BRAYLON EDWARDS, ANYONE?

POSTED: Monday, March 23, 2009, 12:18 PM

During an interview on the Eagles' web site last week, coach Andy Reid said he liked his wide receivers, which no doubt drew a collective groan from a lot of fans.

Here's the thing to always remember about Reid: It's always about what he does and never about what he says.

This isn't the first time Reid has said he is happy with his receivers and it won't be the last. That doesn't mean the Eagles aren't going to make a play for another receiver this offseason and Reid has a point. The combination of DeSean Jackson, Kevin Curtis, Hank Baskett and Jason Avant isn't bad at all.

Reid's mantra, however, has always been that if he feels the Eagles can get better at a particular position, then they will at least try to do that.

The Eagles obviously didn't think T.J. Houshmanzadeh or any of the other free agent receivers represented enough of an upgrade to pursue.

Two receivers who could eventually be available on the trade market would represent significant upgrades. The one everybody is talking about is Anquan Boldin from the Arizona Cardinals. The other guy is Cleveland's Braylon Edwards. Mike Garafolo from the Newark Star Ledger and Ken Palmer of Scout.com have both reported that the New York Giants have made trade proposals for Edwards.

If I'm the Eagles, I'd get in on the Edwards action because he has the size and ability to be a difference maker. Yes, he led the league in drops last season, but that was with an awful Cleveland team. Put him on a contending Eagles team and he could have a T.O.-type year. We're talking about 2004 T.O., not the 2005 model.

Everybody who is negative about Edwards: One question: Is he better than anything on the Gold Standard's roster right now? I believe he is.

People who rely on stats will focus on Edwards' drops. People who routinely take the time to watch football games that don't involve the Eagles (I know, an alien concept) will realize that Braylon Edwards is a ridiculous talent that had a spectacular season in 07 and was plagued by lapses of concentration in 08. I'd happily welcome the challenge of fixing his drops issue with a potential reward being one of the league's best receivers. Everyone else, please return to your singular focus.

McNabb throws harder than anyone, so I don't see how this guy who couldn't catch balls in Cleveland could suddenly adjust to a stronger quarterback.

If the QB has to get it out of his hands too fast and it touches Edwards it's considered a drop. That is how it matters.

I think the Giants are not in the running. If this guy is so good why have the Browns tried to trade him the last 2 seasons?http://blogs.nypost.com/sports/giants/archives/2009/03/report_giants_p.html

PASS??? Hell yeah lets have DMAC PASS the ball to B.E.!!! and PASS the blunt! Two years ago he was unstoppable. Imagine a GOOD QB like DMAC Throwing to B.E.! Who was CLE QB last year? This city, and all the naysayers here would fall in love with him just like we did with T.O. LETS GO ANDY!

makes no sense...what does the team around him have to do with him droping the ball?! If the ball got to him, he's the problem...not the QB, RB, other WRs, OLine...its the guy who cant bring in the ball is the problem. Boldin dont drop the ball. He may not be fast but at least he catches what comes to him.

WR is not the top priority here. RB is. We need a good back to compliment B West and lighten his workload. Plus a TE who can block effectively would be huge too. I can't belive I'm typiing this but WR is not the biggest need.

To everyone saying "a drop is a drop" and "it doesn't matter if his team was bad," I invite you to take a look at Randy Moss with the Oakland Raiders versus Randy Moss with the Vikings and Randy Moss with the Patriots. With good teams, Moss is extraordinary. With bad teams, Moss loses focus and doesn't care. Am I saying Braylon Edwards is as good as Randy Moss? Of course not, but isn't it even the slightest bit possible that their mindsets could be the same? Don't you think a guy will care more about his job if he's on a good team?

If a you equate the reason for dropping passes to a player being on an awful team, then we have been one of the worst teams in the history of the NFL. See: Pinkston, Thrash, Mitchell, Na Brown, Small, etc. etc. etc...
