Vick: reaction to McNabb should be positive

POSTED: Tuesday, September 28, 2010, 2:18 PM

Michael Vick got a raucous ovation at Imhotep Charter School as he spoke to the students about the dangers of, as he put it, losing focus on his life long goals and the legacy he hopes to leave for himself. Afterward, he said he hopes Donovan McNabb gets a "positive" reaction from fans Sunday.

Vick was speaking at the West Oak Lane school as part of his agreement with the Humane Society of the United States to take part in presentations meant to discourage dog fighting. Standing in front of an "End Dogfighting" banner, he urged the high school students to stay focused on their goals and not stray into destructive behavior. A recap of the event is here.

After speaking, Vick talked to reporters mostly about his work with the Humane Society, but was also asked about how fans might react to McNabb.

"Don gave a lot to the city of Philadelphia, he dedicated himself, not only on the field, but out in the community. It was known and I think everybody is conscious of that and I think it should be a positive reaction. It will be a positive reaction," Vick said.

The game might be a highlight of the schedule for fans, but Vick said he is treating it like any other.

"For me it's just another game, and I’m pretty sure Donovan feels the same way," he said. "We both know what’s at stake, and ultimately at the end of the day you want to win a game. The hype of me playing against him is not going to change anything. It's not going to help us out there on the field."

buddylove, a lot of these bashers do have short term memories. How about Rodney Peete, Jim McMahon, the Detmer brothers, Ken O'Brien, Jeff Kemp, and Brad Goebel? All of these guys started some games from the tail end of the Randall era to McNabb. And I'm not even counting Doug Peterson, who kept it warm until McNabb learned the playbook. I'm as disappointed as anyone that they didn't win a Super Bowl with McNabb and didn't like his apparent lack of accountability, well illustrated by TruePhillyFan. But I do appreciate the good times, perhaps because I remember the 90s. All in all, I was fine with Reid's decision to turn the page, but it amazes me how some people talk about McNabb as if he lost 10 games a season for a decade, burned the city to the ground, and stole everyone's girlfriend on the way out.

If any of you boo McNabb you are pathetic and have no idea what McNabb has meant to Philadelphia football. Those who remember the days of Kemp, Hoying, Detmer, Peete and Bubby Brister, know what I am talking about. I hope 5 has a good game but the Eagles win.

Thankfully I believe most of the boo birds on here are jobless bums that cant afford to go to the game itself, so maybe just maybe, McNabb will get cheered like HE SHOULD BE. Booing T.O. was one thing. To say McNabb and T.O. are on the same level in Philly is another. I hope our fans do the right thing.

Please: "McNabb will be booed because he is a despicable man" You sir, are truly an idiot. ronstone nailed it dead on - a no-class, unintelligent fan.

Ronstone said it all; nothing more needs to be said on this subject.

what about all he did for the city outside of football? oh ya, you forgot or never heard about all those great things and Im sure there were many. Ronstone nailed it, just sit on your hands. If you dont have anything nice to say.....say it on a blog. Even the Randall days were rough, these youngsters dont know how good they had it with McNabb.

McNabb deserves to be cheered before the game starts, then all bets are off. He's the other teams QB. But the national media will be lying in wait just itching for another reason to show Philly in a negative light, let's not give that to them.

Nobody OWES McNabb anything, but the guy delivered alot of W's while he was at the helm. Did he have head scratching moments? Yes. Did he win a superbowl? No. But the guy did give us 8-10 great years of football as an upper eschelon quarterback. He wasn't my favorite personality, but the guy did alot of good for the Eagles.

As a long-time Eagle fan, i will cheer McNabb, then the competition is on! Im not gonna disrespect him, he brought a lot of wins and excitement to Philly eagles, something we haven't seen in a long time. And before you all who say you are going to boo him do that, you need to think about something: we dominated the NFC in six years of McNabbs career, and one superbowl. No we didn't win, but ask the fans in st louis, cinnci, cleveland, detroit, when will they at least see a championship game, CONSECUTIVE CHAMPIONSHIP GAMES, consecutive division titles? Don't be A!@#$holes. Give him his respect and just move on. PHilly has winning teams, some cities have absolutely nothing.

Ditto ronstone, ditto. It was all management anyway the reason he is not here. I still like Donovan and will cheer him not his team anywhere. I will of course cheer my Eagles. I was still a fan of Randall Cunningham when he went to Minnesota. Plan on buying his jersey soon. Use your strength to cheer your team, and just jeer the other team as always no matter who the other team happens to be.

I've gotta tell you, I couldn't agree more with ronstone. I'm sick of the Philly fan. I will always love my hometown teams and respect the talents and flaws of all pro athletes...it's entertainment people.

    "TruePhillyFan
I'll be at the game, and i'll be boo-ing. Not because of his inability to bring a superbowl home, but for his arrogance and disrespect to his teammates, and by extension the fans, during every press conference in the past 5 years. I have nothing but respect for guys like Iverson, Thome, and the like. They didn't win anything but they were classy (mostly) in their interviews. McNabb never once took the blame for a loss himself, but rather always found a scapegoat in the defense, the offensive line, etc." What??? He always said "i have to get better" or "we have to get better' after a loss. I'm not sure how that is pointing the finger at someone else. Booing is a really strange reaction to a good QB and good person.

ZZZZZZ. Sunday can't come soon enough.Philly is full of Boo Bird morons. Enough already. Macnabb didn't deserve Philly and Philly certainly didn't deserve MacNabb. He's just one player on a 53 man squad.
