Vick: Will take Eagles' loyalty into consideration
Jeff McLane, Inquirer Staff Writer
Michael Vick knows that he's put himself in a much better position in terms of his long-term future with his play this season, but the Eagles quarterback said that he isn't concerned right now about a new contract or where he's going to play next season.
But when it comes time to make a decision -- if he ever becomes a free agent -- Vick said that the Eagles, who signed him in Aug. 2009 not long after he was released from prison, could get the first crack at him.
"When nobody else wanted me they did and I'll defintely have to take that into consideration when it's time to make a decision," Vick said.
Vick is playing in the last year of a two-year deal. With the way he's played thus far -- he was named NFC offensive player of the month in September and NFC offensive player of the week for his performance against the Colts -- Vick could be the premier free agent on the market in the off-season.
"It's great to be in this position but the only thing I want to do is concentrate [on playing]," Vick said Thursday afternoon following practice. "I know we're winning and we're playing well. Sky's the limit for everything."
The Eagles, of course, could place a franchise tag on Vick even before he reaches free agency. The NFL labor unrest could also factor into the team's decision to either give him an extension sometime before the end of this year or following the season.
Vick, who took over as the Eagles' full-time starter in Week 3 when he replaced Kevin Kolb, has started only four games this season. He missed three games when he injured his rib cartilage last month against the Redskins. Kolb jumped back in as the starter for three games and amassed a 2-1 record.
Kolb, once deemed the heir apparent after the Eagles traded Donovan McNabb in April, is signed through next season.
Vick, who is the league's leading passer, returned on Sunday and guided the 5-3 Eagles past the Colts, 26-24. He'll face the Redskins again on Monday night.
I would like to personally thank Zeru77, for providing the most informative post/message/blog I have seen on Philly.com. That includes from any of the "writers" currently employed. Not only did he provide FACTS, but he has shut up wolf 4, and obviously no other haters can be ignorant enough to go against what he says. I thank you Zeru77...As Shaq once said, "Hey WOLF, tell me how my (beep) tastes..." EaglesBleedMoney
jtj06 - probably because for every Stafford (injured once again), McCoy, and Bradford, there are two Brady Quinn's, Alex Smith's, David Carr's, Matt Leinart's, Ryan Leaf's, etc. Whatever Vick has done stats-wise, or off the field, what is one thing he has done? Win. He is only 30, less the 2 years of not getting banged up while he was incarcerated. I know as a fan you may not see it this way, but as an NFL coach, you can't be "rebuilding" all the time while keeping your job. Coaches need to win to be employed. How many times have those teams changed coaches in the past 10 years? EaglesBleedMoney
a 5 year 90-100 mil contract to a 31 year old running QB is a difficult decision for Joe Banner to make,,the logic of 'he sat in jail for two years so he's two years younger' is a joke-what about his drinking and pot smoking for atleast 10 years that aged him +4 years,,the risks out weigh the rewards..i look at the BIG PICTURE for the team,,a 5 year deal is too risky and will set the team back in the future,,,ZERO77-ppizza-bleedgreen just last april you were praising McFraud and saying 'be careful for what you wish for'.......wolf. wolf 4
Hahah yea, and if it weren't for Vick we probably wouldn't be sitting here at 5-3. And please stop calling people out for saying things in the past that haven't taken fruition, you are the poster child of horrible predictions. EaglesBleedMoney
Here you moronic fans and sports writers go again. What a bunch of band-wagon jumpers. What if they lose again to the Deadskins?? How good will be Vick be then??? I'm hoping Vick shreds those guys as I hate the Deadskins especially since I live down here now. The papers and media have been playing up the McNabb benching - he really should've been bench after his last pick, and trumpeting the play of Vick. Did everyone forget the Birds lost to the Deadskins at home!!!
As far as the Dog-fighting goes, people who write negative things on this blog about a guy who did his time - 2 years in the Fed - are:
1.) Trying to get a rise out of everyone
2.) Sexually repressed cookie baking WHITE houswives from the burbs
3.) Have no life Phillyexp

@zero77-don't pop the champagne yet,Mike beat a weaponless colts offense and still have four dropped picks including one sure pick six if the colts d-backs could catch,he only had 218 yards passing and only squeeked by the colts by 2 points (lucky for me i took peyton and the points for 2K)..lets see what happens the rest of the season, that's what Joe Banner is going to do..btw:let me know when Mike breaks the top 100 players list too..also you don't want to hitch your wagon to ppizza he can't carry my jock......wolf. wolf 4

Comment removed.- Zeru77 -- man, you cant argue with imbeciles. facts means nothing to them. the only ammunition they have is the lack of common sense. which in their eyes is effective. its pretty sad. i feel bad for people like that. its obvious that they are facing deeper issues then just not liking vick.
