Vick leads Eagles past Lions

POSTED: Sunday, September 19, 2010, 4:36 PM

Did Michael Vick make you a believer in his start against Detroit?
Yes.
No.
I believed in him before.

DETROIT -- This was the Eagles offense everyone expected.

Of course, not many expected the 30-year-old Michael Vick to be the one leading the Young Guns.

But with starting quarterback Kevin Kolb out with a concussion, Vick stepped in and guided his team to a 35-32 victory Sunday as the Eagles held on for dear life and survived a late Lions push.

(A brief interruption: This might have been the Eagles defense everyone anticipated. The group nearly fumbled away the game despite a fourth quarter 18-point lead).

Vick, on the other hand, was impressive. The quarterback completed 21 of 34 passes for 284 yards and two touchdowns. He did not toss an interception. He also ran four times for 40 yards. Vick did all this while under constant pressure as the Eagles' leaky offensive line struggled against Detroit's front four and their blitzers.

Vick had help, though, most notably from running back LeSean McCoy. The second-year player eclipsed the 100-yard rushing mark for the first time in his career and became the first Eagles players to rush for three scores since Charlie Garner accomplished the feat in 1995.

Vick spread the ball around connecting with eight different receivers. DeSean Jackson led the team with four catches for 135 yards. He also scored a 45-yard touchdown in the first quarter. Jeremy Maclin had three catches for 26 yards, including a 9-yard touchdown right before the half that gave the Eagles a 21-17 lead.

Kolb is expected to return to practice next week. He and linebacker Stewart Bradley, who was also held out with a concussion, were cleared by the Eagles' medical staff, a team spokesman said Sunday.

Eagles coach Andy Reid has said Kolb is his No. 1 quarterback. If Kolb can go next week against Jacksonville it will be interesting to see how patient Reid will be with his young quarterback, who struggled against the Packers last week.

There is only one reason Vick has ever been questioned as to whether or not he should start for any team not having Brady, Manning, or Brees... Public Relations! The guy has alltime talent. Coach Reid will probably let Kolb start for a while to let him play his way out of Philly or prove he is the next Montana. The pressure on him is probably too much 4 most mortals but I wish him the best!!!

Vick got what he needed. Some game film. Today's game will be his resume when he heads off for the starting job he covets.

And you all wonder why people say Philly fans are the worst? 1 bad half of football and Kolb is now a career backup? You all are ridiculous. Aaron Rodgers struggled at times during his first year; Peyton Manning ALWAYS struggles against 3-4 defenses. 1 bad half is not indicative of how successful Kolb will be as a qb. You all are the same illogical, impatient fans who hated on the Phillies, Charlie Manuel and Ruben Amaro in July. After Kolb has a big game against the Jags you all will be on here calling him the next Steve Young.

I do like animals, but that wasn't the point. You commit a felony and try to get a job. Vick is a loser who can throw a football. He should not be in the NFL.

Actually Vick is the backup and will always be a backup for the rest of his career. Judging by the lack of interest from around the league, no team wants to build around him nor deal with the PR headache. He has not demonstrated anything that they don't already know. Kolb, on the other hand, is an unknown quantity at this point. Anyone that says otherwise either is a moron or has an ulterior motive.
