Vick: Giants 'didn't show great sportsmanship'

POSTED: Sunday, December 19, 2010, 9:26 PM

Yes, it was a devastating loss, but a number of Giants players simply walked off the New Meadowlands turf after DeSean Jackson's game-winning punt return touchdown before shaking hands with the Eagles, according to several players.

"I just thought for them to walk off the field at the end really didn’t show great sportsmanship," Eagles quarterback Michael Vick said. "We still have the utmost respect for those guys. Those were the ones doing a lot talking.”

Asked to give a comment about what the Giants players were saying to the Eagles during the game, center Mike McGlynn said, "You don't want to hear what I have to say."

The implication was that what he had to say wasn't going to be flattering. The Eagles' remarkable 38-31 comeback win over the Giants gives them six straight over New York. A rematch in the playoffs is not out of the question.

Here are some other noteworthy quotes from after the game:

ASANTE SAMUEL ON PUNTING TO JACKSON:
"Oh my God, that was crazy. Wasn't it? I don't know what's going to happen to [Giants punter Matt Dodge], but I'm sure Tom Coughlin is pretty upset."

JACKSON ON HIS EARLY FRUSTRATIONS:
"All game they was on me, they double teamed me, did this and did that, and Vick kind of seen I was frustrated. It was tough, man, especially going out there and the competitior I am. When they focus on me so hard and I want to do so great and sometimes it’s other defenses aren’t going to allow that and Vick kept telling me, 'Man, come on, man, keep your head up, you’re going to get one, you’re going to get one.' And we kept plugging away and we got one."

VICK ON COMEBACK:
"We were discouraged in the first half that we didn't make the most of our opportunities to put the ball in the end zone. We had some turnovers. And we just said to ourselves, 'Listen, we're just going to go out there and play for pride above anything else. They may beat us, 49-25, but we're going to play with pride and we can't complain.' And that's all I want to ask of my teammates, and my offensive line, to play with some pride and enjoy the game."

JASON AVANT ON JEREMY MACLIN'S DOWNFIELD BLOCKING:
"Maclin does an outstanding job. Best that I’ve seen since I’ve been here."

AVANT ON EAGLES ONSIDE KICK:
"I couldn’t believe that they let us get it, though. I definitely didn’t think that was going to work."

BOBBY APRIL ON DESEAN'S PUNT RETURN:
"DeSean, when he gets in space, you know what happens."

QUINTIN MIKELL ON IMPACT OF ONSIDE KICK:
"When we got that, you kind of see their sideline, they kind of started to tense up. Naturally you tend to be like 'Oh crap, what’s going to happen?' On our sidelines we said, 'We’re going to get this thing, We’re going to go get it.' And that’s what we did."

DAVID AKERS ON VICTORY:
"Greatest game in Eagles history that I've been a part of, by far."

GIANTS RUNNING  BACK BRANDON JACOBS:
"I've never been through anything worse than this one. That's the way the marbles roll."

DODGE ON WHETHER TOM COUGHLIN TOLD HIM TO PUNT OUT OF BOUNDS:
"I think everyone on the sideline did. And I knew it. He didn't have to tell me. It wasn't rocket science not to kick it to him with 12 seconds left, but sometimes you don't execute as well as you'd like."

You should be ashamed of yourself for that comment. He has clearly changed as a person more than a quarterback and deserves respect for that. And in relation to the article, the Giants proved to me that they are classless for leaving the field when the game ended and for what they apparently said during the game. The Eagles wouldnt have done that if they lost that game, I can assure you that.

@JP - Well that's a stupid statement. Don't the other 52 players deserve sportsmanship? Would the birds be sportsmans if they lost? Put down the keyboard next time loser.

clearly making dodge the scapegoat is giants B.S. if the game comes down to the final play being a punt, and the punter gets a crappy snap, it would have been just as bad if he was sacked. why not blame the whole team for not stopping jackson as he bobbled the ball. sure it's the first punt return touchdown game ender ever, and will be in the hall of fame, but the giants blew this game, not the punter. he did his job. better snap, and he punts it outta bounds. note to giants: don't give up 28 points in the fourth quarter.

Knew I'd get a good response from people who would forgive Ted Bundy if he could score TDs for the Eagles. Changed man already? Why? There has been one speech he gave that said what he did was inhumane. Conveniently, it didn't come until after Plaschke had an article on a surviving dog. All others referred to what he did to his family and himself. That's why I'm no longer a bird's fan.
I've done my research - too early to tell if he's changed. Hope he has. Still have to not the irony of the quote.

Apparently JPCase, you haven't done enough research. Michael Vick lost everything he had, served mandatory jail time and has huge debts stemming from that whole fiasco. You must think he lives the good life now!! Far from it, JP!! There isn't a day that Michael Vick wakes up that he knows what debt obligations he must fulfill and walk the straight and narrow, or the rug will be pulled out from under him!! I don't deny anything he might have done, but your negative comments smack of envy, not of any concern for his redemption. Yes, he made mistakes. Big and HUGE mistakes, but his life is reminded of them everyday through the debts owed and the microscope he is now judged off and on the field. So, buck up JP, and do some more research on how Michael Vick lives his life today, not just in the past when he was screwing up!! Don't try to rain on his parade because you can't find it in your heart to forgive. Your inability to forgive Michael Vick says more about you than it says about him. I could care less if he takes the Eagles to the Super Bowl or he wins the MVP, but allow him the dignity to try to redeem himself on and off the field. I think those of us who have made some mistakes in our lives root for people who try to change and try to be better people than they have been. I hope he succeeds.

Michael Vick is a complete POS that should have rotted in jail and been tortured, but that doesn't mean he isn't a good QB. I will never respect the guy, ever, but I will be glad if the Eagles win.

Outstanding comment, RunningTheBases. Perfectly said. Peace to you, and also to you, JPCase. Forgiveness is for the forgiver... to remove hate from the heart so that it isn't used as a cheap excuse to sin against others with the anger being kept. Wash your hands of the hatred -- for you. No one says you have to trust Vick, because forgiveness and trust are two separate things. But forgive... get rid of the hatred and let God handle the consequences. Feel the freedom of giving someone the same chance at redemption that you want for all your sin and indiscretions in life. If you cannot encourage with trust, JP, we understand, At least free yourself by forgiveness. Peace all.

Really JP what research have you done? I also find it amazing that Vick gets all this attention for doing wrongdoing but what does Roethlisberger and Stallworth get. Has Stallworth given any speeches on drunk driving or Roethlisberger on immaturity and binge drinking? And JP, how come both the Humane Society president and the judge that sentenced him, have both come out and offered their support? How come every commentator has come out and said even the way he carries himself is different? How come him and Kevin Kolb are great friends? How come Celek came out and says he has the highest amount of respect for him? You're right JP, if he was on a different team, I would not like him but he has opened my eyes to what redemption is, and I am thankful to see that. Everybody deserves a second chance. And because of him, I hope the likes of Burress and Clarrett make it back too. Here's to you Mike Vick, not the football player but the man. Oh and by the way, yeah, in over 30 years of being an Eagles fan, besides the NFC Championship Game, that was my favorite moment. Thank you Birds for making Christmas that more special this year!

I love how so many Eagles fans refer to murder as "a mistake" or "a lack of good judgement" I wonder if they would be so forgiving if he had tortured and killed children instead of dogs? Why do they get so angry when someone, like JP, simply speaks of the things Vick has done? They have to jump to his defense, so quickly and forcefully!! They're entitled to their opinions, so why aren't those who haven't forgiven Vick entitled to their opinion without being attacked for it? And why the dislike for Kolb by loopy williams? I'm a die hard Eagles fan for almost 40 years and I find it very hard to root for the Eagles with Vick as the leader.

Thats the exact question you need to answer yourself. But the TRUTH is, he did it to dogs. Biggest dog lover in the world here, but guess the EFF what? They are NOT human beings, they are dogs. Look throughout the world and you'll find many differing opinions of what a dog "is" in their histories and societies. Donte Stallworth and Big Ben are way worse and served ALOT less than MV. Donte KILLED a human being and PAID his way out of it. Big Ben has proven to NOT know the dangers of binge drinking, nor that cornering underage women in club bathrooms to possibly sexually assault them is WRONG. Ben also didnt apparently know that every woman who works in a hotel and is sent to his room to complete a job/task isn't there to be held down and sexually assaulted. What MV served was fair for what he did. He served and was released. Leave the guy alone. I dont defend HIM or his PRIOR ACTIONS. But, I DO defend his right to redemption. And how many idiots posting anti-vick stuff here today know someone who has needed a second chance?? I am willing to bet, more than a few in this city. Finally, with all the legal nonsense pro athletes get into these days, at least Michael Vick OWNS his mistakes. I dont see very many who stumble and OWN the footsteps that brought them there....

Hey Ericyshel...comparing children to dogs; really? Vick leads the NFL in pro bowl votes across the U.S., so I'm sure he's not losing sleep over your opinion. What...you root for him to get slammed at the 1, so your favorite Eagle scores.

Hey JP, Maybe you're right. Maybe Vick hasn't changed at all. Maybe he has no right to speak of sportsmanship. But does that justify the Giants walking off the field like that? When I went to pick up my son from school the other day, I saw a kid playing basketball saying that he should be allowed to cheat because his friend on the other team cheated 10 minutes ago. You reminded me of the kid. You must have the logic of an 8 year old. LOL

"Sportsmanship?" Does he mean "sportsmanship" like DeSean Jackson rubbing the Giants' noses in it, taunting them by unnecessarily extending the punt return - running sideline to sideline - before taking it in for the score? Hopefully, some future Eagles' opponent will put an early end to Jackson's season and teach him a lesson with a little "after the whistle" demonstration.

Yeah, Angry Al, hit it on the nose. Why would the Giants stay around and shake hands after DeSean's taunting on the TD? As for McGlynn, I hope the Redskins and Giants continue to tick him off, because he then plays with extra attitude. After DeSean's antics, the Cowboys and Giants will be trying extra hard to go 4-0 against us next year. He takes these great plays and ruins them at the end. That's not sportsmanship or entertainment.

Jackson needs to get into the end zone. There's a difference between showboating and doing something stupid. His actions while the play is still live are ridiculous. Win a Super Bowl first, then you can grandstand all you want.

But you gotta admit -- he was pretty sharp during the press conference to bring up the idea that he was being sure to run the clock down to zero, which is high football IQ if true. I wonder whether there would have been a few seconds left for a Giants miracle had he run the ball straight in???

Really??? Let's see Dante Stallworth killed a man. The issue is the american tradition and love affair with man's best friend, the dog. In this country, we treat dogs as humans. In other countries, people eat dogs. This coming from someone who owns a dog. Would Mike Vick be persecuted as he has been if this were a country where people ate dogs?

Regardless, of his prior actions, he has paid the price for his actions. Isn't this supposed to be a forgiving nation? Or do we just forgive when it's convenient to forgive or when it is politically correct to forgive?

If you had 2 kids and a dog, and it were only possible for two of them to live, would you select one kid and the dog?? I don't think so!!!
  • 0 like this / 0 don't   •   Posted 11:36 AM, 12/20/2010
    Stop with the false comparisons:
    1. Stallworth truly made a MISTAKE - and a bad one, but the facts show that his BAC was .12, barely above the limit; the guy he ran over was largely at fault for darting right in front of him; and Stallworth immediately stopped, tried to help the guy, etc. He did not run away or try to hide his actions. Now, engaging in a long-term PATTERN of sociopathic and cruel behavior to dogs is something that NEVER should be minimized by the word "mistake."
    2. The "price" Vick paid could not be more irrelevant. Give me time and I could list 50 criminal sociopaths who "paid the price." Their crimes were not against me, so forgiveness is not mine to give, and their behavior was so disgusting I will never like them.
    2. What does choosing between saving a dog and a kid have to do with anything? Do you think those who have not forgiven Vick would choose to save a dog over a kid? Ridiculous.

So, let's hope MV has truly become the reformed leader and solid citizen it seems, but let's also see where he is 5-10 years from now. It is a story still being written. And when I see a comment on here that really "exposes" someone like JPCase as a hypocrite, I'll be the first to admit it. Right now, Case makes me pause before going crazy with praise over Vick's MVP season. Probably a good thing.

I'll stand up -- but, AR made the right choice to play Vick over KK. MV is playing MUCH better than he ever showed before in his career -- I think he should have the lead for MVP after what he did in the 4th Q yesterday. I guess AR is also a front-runner...

It's nice to know that if MV gets splattered some week (and I will not be a bit surprised if it happens) that the Birds have a very capable backup. This week's events in DC proved once again AR knows QBs. My guess is AR would not have done what he did last year unless he knew KK to be a very good QB. The guy has some records of his own, you know...

Since we're talking about Vick, I have a hard time rooting for him. Hurting a dog is like hurting a child. He picked on a defenseless creature that couldn't defend itself. I hope the team does well but I'm not buying the Vick comeback story. There's something wrong with a person who harms a defenseless person or animal. I don't know if a person like that can be rehabilitated or can turn off the barbaric tendencies.

I can't say I blame the Giants for leaving the field, a defeat like that is tough to absorb. The defense and special teams gave the game away to the Eagles. The comments I read were all respectable. It is a great rivalry, but lets not make the Giants out to be the evil empire, (we all know that is in Dallas).

Giants' fans are so classy. You'd think they'd be able to handle this loss with dignity and grace. They've had enough practice. Let's face it. Everyone in Philly knows our city is better than NYC. NYC would be a great place to live if it wasn't full of NYers. NYC is living off of its past. Philly is all about now and beating the Giants, winning the World Series and bringing the cup back to the greatest hockey city on the planet. Sports dominate american culture and Philly rules!
