Source: Westbrook's surgery is a serious procedure

POSTED: Thursday, June 4, 2009, 2:10 PM

The surgery Brian Westbrook will undergo tomorrow morning in Baltimore is a serious procedure, according to a source close to the situation.

"I'm just concerned that it is being underplayed," the source said. "It's a lot more than a little spur and it's much more than the knee arthroscopy he had (in February)."

Both a team source and Westbrook's agent Todd France downplayed the significance of the surgery, which the team announced late Wednesday night.

"It's just some bone spurs," France told ESPN.com Wednesday.

The agent also described the surgery as "minor" and a team source said it wasn't "a major procedure."

Exactly how serious Westbrook's surgery will be won't be known until after Dr. Mark Myerson completes the procedure. Only Myerson can give a clear timetable of how long it will take Westbrook to recover and he won't be able to do that until after he has seen the extent of the damage in the running back's right ankle.

The Eagles continued their camp this morning with Lorenzo Booker getting the majority of snaps with the first-team offense. The third-year running back talked about Westbrook afterward.

"Brian played with those injuries all last year and now he's getting a chance to clean it up," Booker said. "That's one of the tougher guys I've ever been around, so I don't see him missing any significant time. He's going to miss the things that he can afford to miss, which is the preseason and OTAs. What can he possibly learn or prove in the preseason?"

vince papale - age at the time 30 was the wide receiver and special team's during 76-78 - played 41 out of 44 game's - pulled 2 fumbled recuvery's - and 1 15 yard reception retired in 79 due to sholder injury and we should have kept him for other reason's not as a football player but as a coach for player's like westbrook

Better assume Westbrook is done and prepare for it that way. Then take whatever he can do as a bonus. He at least needs to be around and teach new RBs how to pass block. That may be his biggest contribution that can't be easily replaced and is pretty important to a 70-30 ratio pass happy lame ineffective, I mean west coast, offense.

Does this shock anyone? RBs rarely have a slowly declining exit. Rather, one season they are great, then they cut after the following season. The list of great RBs who fell fast and hard are too numerous to mention. If it isn't this year for BWest, then probably next.

this is why i made a statement why vince papale should have stayed so that he can teach player's to teach other's so that if they happen to get hurt like westbrook he would be able to do that more effectively - westbrook put up a great fight no matter what and he still has a lot to offer

He'll start twelve games and be effective. like always. but this might be the last year he can do that.

the westbrook signing and his subsequent lack of productivity will change Eagles contracts permanently. Banner and the Eagles were beginning to show some desire to more flexible in contracts with older players, and they bucked up beyond belief for Westy. They have got little for their money and that is not lost on Banner at all. His contracts will become even more Draconian and it will be a cold day in hell before another 3o yr old gets a new deal from the club. All thanks to Westy.

here are a few good question's for everyone thgink about how badly we as fan's need a super bowl win - Q- whene was the last time the city has seen a super bowl win from the eagle's? and how many super bowl's did we go to now? it is time to evaluate how the team is playing AS well as the player's well being for this year's super bowl chance to win that 1

Great. Now it's Dr. Booker offering his insipid opinion.

There was a video clip of Westbrook playing golf yesterday. He looked overweight and out of shape. I loved his game from Nova on, but it makes you wonder if he's done.

W-Brook should never have been used as an every down back (total waste of talent, not his strength and will likely shorten his carrer). He should be used in situations, screen passes and deifnitely in the slot going further.
