Smith, Evans nab state titles

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – Souderton’s Kristin Smith and West Chester Henderson’s Shante Evans won gold medals this morning at the PIAA track and field championships at Shippensburg University. Smith won the Class AAA girls’ high jump, while Evans claimed the Class AA girls’ shot put. Smith, a Naval Academy recruit, won her event with a personal-best height of 5 feet, 9 inches. Stroudsburg’s Natasha Morgan was second in 5-7. Upper Dublin’s Taylor Morgan placed third with 5-6. Evans dominated the shot put, recording the six best throws of the competition. Her winning heave of 43-4 was way ahead of the 39-9 ½ effort posted Cheltenham’s Dayna McCrewell, the runner-up. Laurel Highland’s Maressa Guynn (39-0 ¾) was third. -- Keith Pompey
