side. These two big-school teams haven't played each other this season, so I thought that it'd be nice to see them go at it. However, two things... Read more

Bill Iezzi: Happy & Sad Softball Coaches

Friday, May 14, 2010, 9:49 AM
Cherokee coach Nicole Lum was beaming after her softball team beat host Camden Catholic, 3-1, Thursday. Lum liked the efficiency with which her team played, especially since Christine Watson, a captain, pitcher and left fielder was out, sick. Gina Gryniuk took Watson's place in left, junior Carolyn... Bill Iezzi: Metzger in a Hole

Thursday, May 13, 2010, 9:28 AM
Overbrook's Jan Metzger is one of the best softball pitchers in South Jersey. The senior's ERA was 0.13 entering a Colonial Liberty game with Sterling Wednesday. Sterling beat Overbrook and Metzger, 4-2. What happened? It was the hole in front of the pitching rubber, according to Overbrook coach... Read more

Bill Iezzi: Maple Shade Softball Shortcoming

Wednesday, May 12, 2010, 10:36 AM
I saw Maple Shade upend Burlington City, 6-3, Tuesday in a BCL Freedom Division game. Maple Shade is undefeated (10-0) in the division and 11-2 overall and the Wildcats are talking about going for a sectional title. Here's the rub: their defense. Shade committed four errors against a team weakened... Read more

Bill Iezzi: Arena Golf Tournament Afterthought

Tuesday, May 11, 2010, 11:38 AM
Tom Smith's sudden-death victory on the 17th hole to break a three-way tie at 74 to win the Arena/Rifkin golf tournament Thursday was a fittingly exciting ending to a great day of competition. Smith handed Woodstown it's first individual victory in the 29-year history of the tournament and I got to... Read more

B ill Iezzi: Pitman at Arena Goolf Tournament

Friday, May 7, 2010, 11:12 AM
Pitman's Sal Capelli and Louis Wilson were up there in the individual South Jersey golf standings before Thursday's Carl Arena and Al Rifkin Memorial Golf Tournament. Capelli had been averaging 38.25 over nine holes and Wilson 38.38. So I kept an eye on them. Unfortunately for the pair and their... Read more

Bill Iezzi: Carl Arena Golf Tournament Leader

It's a little after noon on Thursday at the Valleybrook Country Club and Woodstown's Tom Smith is leading the pack with an even-par score after 13 holes. Read more

Bill Iezzi: Speedy Softball at Heights

Wednesday, May 5, 2010, 12:23 PM
The Haddon Heights softball team not only played well offensively and defensively in an 8-1 win over Haddon Township Tuesday, but also got into the opposition's heads with base running. Heights stole 10 bases to disrupt Township's defense and undermine its confidence. More of that kind of softball... Read more

Bill Iezzi: Messina Ready for Softball Tournament

Saturday, May 1, 2010, 11:09 AM
I'm looking forward to seeing Camden Catholic's Laura Messina pitch against Kingsway's Dominique Ficara Saturday at 2:30 p.m. in a semifinal of the Hammonton tournament. Messina is on a roll, winning her last seven games, four of which were by shutout. As of Friday the junior had six shutouts and... Read more
