Vick: Will take Eagles' loyalty into consideration
Jeff McLane, Inquirer Staff Writer
Michael Vick knows that he's put himself in a much better position in terms of his long-term future with his play this season, but the Eagles quarterback said that he isn't concerned right now about a new contract or where he's going to play next season.
But when it comes time to make a decision -- if he ever becomes a free agent -- Vick said that the Eagles, who signed him in Aug. 2009 not long after he was released from prison, could get the first crack at him.
"When nobody else wanted me they did and I'll defintely have to take that into consideration when it's time to make a decision," Vick said.
Vick is playing in the last year of a two-year deal. With the way he's played thus far -- he was named NFC offensive player of the month in September and NFC offensive player of the week for his performance against the Colts -- Vick could be the premier free agent on the market in the off-season.
"It's great to be in this position but the only thing I want to do is concentrate [on playing]," Vick said Thursday afternoon following practice. "I know we're winning and we're playing well. Sky's the limit for everything."
The Eagles, of course, could place a franchise tag on Vick even before he reaches free agency. The NFL labor unrest could also factor into the team's decision to either give him an extension sometime before the end of this year or following the season.
Vick, who took over as the Eagles' full-time starter in Week 3 when he replaced Kevin Kolb, has started only four games this season. He missed three games when he injured his rib cartilage last month against the Redskins. Kolb jumped back in as the starter for three games and amassed a 2-1 record.
Kolb, once deemed the heir apparent after the Eagles traded Donovan McNabb in April, is signed through next season.
Vick, who is the league's leading passer, returned on Sunday and guided the 5-3 Eagles past the Colts, 26-24. He'll face the Redskins again on Monday night.
- The Eagles would be stupid to let Vick walk. Trade Klob for a 1st rounder and get a top o-lineman. II really believe we have a chance to win it all this year if the d and oline tighten up. elijah29
Great...dog killer is the face of the team. bradlidgesmole
lol, it only took 2 posts. I hope they extend Vick's contract too but I seriously doubt any but a reeeeally desperate team would give up a 1st rounder for KK. I could see a bottom 2nd rounder & a conditional pick at most. What I'd like to see more though is extend both & tell them fight it out in camp next season (if there is one) & the best one starts & the other better be ready to jump in there and play at a high level. Alas, though I think the Eagles are too cheap to keep both. Mabus- bradlidgesmole -- a guess you rather have a pig/fox/coyote killer as the face of the team.
Hey Bradlidgesmole i guess you live in Russia or China where people arent given a second chance? People that have committed all kinds of heinous crimes get a second chance. I Vick's case he is doing more good than most not only on the field but also telling others about his mistake. I for one am CHEERING him on. Jvazquez
it's doesn't sound like a hometown discount to the wolf,,Mike wants a long term quarranteed contract,,a 31 yr old running QB is too risky..KK start warming up.. wolf 4
Glad you said that Phil. Funny how some of these mopes can't get past the dog issue but have no trouble forgetting about good ole boy KK's perchant for slaughtering wildlife. Yeah, dog fighting is soooo much worse than gutting a wild pig with a bowie knife. tpizza
LoL at Wolf...claiming for 3 years like a good troll that KK, the great white hope would take this team to the promised land for 2010 until 20-forever. Kolb will be in Cleveland next year I think JmH Reborn
Vick is just a "running" QB. bradlidgesmole
You can't assume that we can slap him with the franchise tag. Until a new labor agreement is reached, we don't know if the franchise tag will exist. mikeyhigs
Nice Freudian slip wiff. You need to be "quarranteed" from the rest of humanity. Whatever you got, I don't want it. BTW, Manning is 34, Brady 33 so I'm sure you wouldn't want them either? And you drooled over Methuselah Favre as a great signing by the Vikes but don't want a 31 year old with 2 years less wear and tear than he normally would have? Wiffocrite, warming up is all KK is ever going to do...as a back up...somewhere. tpizza
Vick is just a "running" QB...who happens to be the league's leading passer. lol, nice not-too-subtle "code" word Mabus- Aren't Manning and Brady also potential free agents in 2011?
dogs kill people too!!! sign vick to a 4 year deal. trade Kolb for what you can get,, work the O-line and the secondary and you're good to go! osi is hurt boohoo- Awww....bradligdemole...don't cry b/c he killed a couple pooches...shoot,u better pray dog killer will remain the face of the franchise...he is the only hope we have this year and beyond...
My neighbor has a dog I can't stand. Any chance Vick would become my neighbor? MasterOFunk
get a clue, you cant compare hunting with what Vick did. And Im all for him getting a second chance. That being said, Saint Bernards are a delicacy in China peteike
I don't know why people have problems with "running" QBs, if there really is such a thing. They sure as hell love all the third-and-long conversions these "running" QBs sometimes convert. Vick beat Manning and that means he and the Birds could just have likely won a Superbowl. WantToKnow- I think the decision might also take into consideration if there is an 18 game season - it might be better signing Vick long term AND keeping Kolb. Yes Kolb would walk after 2011, but that's a long time from now.
Pete, not to belabor the point which has been beat to death but I think you can compare the two things. Hunting is a "sport" to some and dog fighting is a "sport" to others. The only difference is the legality of it all. In both cases animals die or are maimed to amuse us "superior" beings. What's the difference between dog fighting and bull fighting other than that one society views one as abhorant while another cheers? To say there is a big difference is splitting hairs and reminds me of Al Gores "no controlling legal authority" quote so it's all OK so long as long as it's accepted. This is the time of year I get to watch deer walk through my backyard with arrows stuck in them or their legs blown off...all in the name of "legal" sport so to say there is a big difference...uh uh, no difference at all. No attack on you Pete, just my opinion. tpizza
Father of the Year Andy Reid and the dog killer...the perfect couple. Dr. Michael
tpizza says, "This is the time of year I get to watch deer walk through my backyard with arrows stuck in them or their legs blown off." ROTFLMFAO!!! Yeah, I don't think anything is walking through your backyard if its legs are blown off. Roland Orzabal & Curt Smith- tpizza -- thanx for explaining that. the bottomline is that animals are being killed for human pleasure. the same exact thing.
when you hunt you kill the animal very fast, or at least attempt to in most cases, a kill shot. Theres no abuse involved, animal dies. Dogs were abused both in training and in fighting each other and then in death, thrown against the wall, eloctrocuted etc. Big difference. Bull fighting is def similar to dog fighting since it involves abusing the animal before killing it. Its not so hard to figure out that in this country, people love their dogs, so they are completely disgusted by this and it will follow him his entire career, just the way it is. American thing, def not a worldly view. peteike
This dog killing convict was just a heartbeat away from being suspended the entire season if anyone would have testified over the birthday gangsta shootings. I hope the Eagles are stupid enough to sign him and let Kolb go and I get to watch it backfire in their faces. bill19666
its intent to abuse as opposed to intent to kill. A comparison to factory farming might be better, more abuse there although not intended peteike
LOL never saw anything walk with there legs blown off LOL..,,to compare Mike to Peyton Manning and Tom Brady is idiotic and Brett Favre looked pretty good last sunday playing on one leg..JMO. wolf 4
roland, leg, how's that? I meant multiple deer, 1 leg each, but thanks for missing the point which is that it isn't enjoyable to watch an animal suffer as it LIMPS across your property with only 3 legs. But then again it's legal...Pete, again, no argument that Vick's actions were a disgrace but in your own words "attempt to kill". As I explained I get to see those missed attempts on a yearly basis and it isn't any prettier. Last year there was a beautiful buck killed near my house and that "thoughtful, legal" hunter was considerate enough to cut off the head and leave the rest by the side of the road. Normally that's something you can expect from a bwana from NYC up here to destroy mother nature. Sorry that's no different than dog fighting, if not worse. tpizza

Go mike Vick! Stop hating. He did his time. If you were in his shoes, how would you feel? beefbr
Whatever the intent the result in many cases is the same. That's the problem and that's my point but I also understand yours. Again, no attack on you. Thanks. tpizza
Some guy on ESPN got fired when Vick was first charged because he said Mike Vick would be better off if he just raped some girl. I find it funny in a sad way how true that is. Big Ben welcomed back with open arms. Mike Tyson still gets work and no one cares. The SPCA kills more dogs every day then Mike Vick did and still people seem to care more about dogs then people. Hey wiff, you DO know that there was a time when killing Indians was legal too, right? Ever Google Phil Sheridan like I told you too? Get a clue and stop showing off your single digit IQ. tpizza
I bet Wolf isnt no Native American. Just some European masquerading around here with probably a Great Great Great Great Great Great Grand Dad who was Cherokee. JMO BooDuhBud
Booduhbud, I think if the Indians knew that there was a possibility that their decendents could be someone like wiff, they would have commited mass suicide on the spot. tpizza- You won't get a first rounder for Kolb, and I don't think you would get more than a late second round, mosre likely a third rounder. It sure would be nice to get him a little more time to move his value up. They could use the draft to get Oline, CB, Oline, Oline, Oline,
Wouldn't Pouncey be nice to have instead of Graham? pking222

Zeru, you gave wiff a lot to digest. I'm not sure his feeble mind can grasp what you're talking about. Comparisons aren't his strong point like comparing the ages of various QBs. He just doesn't have the aptitude for intelligent discourse. There was an actual attempt at some civil comments re. Vick occurring here tonight and then wiff and the other mope showed up. End of civil comments, send in the clowns. tpizza

Zeru, 5 will get you 10 he's gone for the night. When confronted with logic and stone cold facts wiff beats a quick retreat. tpizza

Zeru, I'm all for people making up their own minds and I'm equally sure of the outcome of your quest. Wiff gives idiots a bad name. tpizza

the only risk you take in signing Vick long term is the upfront bonus otherwise you dont lose a dime when these guys get hurt unlike baseball's guaranteed money. there are no guarantees in life and definitely not in football.. wavydavy2000
I said this before and I am saying it again. Kolb isn't Aaron Rodgers he is way more comparable to Mr. Rodgers! Sign Vick to a 3 or 4 year deal and dump Kolb for whatever you can get. I would try Denver, McDaniels gave up Hillis and 2 draft picks for Brady Quinn, we may get 2 1st rounders from him for Kolb! phillies09
I like that one Zeru. Good luck in your adventure but I think you'll find it was easier for Frodo to get the ring back to Mount Doom than to have an intelligent tete-a-tete with wiff. It's like trying to talk logic with Al Bundy. Case in point? Wiff's favorite website is www.moronregistry.com, of which he is the original inductee. Talk soon Zeru. tpizza
McDaniels was the second inductee... tpizza
Yet another story on Philly.com about the Eagles - YAWN! 69chargerse- They betetr sign Vick. Kolb can play, but Vick is better elijah29
The eagles MUST resign Vick. Letting him go would be monumentally stupid. valorius
Wolf...really dude...did you get your football knowledge out of a cracker jack box...my 5 year old is smarter about the sport then you are... merlinknghts
WHAT ABOUT ALL THE PLAYERS IN THE NFL THAT KILLED REAL PEOPLE..EX: RAY LEWIS, DONTE STALLWORTH, LENARD LITTLE...AND LETS NOT FORGET ABOUT THE RAPIST BIG BEN...WERE TALKING ABOUT DOGS!! DOGS!! HE DID HIS TIME, HE IN SINCERE, IT'S TIME THAT WE GIVE THE MAN A CHANCE!!! Philly_Bully- Vick is the most exciting player in the league. Phreaking amazing.
The Eagles will franchise Vick, and keep Kolb. With Vicks style of play, how much longer do you see him here. I can see the Eagles keeping Kolb as insurance. The O-Line isn't very good, and both QB's have been injured this season. Vick gets Franchised, and Kolb is kept on the roster. Maybe he signs something mid next season, but then hell be a year older and his body may have taken some wear and tear. Only way i see them resigning Vick long term (more then 2 years) is if he gets us deep in the playoffs. besides, we don't even know the state of the league for next season yet. jaydlaw
The question will be how much does he want and how long will the contract be. No doubt his performance right now deserves contract discussions but Vick's talents can be shut down by defenses. Lets see if they get into the playoffs, and then lets see how a defense shuts him down when it really counts. Then lets see how many bloggers think the Eagles should sign him to a big contract. His history shows he can't get it done in the big games. Maybe that's changed, but we still got to see it first. Ron
Is anyone willing to sign Vick other than the Eagles? I'm not convinced. The Eagles popularity has fallen and Vick is the most hated athlete in all of sports. Plus all the owners know Art Blank and most of them have more class in their pinky than Lurie has. With all the great young QBs coming out of college (Bradford, Stafford, McCoy) why would an up and coming team want to rebuild with a 30-something running QB with all the off the field risks and on the field limitations of Mike Vick? He was shopped around aggressively this off season with no takers, so I'm afraid the Eagles are stuck with him due to Andy Reid's desire to cement his reputation by coach the dictionary definition of a coach killer. jtj06- Go figure this guy is willing to give the Eagles first crack at him. I didn't hear Jason Werth say he would give the Phillies first crack at him. Didn't the Phillies give him his chance? Loyalty is a funny thing isn't it? delcodanno
I would like to personally thank Zeru77, for providing the most informative post/message/blog I have seen on Philly.com. That includes from any of the "writers" currently employed. Not only did he provide FACTS, but he has shut up wolf 4, and obviously no other haters can be ignorant enough to go against what he says. I thank you Zeru77...As Shaq once said, "Hey WOLF, tell me how my (beep) tastes..." EaglesBleedMoney
jtj06 - probably because for every Stafford (injured once again), McCoy, and Bradford, there are two Brady Quinn's, Alex Smith's, David Carr's, Matt Leinart's, Ryan Leaf's, etc. Whatever Vick has done stats-wise, or off the field, what is one thing he has done? Win. He is only 30, less the 2 years of not getting banged up while he was incarcerated. I know as a fan you may not see it this way, but as an NFL coach, you can't be "rebuilding" all the time while keeping your job. Coaches need to win to be employed. How many times have those teams changed coaches in the past 10 years? EaglesBleedMoney
a 5 year 90-100 mil contract to a 31 year old running QB is a difficult decision for Joe Banner to make,,the logic of 'he sat in jail for two years so he's two years younger' is a joke-what about his drinking and pot smoking for atleast 10 years that aged him +4 years,,the risks out weigh the rewards..i look at the BIG PICTURE for the team,,a 5 year deal is too risky and will set the team back in the future,,,ZERO77-ppizza-bleedgreen just last april you were praising McFraud and saying 'be careful for what you wish for'.......wolf. wolf 4
Hahah yea, and if it weren't for Vick we probably wouldn't be sitting here at 5-3. And please stop calling people out for saying things in the past that haven't taken fruition, you are the poster child of horrible predictions. EaglesBleedMoney
Here you moronic fans and sports writers go again. What a bunch of band-wagon jumpers. What if they lose again to the Deadskins?? How good will be Vick be then??? I'm hoping Vick shreds those guys as I hate the Deadskins especially since I live down here now. The papers and media have been playing up the McNabb benching - he really should've been bench after his last pick, and trumpeting the play of Vick. Did everyone forget the Birds lost to the Deadskins at home!!!
As far as the Dog-fighting goes, people who write negative things on this blog about a guy who did his time - 2 years in the Fed - are:
1.) Trying to get a rise out of everyone
2.) Sexually repressed cookie baking WHITE houswives from the burbs
3.) Have no life Phillyexp

@bleedgreen i guess KK's dismantlement of the team with the best record in the NFL doesn't count you know the falcons you know i called that game 27-17,,it's a disgrace the way zero77-panpizza-bleedgreen bash Kevin Kolb day in and day out he beat the best team in the NFL and you stooges were MIA all week,,sounds like some reverse ism going on with you stooges.....this team can win with either QB Mike or KK,,Mike's 31 KK's 26 the future of the team and the BIG Picture is what Joe Banner has take into consideration BIRDS 31 DEADSKINS 13.......wolf. wolf 4

@zero77-don't pop the champagne yet,Mike beat a weaponless colts offense and still have four dropped picks including one sure pick six if the colts d-backs could catch,he only had 218 yards passing and only squeeked by the colts by 2 points (lucky for me i took peyton and the points for 2K)..lets see what happens the rest of the season, that's what Joe Banner is going to do..btw:let me know when Mike breaks the top 100 players list too..also you don't want to hitch your wagon to ppizza he can't carry my jock......wolf. wolf 4

Sign Vick to long term deal. Keep Kolb for next season i think he is only going to earn $1 million. So incase Vick gets hurt the Eagles have a pretty good back up that knows the system. reggleston38
