Vick on pressure, expectations of going No. 1
Jonathan Tamari
Andrew Luck will be the number one pick in the NFL draft Thursday night, making him the 31st quarterback to go first overall, and the 10th in the last 12 years. It’s a unique fraternity that comes with prestige, money and huge expectations. Mike Vick knows this, having gone number one overall to the Falcons in 2001, beginning a string of five years in which a QB was the first to hear his name called in New York.
(With Luck’s expected selection Thursday, it will bring the current streak of top pick quarterbacks to four).
Vick and several other number one overall QBs spoke to the NFL Network about all that goes along with the honor of being chosen first. The interviews are part of a four-part series, The Ones, airing this week. Vick, who has admitted to not studying very hard with Atlanta recommended that any QB taken first get in his playbook.
“Make sure you study,” Vick told the network. “I would have studied more. You’ve got to be in that book and you’ve got to understand the concepts and what you’re doing as a team and what you want to get accomplished at the end of the day.”
He also said there is little patience for first overall picks, who are expected to elevate their franchises. Vick and ex-Cowboy Troy Aikman both said the pressure was truly ratcheted up in year two.
“Going into my second year, the pressure was on, I understood that year, we had to go to the playoffs,” Vick said.
He got the Falcons into the postseason that year, beating the Packers in Green Bay before losing to the Eagles, and he went to the NFC title game in 2004, where he again lost to the Eagles. Vick hasn’t been as deep into the playoffs since.
Vick also remembered the joy of going first.
“I’ll never forget my mom jumping for joy,” he said. “It was probably hard for her to believe that it was actually happening, so that hug was still tighter than the ones I got growing up.”
It’s a feeling of excitement and accomplishment few have experienced, and one Luck should enjoy shortly after 8 p.m. Thursday.
(The Ones is airing on NFL Network’s NFL Total Access at 7 p.m. this week and Thursday at 1 p.m. as part of their pre-draft show)

Vick should be taking advice, not giving it! Geno D- Oh I guess he should be taking advise from you the king of trailer trash, no talent, nobody who spews hate on this blog daily, because you have no talent or money, loser.
Blessed8251
@GenoD Vick is a grown man and should be doing exactly what he wants. Who the hell are u to tell another person what they should and shouldn't be doing. charmaine
This comment has been deleted. Dexter-Morgan- OK your turn Dexter, time to post your life mistakes also, so that you can forever be held to it, and lose your right to post or have advice to anyone else. FOREVER. Comon, you seem to have time lets hear it.
hawaiiphillyfan - @Dexter-Morgan, people should not kill, steal, lie, be hypricrites or frauds and most of all hate etc. Now with that being said which category do you fall into, I know that you fall into at least two of those categories, hate and hyprocrite. Why don't you enlighten us with the others?? Now run along and try to get some advice on that hate issue, you need it. Oh yes one more thing, if indeed Vick needs advice, I am more than sure he wouldn't need it from you, hell you can't even keep up with the topic, playoffs was never mentioned. Get a life LOSER

Vick is a fraud and a sissy; he will never be a true man. A true man grows up, matures and becomes a responsible citizen. Real men treat women with respect and do not kill dogs. Now Vick should be the second pick to leave the Eagles; Reid should be first pick to be let go. No SB with this duo!! oneway- OK oneway, time to post your life mistakes, so that you can forever be held to it, and lose your right to post anything about anyone else. FOREVER. OK, lets hear it.
hawaiiphillyfan - I guess you believe you're a man huh, check again buddy you're not and a long way from it. Real men don't sit on the internet whining, that's what frauds, sissies, and punks do, responsible citizens get out and do something about the problem they don't cry babies in cyberspace. Another thing a real man doesn't hide behind a keyboard to say what they has to say, a real man does that face to face

Vick is a coward who killed helpless dogs for his "enjoyment". It is a disgrace that Lurie and Reid made Vick the Eagles leader. phil500- OK now it's your turn phil500, time to post your life mistakes, so that you can forever be held to it, and we can constantly talk about how it's a "disgrace" that your employer keep you around. Because it is a "disgrace" that even though you've made mistakes that you are employed, right? OK, comon lets hear it.
hawaiiphillyfan - You're confused there a little aren't you, You're the disgrace, all the animal cruelty/dogfighting going on right there in Philly and all you can do is sit on the internet and whine about some dogs that have been dead for years, fact is had Vick not been a star NFL player you wouldn't have known a thing about those dogs nor would you have cared. Nothing worse than a fake, such as you.
charmaine - Where in this article did they ask you about dogs, stop smoking drugs and stay on topic, which it seems you have no clue about what the article is about

The Vick haters are out early today. Say what you want about him in ATL, but he's been a professional since the day he signed as an Eagle. dragoon6
MV7, you have to understand most of your haters are perfect people that have never needed forgiveness for anything. Oh to be as mighty as they are.

It absolutely amazes me to no end, how everyone just will not let the dog issue go. He made huge mistakes, and paid the price. I love dogs, but I will say how often do some of you see HUMANS being killed/maimed/tortured, and think about it as long as it takes you to read the article. How about the living conditions that some HUMANS are forced to live in, how much energy do you put into those facts and issues? And this comes from a man that has a PERMANANT scar from a dog maul, that I deserved for sitting out front of my home. But I still don't hold dogs forever in bondage. hawaiiphillyfan
These Vick haters are amazing...So confident behind a computer. I bet if you were face to face with him, you'd be smiling and asking for an autogragh and not saying how you truly feel. That's a coward/fraud/sissy. The man did his time for killing dogs...yeah..not human life, dogs..We still have child molesters in the news walking the streets and murders who have served the same or no time for killing human beings. Get a life and get your priorities straight. It's real easy to jump on someone elses dirty laundry. Post yours so we can get on you. macdini87- macdini, I have in fact asked for the resumes of some such as Dexter-Morgan, oneway, and phil500, some of our fellow posters on here. Doubt if they will comply however. Trust me, in my days growing up in Philly, I've made some transgressions that were serious. But you know what, I was forgiven and given the way to prove myself better, and I made a 21 year honorable career in the military, and now has been entrusted enough to earn 6 figures. I appreciate individuals such as yourself that did not hold my past against me forever.
hawaiiphillyfan
Hawaiiphillyfan. I don't hold anything against anybody because we're all human beings and we make mistakes/sin. There is only one that is perfect. I respect someone who can man up and admit their wrongs and get on the right course. That's honorable to me. I can't stand those who rides on someone elses past behavior like they've never committed any wrong. I don't want to get too spiritual, so I'll leave it at that. From a current Soldier (15 years) to a former Soldier, thank you for your service and positive contribution to society. macdini87

These Vick lovers are pathetic, they must be scum bags like Vick. phil500
hawaiiphillyfan I would match my life's resume against yours any day. Have I made mistakes? Certainly. But I did not senselessly kill dogs or any other animals for monetary gain or just for the thrill. Vick is only sorry because he got caught and it almost cost him millions of dollars. If he had not gotten caught, he would still be killing dogs. If he was not a well known athlete, people would be less inclined to overlook his inhumane acts. What do your earnings have to do with you character? Are you bragging? Enough said. oneway- Sure you have made mistakes, we all have, just like we were all given second chances, an opportunity to correct whatever mistakes it is that we have made. How would you like for someone to continue throwing your mistakes up in your face?? How would you have liked it had no one given you a second chance?? It didn't almost cost Vick millions of dollars it did cost him millions of dollars. How do you know that he was just sorry he was caught, ever had the opportunity to talk with him. Fact is people have been committing this exact same crime for years prior to Vick, and have continued to do so after Vick, if your concern was truly about "dogs" you would know this. Enough said.

I am so sick and tired of people that try to rationalize what this guy did, because other people are evil also. The eagles sold their soul to the devil for a few more victories, and it backfired. He is a joke that is making $100,000,000. And IS STILL the most hated athlete in all of sports. And there he has quite a bit of competetion. sackvicknow- I am so sick and tired of people like you who try to rationalize your hate because of some dogs. You go from site to site saying the exact same thing. Its people like you who make real animal activist look bad. You're the joke, fake, fraud and a lot more. I am a dog lover/owner, in addition to being a volunteer at a local animal rescue shetler. I know that what Vick did was wrong, but I also know that he has done a lot trying to correct the wrong the he has done. Its people like you who make me sick, I don't think people who rationalize is really what makes you sick, I believe it has more to do with the $100,000,000.
charmaine - Well this trash keeps popping up, she is the one that said she would never watch another Eagles game, never follow the team, but here she is again, with her jealousy of how much money Vick makes and still talking about some dogs from 5 years ago that she never saw or cared about, anything to justify her bitterness and hatred, there is a woman in Virginia that bought Vick's property claiming she loves dogs so much and now is under investigation for taking money for her own personal gain to pay a house and car off with money given for the dogs and all the dogs she has given to others to take care of, lying crooks like her and sackvicknow now don't a hoot about dogs these two POS are just pure racist, that are mad that this Man has made millions and their poor a## are still stuck in a trailer can't pay their lot payment and sure can't take care of a dog. Do yourself a favor and worry about how you are going to pay your bills. Instead of what Vick is doing because incase you did not know it he is a millionaire and you are PWT and that is what you will always be and if you are dumb enough to really think he is the most hated man in sports, answer these questions why is he on every stations, why are they writing this article about him and not you? Why does he have over 1,324,000 followers on twitter, and another 2 million on facebook? Why does he have over 8 endorsements and you have nada? If that is what you called being hated I want to be hated like that. You are nothing but a POS who hates so excuse us if we don't care what you think loser, trash!!!
Blessed8251 - I don't think anyone is rationalizing anything that he has done. He's paid his debt to society, and to everyones knowledge, he has been a model citizen. What do you want him to do? Kill himself now? The NFL is LITTERED with wrongdoers (Murderers, rapists, child/woman abusers, thiefs), which I bet includes some of your NFL favorites. I bet you at one point and time cheered a Ray Lewis hit, or a Phillip Rivers touchdown pass. Ever cheered for Drew Brees? Bet you have, but he wasn't always the God fearing man that you see every Sunday. Did you know that? Tom Brady? Hmmmmmm. Is the dogfighting what really gets to you?
hawaiiphillyfan
A real man can admit his mistake and move on seems like to me you have have not admitted your mistake you keep speaking on vick the man has move on, let it go so you can move on to all that replies that vick is not a man and he is a good QB bassout
Thank you, thank you, thank you to hawaiiphillyfan, charmaine and blessed8251!!! You three are ON IT!! I vote you three for the beginning of 'Team Vick' if there is such a thing! Thank the Lord for folks like you to keep the haters at bay. Those chumps seem to think they can continue to throw hate on Mike Vick's name and not have someone speak out on it. The Eagles trusted him, his fans trust him and that's all that matters! You haters can continue spouting your nonsense but there are loyal fans like the 3 I just mentioned who will continue to pound your behinds into rational thought. And if it doesn't work, then that means that you haters never had a thought to begin with. GO MIKE VICK GO! Panthro2011
