Source: Westbrook's surgery is a serious procedure

POSTED: Thursday, June 4, 2009, 2:10 PM

The surgery Brian Westbrook will undergo tomorrow morning in Baltimore is a serious procedure, according to a source close to the situation.

"I'm just concerned that it is being underplayed," the source said. "It's a lot more than a little spur and it's much more than the knee arthroscopy he had (in February)."

Both a team source and Westbrook's agent Todd France downplayed the significance of the surgery, which the team announced late Wednesday night.

"It's just some bone spurs," France told ESPN.com Wednesday.

The agent also described the surgery as "minor" and a team source said it wasn't "a major procedure."

Exactly how serious Westbrook's surgery will be won't be known until after Dr. Mark Myerson completes the procedure. Only Myerson can give a clear timetable of how long it will take Westbrook to recover and he won't be able to do that until after he has seen the extent of the damage in the running back's right ankle.

The Eagles continued their camp this morning with Lorenzo Booker getting the majority of snaps with the first-team offense. The third-year running back talked about Westbrook afterward.

"Brian played with those injuries all last year and now he's getting a chance to clean it up," Booker said. "That's one of the tougher guys I've ever been around, so I don't see him missing any significant time. He's going to miss the things that he can afford to miss, which is the preseason and OTAs. What can he possibly learn or prove in the preseason?"

Westbrook wasnt that great last year anyway, he had a few great games. He is pretty much done. Weaver short yardage, McCoy will do just fine and whoever else after that.

Westbrook is good but he's always been fragile. He's past 30, the downhill part of a running back's career.

McCoy will be starting very very early in the season. It hurts that he won't have Westbrook to learn from. But no way does Booker beat him out. Give the kid a little time - this is the first full-team activity that he's had since drafted. It is the passing game that will take him time to learn. I just love how the "source close to the situation" is more believable than the ones who attach their names to their statements. Who is closer to the source than Reid and the agent? Is the team trainer now the NFL version of "Deep Throat"?

Reid and Banner have wasted the "Westbrook" years by not pairing him with other quality offensive weapons. The only year they did, they went to the Superbowl.

Buckhalter is NOT fragile? Correll Buckhalter's picture appears in Webster's Collegiate Dictionary adjacent to the entry for "frag-ile: adjective; fr Latin -- easily breakable. See more at perishable. Antonyms - see durable." !! :)

MCaesar, Westbrook hasn't started 16 gms ever in his career so your post is old news. Flava, you answered your own question, bone spurs take time to develop so perhaps they hadn't developed by Feb yet. DUH. True, did you expect McCoy to be "comfortable" after one 3 day mini-camp and a weeklong rookie camp? Common sense please. And last but not least, 16, stick to hockey.........AMG OUT.

Well i hope he is fine enough to play - if he is not he need's to rest there is no way around it to be truthfull about it he need's to heal and not having enough time to heal will effect his playing of the game so i wish him good luck in healing prosses and hope he is able to get out there and play - mibrze is right even though this cover's the entire team not just 1 player or 2 there is the entire team to think about on that 1

Caesar and flyer. Are you guys serious? Sure let's replace our guy with another 30+ guy that has had both knees replaced..and yeah buckhalter over Westbrook is the way to go! You guys are all over reacting. He has over 3 months til the games matter and to suggest he is washed up is ridiculous. Will he ever have another 06 or 07? Probably not but the number of fools who suggest dumping him is alarming. I'm glad none of you get paychecks from j. Lurie. Having said that it would be nice to bring in an experienced back to help or assist, nor replace. Go birds!

What the team really need's are about 6 pappali's that are 21 and can playe each of the main possision's 1 QB - 2 running back's and the other 3 slot's that are worth thinking about and there willing to allow them selve's to get hurt just to get to the super bowl and win it for once - we have the worst recered for getting there and earning the win

Kudos to Westbrook for managing to trick the Eagles into giving him that 3 year extension deal 2 years ago. One of the few who managed to do it to this regime. Edgerrin James might be an option. Looks like McCoy might have to step up right away.... then again they only run the ball 35% of the time.

Westbrook is a nice enough guy and smart - BUT every surgery need's recovery time regardless of who you are. - Westbrook will recover But how do we know that he will recover in time? and if he cant who should should replace him? there are other player's who can play too and keeping westbrook on the feild will hurt him and the team more in the long run

Give the guy break for god's sake. Yes, he's 30 and he's nicked up. But please don't go burying the guy until he gets out on the field and shows that he can't do it anymore. Hopefully, this surgery will go well and Bwest will be ready when he needs to be ...GAME 1

Who cares if he misses training camp. He is know to not practice that much and miss preseason/training camp since he was at Nova and that never affected his preformance in season. All he needs is to be in shape and ready for season. He is a veteran and the best in the league.

All of you geniuses who are burying Brian Westbrook should hang your heads in shame after all he has meant to this franchise for so many years. He has been - and continues to be - the single best offensive weapon on the team, and that includes McNabb. It was two short seasons ago that he led the entire NFL in total yards and now you want to write him off? Frigging ingrates! Westbrook blew out a knee at Villanova and his remaining college career was said to be in jeopardy, while his pro prospects were proclaimed to be virtually dead. How'd that turn out? Good luck with the surgery, B-West. This team desperately needs you, even if some dopes don't realize it.

all i am saying is give the knee a rest for the time beng then get back the horse and enjoy it - being doped up while playeing the game is not right regardless of the reaseon or excuse - and resting help's not hurt's his game - just put's it on hold for a few week's and a late start in the seaseon for him will not i repeat will not hurt the player's and if he is pain tring to play without the drug's then that would hurt the team and him - westbrook if you see this please take a little time recoupe and recover then get out there and have funn at your highest and best condition you will be at

vince papale - age at the time 30 was the wide receiver and special team's during 76-78 - played 41 out of 44 game's - pulled 2 fumbled recuvery's - and 1 15 yard reception retired in 79 due to sholder injury and we should have kept him for other reason's not as a football player but as a coach for player's like westbrook

Better assume Westbrook is done and prepare for it that way. Then take whatever he can do as a bonus. He at least needs to be around and teach new RBs how to pass block. That may be his biggest contribution that can't be easily replaced and is pretty important to a 70-30 ratio pass happy lame ineffective, I mean west coast, offense.
  • 0 like this / 0 don't   •   Posted 5:06 PM, 06/04/2009
Does this shock anyone? RBs rarely have a slowly declining exit. Rather, one season they are great, then they cut after the following season. The list of great RBs who fell fast and hard are too numerous to mention. If it isn't this year for BWest, then probably next.

this is why i made a statement why vince papale should have stayed so that he can teach player's to teach other's so that if they happen to get hurt like westbrook he would be able to do that more effectively - westbrook put up a great fight no matter what and he still has a lot to offer

the westbrook signing and his subsequent lack of productivity will change Eagles contracts permanently. Banner and the Eagles were beginning to show some desire to more flexible in contracts with older players, and they bucked up beyond belief for Westy. They have got little for their money and that is not lost on Banner at all. His contracts will become even more Draconian and it will be a cold day in hell before another 3o yr old gets a new deal from the club. All thanks to Westy.

here are a few good question's for everyone thgink about how badly we as fan's need a super bowl win - Q- whene was the last time the city has seen a super bowl win from the eagle's? and how many super bowl's did we go to now? it is time to evaluate how the team is playing AS well as the player's well being for this year's super bowl chance to win that 1

W-Brook should never have been used as an every down back (total waste of talent, not his strength and will likely shorten his carrer). He should be used in situations, screen passes and deifnitely in the slot going further.

the (many) folks on this page who oddly think Westbrook's absence will be inconsequential are either discounting this story (which makes a little sense since its from an undisclosed source) or are discounting the team mvp's statistical and intangible value to this offense over the last many years of contention. Look at the Tackles that they got rid of. Not to mention the probowl guard who had his own issues. If nobody was blocking... nobody is running.

It just figures that West would get his monster deal, and then spend more time in the trainers room than on the field. If he is not ready to start the season or even participate in camp, bring in someone like Edge, McCallister, Rudi Johnson....SOMEONE. There is young talent behind McCoy with Mendenhall (my TC sleeper) but who know's what he will bring to the table in camp.

We might just want to cut Eckel now and sign another decent back, Westbrook will play but it's in the best interest of the Eagles to only have him carry 10 times a game and have him split out some and give the rest of the rushes to Weaver and McCoy/Booker. He has only a year or two left in a limited role so we better get the most out of him and have him around to help McCoy (and even Booker) improve since they are both similar backs.
