When did Vick break ribs?

POSTED: Wednesday, November 16, 2011, 2:40 PM

When did Michael Vick break his ribs?

Does it even matter?

If you want to know if Vick’s well-below average outing Sunday against the Cardinals was because he broke two ribs on the second play of the game or because he was simply bad then it does matter. Vick did not tell the Eagles about the injury until Monday morning.

Eagles coach Andy Reid said Monday and reiterated again on Wednesday that Vick broke his ribs when Arizona linebacker Daryl Washington hit the quarterback on his left side just after he threw a pass on the Eagles’ second play from scrimmage. Vick did not leave the game and played every offensive snap for the next three quarters.

However, in the fourth quarter as he scrambled Vick was hit on the lower left region of his back --  the direct spot he located the broken ribs to reporters on Monday -- by linebacker Paris Lenon. Vick did not get up for some time, but eventually walked off on his own. He missed the next play – Vince Young took over – but Vick returned for the Eagles’ next series and finished the game.

During a spot on 94.1-WIP the other day and again on Wednesday at the NovaCare Complex, Eagles running back LeSean McCoy said that he thought the injury occurred on the fourth quarter play. After he was told that Reid said it happened on the second play, McCoy deferred to this head coach.

Reid, on Wednesday, was asked about the discrepancy and how he knew Vick broke his ribs on the second play.

“Mike told us after the game,” Reid said.

How would Vick know if he broke his ribs then?

“He doesn’t have x-ray vision,” Reid said. “He was sore, I guess. I’m not sure anybody knew. He didn’t tell anybody, so he just played.”

Reid was then asked about the fourth quarter hit and whether that could have been the blow that broke Vick’s ribs.

“When I walked out, he was down, he told me that he had the wind knocked out of him,” Reid said. “That’s what he said. He didn’t say anything about ribs or anything else, he said he had the wind knocked out of him. When he was out there he sounded like he had the wind knocked out of him.”

But it still could have broken his ribs, right?

“Whatever you want to write, you write,” Reid said. “I told you the second play of game, what more do you want him to do? This isn’t the game of ‘Clue,’ you know, I’m telling you the second play of the game.”

Vick had his worst game as an Eagle. He completed just 16 of 34 passes for 128 yards and did not throw a touchdown. He did toss two interceptions and finished with a 32.5 passer rating.

Vick did not practice Wednesday and his availability for Sunday’s game against the New York Giants is up in the air. The 3-6 Eagles obviously need a victory. Vince Young will likely be his replacement if he can’t go.

“If Michael has an opportunity to play then Michael will play, and then we go from there,” Reid said.

Reid said that third stringer Mike Kafka would take some reps during Wednesday’s practice.

At this point does it really matter when they were broke, does it really matter if they are actually broken or not? I feel Andy has lost his players. When the starting RB gets on the radio talking about how and when the starting QB got injured isn't a sign that these guys are a team.

This whole article just shows how stupid sports reporters are. What difference does it make "when?" with no X-rays there's no way to know. Reid's not "lying" because it's impossible to know; even Vick can only guess.

Who will be the Eagles' starting QB? Whoever he is, he'll be a loser. Again.

@Frank. You're typical of the fan base. Long on bluster, not to swift on the uptake. Again. Vick told Reid when it happened, Reid repeated it. So, what you're saying is that Vick lied. Do you really think an individual needs an x-ray to know something happened? Did Ryan Howard need an x-ray or MRI to know he tore his Achilles? Ever hear an athlete say he heard or felt something pop or snap? With you? It's all spewing, 100% of the time, as long as it's negative. No common sense, no reason. Dopey? You're talking about yourself.

The second question after "when did he brake his ribs" should have been "hey moron, when will you EVER learn that throwing the ball 95% of the time BEFORE setting it up with the run WILL NEVER WORK?" then followed by "would you like to take back that timeout against the Bills when you FROZE YOUR OWN PUNT RETURNER?" and, of course, "Hey Andy, did you know that LeSean McCoy is one of the most DANGEROUS RUNNING BACKS IN THE NFL AND THAT HE SHOULD PROBABLY SEE THE BALL MORE OFTEN??!!!" I don't care what any apologist, or logistics major or anyone else says, if any of us in our daily work made decisions like Andy Reid does that affects our work place like his does, we'd be FIRED IMMEDIATELY!!!!!!!!

I think this may be nonsense too. Didn't FOX show get up from the bench right after the half and go through some throwing motions as if he was hurt? I defer to you guys, cause I'm not sure about the exact timing. But it wasn't after the play off. It was early, and I think it was the start of the second half. Plus, his play was so bad all game, it had to happen early. This from a diehard cowboys fan.

Philly overall has a very racist element hidden or not. And alot of these comments back that claim up. Best example is putting a stature of a white guy fictionous character up on the art museum over their black proven Rocky in Joe Frazier. But its ok.. I know Vick is the reason why the Eagles arent winning. Its not because the eagles have alienated its most impactful player in contract negotiations. Its not because the defensive coordinator is a o line coach who has the best fleet of man corners in the league playing zone. Its not because the EAgles failed to take the first 5 games of the season seriously and thought they could overcome their own dumb personell problems later on. And its not because Reid refuses to run the ball when he has the best running back in the game right now. Its because of Karma.. *cough*

Nice to see that the "journalists" have become bold enough to ask the questions they should have been asking for 12 years. Andy dropped the Clue reference on them, maybe Col. Mustard can devise a game plan good enough to beat the Giants, because I'm not holding out much hope for Andy getting that done.

Vick is a liar. He had a terrible game so he claims his ribs were broken on the 2nd play rather than towards the end of the game. No character loser who is now the face of your franchise. Enjoy him Kool Aid drinkers. All in Dream Team!

Mclane has some job to keep, so he has to write something other than a grocery list. You other people weighing in are pathetic. WHAT DOES THIS MATTER!
