Cherokee's Monica Roeder, an Inquirer third-team all-South Jersey basketball selection, has made a verbal commitment to attend Manhattan, according to Chiefs coach Shannon Bretz. According to Bretz, Roeder has received a full scholarship.

The 5-foot-10 Roeder, considered one of the top shooters in South Jersey, averaged 13.7 points last season as a junior.

According to NCAA rules, a rising senior can't sign a basketball letter of intent until November 11.

The Carpenter Cup softball tournament was supposed to end on June 25. However, excessive rain and a sponge-like field at FDR Park pushed the final to June 30.

Which interfered with the plans of at least one head coach, who had to leave for a scheduled vacation and pass the reins to an assistant.

That assistant, Ryan Pickett, led Delaware South to the championship.

The play was fairly crisp for an all-star game but more importantly the stands were once again packed for the Adam Taliaferro Football Classic at Rowan University.

Proceeds from this game that consisted of many of South Jersey's top senior, went toward the Adam Taliaferro Foundation.

This foundation began in 2001 and has helped others with spinal injuries. Since forming, the foundation has raised more than $300,000.

That total, of course doesn't include what this year's game raised. The football game is the foundation's biggest fund raiser.

The White team beat the Blue 30-18. as Haddon Heights defensive back Chris Roundtree scored on an 11-yard fumble and also prevented a touchdown late in the first half with an end zone deflection. Roundtree is a Ursinus recruit.

This has become an annual tradition in South Jersey, one that showcases athletic talent and a great spirit of giving by the many volunteers.

Anybody interested in making a donation to the foundation, can send checks to:

Some of South Jersey's top seniors will be playing their final game in tonight's Adam Taliaferro All-Star Football Classic at Rowan University.

Proceeds go toward the Adam Taliaferro Fun, which goes toward helping others with spinal injuries. Since forming in 2001, the foundation has raised more than $300,000.

Game time is 7 p.m. and in addition to seeing great football, it's always inspiring to catch up with Taliaferro, now a lawyer, who has been a driving force in helping raise funds and awareness for spinal injuries.

One player we think could be a true standout tonight is Glassboro WR-DE Ricky Tunstall, a University of Delaware recruit who is also a major threat as a return man.

Tunstall is competing on the White Roster, which includes players from Camden, Gloucester and Salem County.

The Blue Roster consists of players from Atlantic, Burlington, Cape May and Cumberland counties.

Atlantic City WR Leavander Jones, who is headed to James Madison, is among the many big-play performers for the Blue team.

The grass at sprawling FDR Park, Broad and Pattison Aves., was super soggy Monday afternoon when I stopped by fields 5 and 6 to catch a little Carpenter Cup softball action with a friend.

But no one was there. Puddles of water near the pitchers' circle told the story. The fields had absorbed so much rain that the opening games had to be pushed back.

An elderly golfer we encountered at the site's 18-hole course said the entire park is below sea level.
