Whippets nab District 1 crown
This was close. Facing 12th-seeded Neshaminy, Downingtown West was heavily favored in last night’s PIAA District 1 Class AAA boys’ soccer championship game. However, the second-seeded Whippets had their hands full at DiSerafino Stadium. Junior midfielder Bobby Sutcliff’s goal in the 88th minute gave Downingtown West a 1-0 overtime win. The victory improved the Whippets, who are ranked second in Southeastern Pennsylvania by The Inquirer, to 22-1. It also extended their winning streak to 13 games. The sixth-ranked Redskins dropped to 14-6-2. Both teams, along with Lower Merion and Central Bucks East, advanced to the PIAA Class AAA state tournament. Downingtown West will face District 12 runner-up George Washington in Tuesday’s 7 p.m. first-round match tentatively scheduled to be played at West Chester East. The same day, Neshaminy will travel to Northeast’s Charles Martin Memorial Stadium to play District 12 champion North Catholic. Sutcliff, who played despite suffering a head injury early in the game, scored arguably the biggest goal of his career. After receiving a pass from teammate Chris Harmon, Sutcliff tapped in the game-winning goal from 6 yards out.
