No surprise here.
Conestoga defeated Springfield (Delco), 9-4, in today’s PIAA boys’ lacrosse state semifinal at Harriton High School. The Pioneers (24-1) will play in Saturday’s 2 p.m. final at HersheyPark Stadium in Hershey. Conestoga will face the winner of tonight’s game between La Salle and Manheim Township.
The win also gave the Pioneers a sweep of this season’s meetings with the Cougars. Conestoga beat Springfield, 12-9, in April. Today's loss ended the Cougars season at 19-6.
Junior attackmen Matt Smith and Jeff Chu stood out in today’s victory.
Smith finished with a game-high three goals and two assists. Chu added two goals and two assists.

Look for some excellent performances at the NJSIAA track and field Meet of Champions tomorrow at South Plainfield's Frank R. Jost stadium.

For example, Seneca's Drew Kanz could reach 7-1 in the high jump again. He did it on May 16 at the Burlington County Open.

That's motivation for Timber Creek's Montez Blair to jump higher. His personal best is 7 feet.

And what about Glassboro's Ryan Chance in the triple jump? The senior won the South Jersey Group 1 event with a distance of 48 feet, 3 1/4 inches, the best in New Jersey sectional history.

Can Chance do it again, or better?

Stay tuned.

The W.C. East players celebrate their PIAA District 1 Class AAAA title win

In beating Council Rock North by a 6-2 score last week, West Chester East won its second district baseball championship in six seasons. The Vikings also gained revenge for a 6-5 loss to the Indians in 2003. East, though, softened the sting of that year's title-game loss by going on and winning the PIAA state championship.

Since 1983, W.C. East has won three district championships (in 1991, the Vikes knocked of Neshaminy, 12-1).

In 2006, the baseball playoffs switched from three classifications (A, AA, AAA) to four (A, AA, AAA, AAAA).

Below is a list of the results of the championship games at the highest enrollment classification since 1983.

Enjoy the state playoffs games...the Road to Altoona!

The time for Tuesday's South Jersey Non-Public B championship baseball game between St. Rose and Bishop Eustace has been changed to 2 p.m.

Originally it was scheduled for 3:45 p.m. but Eustace is graduating and asked that the game be moved up.

Tuesday's South Jersey Non-Public B softball championshp between St. Joseph and Sacred Heart has been moved to 4 p.m. at Buena.

The game was originally scheduled for Wall Twp. High, but Buena is a much better proximity for both schools.

Sorry La Salle boys’ lacrosse fan.
Your Explorers are great, but not great enough to knock the Conestoga boys’ lacrosse team from the top spot in Pompey’s Super Seven. If both teams advance to Saturday’s PIAA state final, La Salle will get the opportunity to move up.
But for now, Conestoga remains No.1, while La Salle is still second in my list of the top seven spring teams in Southeastern Pennsylvania, regardless of sport.

Here’s a glimpse of the rankings that will appear in tomorrow’s Inky.
1. Conestoga boys' lacrosse. The high-scoring Pioneers have scored 10 or more goals in 17 of their 24 games of the season.
2. La Salle boys' lacrosse. Assuming both teams win Tuesday’s PIAA state semifinals, the Explorers will get an opportunity to avenge their season-opening loss to Conestoga.
3. Penn Charter baseball. What was I thinking? I originally thought Malvern Prep was the best baseball team in the Inter-Ac. Penn Charter proved me wrong by sweeping Malvern Prep.
4. Abington girls’ track and field. Talk about dominance. The Ghosts still managed to win the Class AAA girls’ state title even though they had a few mishaps at the PIAA state meet.
5. Radnor girls’ lacrosse. The Red Raiders have erased memories of their setback in the District 1 tourney final.
6. Spring-Ford softball. Since losing 7-6 to Owen J. Roberts on May 6, the Rams defeated their next six opponents by a combined, 24-3, score.
7.. Pennsbury boys’ volleyball. The Falcons were ranked fifth in the final Pennsylvania Volleyball Coaches Association’s Class AAA top-10 poll.
Under consideration:, Central Bucks South softball, Malvern Prep baseball, Harriton boys' tennis, St. Joseph's Prep lacrosse, Swenson girls’ track and field.

Now, this is what I call a celebratory day.
The 17 seniors on La Salle’s lacrosse team graduated from high school this morning. After the ceremony, those players and their other teammates faced Downingtown East in the biggest game of the season. A couple of hours later, the Explorers aren't just rejoicing over a graduation.
La Salle defeated the Cougars, 10-8, in a PIAA quarterfinal at Harriton High School.
Senior attackman Pete Schwartz and sophomore attackman Kevin Forster scored three goals apiece in the victory.
The victory sent La Salle (19-4) into Tuesday’s semifinal at a neutral site. The District 12 champion will face the winner of tonight’s game between District 3 top-seed Manheim Township and District 7 No. 1 seed Mount Lebanon.
Read tomorrow’s Inky for more information on today’s game.

Williamstown softball coach Fred Powell said he has one of the best-hitting teams he's had in 18 years.

The Braves proved it today in the South Jersey Group 4 championship game. They were down 2-0, 3-2 and 5-3 when Katie Trotter slammed a 2-out, three-run homer to win the game and the crown, 6-5.
