Vick on his sliding: "It won't happen"
Jeff McLane, Inquirer Staff Writer
When Michael Vick took off for one of his dazzling runs against the Colts on Sunday, you could almost hear the entire stadium, the Eagles sideline and the team's ownership box all scream in unison, "Slide!"
But he just won't do it.
"I don’t know how to do it." the Eagles quarterback said. "I don’t know how to slide, so I won’t get into that right now. I either get down, I go head first or dive or just fall. For some reason I always think I’m going to get hurt or something crazy’s going to happen.”
Some have suggested Vick take lessons with a baseball coach who could teach him the finer art of sliding feet first. Actually, when he was in Atlanta, Vick said, the Falcons sent him to the Braves for instruction.
“It won’t happen," Vick said. "I did it before down in Atlanta. It didn’t work.”
Andy Reid joked after the win over the Colts about the one time Vick stepped out of bounds before getting hit, but the Eagles coach seems to have come to terms with Vick's not sliding.
“Listen, I let Michael play," Reid said. "I mean, he knows. Listen, he’s the one that had the cracked cartilage, there. And so that’s not a real fun experience. So he knows when he needs to get out [of bounds]. And I was joking when I made that statement. But listen, he got out of bounds a couple times, which is good.”
Vick spoke briefly with reporters before heading to a meeting as he and the Eagles prepare for Monday night's rematch against the Redskins.
The Eagles are expected to be without starting free safety Nate Allen (neck) and starting right guard Max Jean-Gilles (concussion). Neither will practice Thursday, Reid said. Jean-Gilles has not passed his post-concussion tests and has not been examined by an independent neurologist, Reid added.
Rookie Kurt Coleman will fill in for Allen and Nick Cole will take Jean-Gilles' place.
Cornerback Ellis Hobbs (hip) and tackle King Dunlap (knee) were going to be eased back into practice. Reid said that it would be a "stretch" for Hobbs to make it back by Monday. Dimitri Patterson filled in for Hobbs against the Colts and played well.
I don't condone what Vick did with the dogs and I find it pretty disgusting, but far too many people overlook the fact that there are numerous athletes that we (fans everywhere, not just Philly) cheer on that have committed crimes against other human beings, yet for some reason everyone gets up in arms about him harming dogs. Kobe and Big Ben more or less raped women, numerous other guys have beaten people, not dogs, and yet everyone's fixated on dog abuse. Like I said, I don't condone his actions and I like dogs, but he's paid his price (which I feel was way too high) and at the end of the day, they were animals, not humans. donde- The_Unknown-Poster -- eagles fans couldnt care less who dislikes vick. stay off the messege boards if you are one of those people. it seems like because others forgave him, you idiots cant let us have our fun which in turn just makes you look pathetic because you cant let it go and/or make silly comments on eagles boards just to get a reaction. get a freakin life and go somewhere. you are more consumed with vick then eagles' fans. lol. must suck.
- Just so he doesn't do that stupid head first slide that MLB players love so much.
Is he faster than DeSean? probably not but he looks it cause he's zooming past those defensive linemen and LB's like a Lambo passing a line of Escalades. he's the real zoom zoom. Eephus
#7 is our QB and he wears Green. Support him or move on to another team. adipaolo- seriously this is for everyone here with a brain, do NOT respond AT ALL to the idiots with the Cliff Lee remarks and Vicks past and they will shut up. They do it for attention. Just responding and they will stop commenting.
doggone it, leave Vick alone. P Even- silrock27 -- you're absolutely right.
the real saddness here is the posting by the haters.....a definite indication of a serious insecurity, lack of intelligence and a life with no focus.......sad......they truly deserve pity..... nuggett- Baltimore's Donté Stallworth drove drunk, killed a man, spent 24 days in jail and a year suspended from the NFL. The Bengals' Adam Jones has a rap sheet as long as your arm and what you won't find on it is the shooting he was involved in outside a Las Vegas strip club in which a man was left paralyzed for life. Ravens LB Ray Lewis, who after being charged with the brutal murders of two men in Atlanta several hours after the Rams beat the Titans in Super Bowl, pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of obstruction of justice. The murders remain unsolved to this day, and Lewis is one of the most heavily marketed personalities in the NFL. In fact, it is worth noting that the 19 months Vick served in a federal prison is a dramatically greater punishment for the maiming of dogs than Stallworth, Jones or Lewis ever paid for their alleged involvement in the maiming of humans. One of the bedrocks of our humanity is that we give people second chances, and Vick is entitled to his. Flyboy24
