Vick: It's painful right now

POSTED: Monday, November 14, 2011, 12:45 PM
Michael Vick broke two ribs on the second play of Sunday's game. (Yong Kim / Staff Photographer)

Mike Vick, walking a little more gingerly and slowly through the NovaCare Complex today, sounded unsure if he can play through broken ribs against the Giants Sunday.

He said he would take his injury "day by day."

Vick broke the ribs on the Eagles second offensive play Sunday when he was hammered by linebacker Daryl Washington. The Cardinals rushed four, but Washington was unblocked.

Vick completed a pass to Brent Celek but was slow to get up, but did not alert coaches to his discomfort. It's not clear when Vick spoke to team doctors, since neither coach Andy Reid nor Vick mentioned the injury in their post game press conferences.

"Maybe it was selfish to stay out there but it wasn’t affecting me. Just compounding hits started to tackle a toll on me. I’ve got to start to realize maybe I can’t do it all sometimes," Vick said.

He felt himself grimacing after several throws, he said.

"I just feel like I've been through worse. If it was a situation I had to come out I would have come out," Vick said.

Vick missed three games last year with cartilage damage in his ribs, but that injury was toward the top of his rib cage. This one is near the bottom on the left side.

Asked how the two injuries compare, Vick said, "It’s painful right now, it’s all I can say."

The season is done; why not allow Young and Kaf to show what they can do when blasted each and every play?????

Vick has a PHONY rib injury...it is just another excuse for Vick's paththic play.

Koons, do you really need to see more of Vince Young? Didnt he play enough this year to tell he sucks?
They put Vick in with broken ribs because Young is the back up. If Vick broke his leg, they would get him a Hovaround before putting Young back in.

No one has ever questioned Vick's toughness. Maybe if he had DJax and Maclin out there with him, and Nate Allen on the other side of the ball, they'd've managed to eek out a win against John Skelton and the lowly Cards.

Um, those "lowly Cards" have the same record as your Beagles fella. I think you have delusions of grandeur, just like the "Dream Team" so far this season. Fact is, the Beagles are mediocre at best. Not a top tier NFL team. Not even second or third tier.

I love my Eagles, but they are what their record says they are. I can say this with confidence, it's been the coaching that is losing the last few games.

VICK STINKS...now Vick has this phony broken rib injury....that's just a phony excuse for Vick's terrible play....hey, Tony Romo had two broken ribs plus a collapsed lung..and Romo went back into the game and won...and Romo never missed a game this season with those broken ribs.

You stink frank105, along with your phony excuses for your hate. Hey Tony Romo had broken ribs true, and played just like Vick.

I'll question Vick's toughness. Bruise on his non throwing hand puts him out? Romo can play with broken ribs but tough guy Vick can't? How bad is it when you are behind Romo in both skill and toughness?

Even though it wasn't his throwing hand he has to be able to hold the ball with the other hand, had the team in the lead when he left the field, just like he had them in the lead when he left in the Atlanta game. This team has issues but those issues involve the entire team, not just Vick.

What are you his PR Agent...he flipping stinks and he's clearly doing NOT DOING what he did last season when we foolishly handed him the keys to the franchise. He might not be our only problem, but he hasn't been a solution either and he has 100 million reasons to be one.

Agree with letting VY play so we can see what he can do - but don't forget we're stuck with Vick for years; what if Young plays well?

Not exactly. It's not the years but the amount that his contract is guaranteed for. The Eagles front office would be obligated to cut a check for roughly $40+ Million. I'm not exactly sure how that figures in the salary cap but base on that amount, can't imagine anything but an unfavorable outcome.

What all the players start to bail out with the littlest injuries now. You will not hear the term "warrior" the rest of the season. If a player so much gets a splinter in his finger at his locker, he is going to miss the game. Players are jumping ship now. They do not want to be a part of this circus. They arent going to risk injury for anything now that there is nothing to play for. See how many turf toes, quad stains, hang nails pop up the rest of the year.

For all those blaming the coaches... it isn't the coaches who are fumbling footballs, throwing red zone picks, and missing field goals. It isn't the coaches who are blowing coverages, whiffing on tackles, and dropping passes. It isn't the coaches that are missing blocking assignments, throwing the ball inaccurately, and giving up on plays. This is not a matter of poor preparation, planning, or coaching...it is a failure of execution. It is a failure of the players. If you want to blame anybody, blame them.
    Momus

Yeah, but it's the coaches who are supposed to make sure those things aren't happening. If the players see that adjustments are needed and the coaches aren't making those adjustments the players start to doubt their leadership. For example, Nnamde didn't come right out and say it, but he did say he played Larry one on one last year and did a good job on him and he was expecting to do the same yesterday. Sometimes you gotta put it on the coaches when after every game they say the same thing, they have to do a better job, and every game they fail to do a better job. I've supported the Eagles players every season, but I've been wanting a coaching change since Andy called 50 pass plays in the SB. A SB he was up 14 points and still passed the ball when we had Westbrook who had a monster season running the ball. 50 pass plays, who does that?

I've figured it out. Eagles give DeSean a decent contract. I'm not saying a ridiculous contract but something comparable to what Dallas gave Miles Austin. The Defense scale the scheme back, play one on one on the outside with Ashante and Nnamdie, well maybe a zone on Ashante's side, Hanson and DRC split the nickle back with both in on dime situations. Play a 4-3 with the d-line and line backers with the normal rotation. Finish the season out strong to build for next season. Run the ball more out of the 2 tight end sets now that Vick has hurt ribs. When it is time for Vick to throw, use the three step drops get the ball out quick on slants. The last thing they can afford to do is have Vick in 3rd and long situations. It would be nice if Ashante would switch sides so Nnamde can play the other teams top receiver, just to eliminate that option. I doubt if Ashante can or will do that but in that situation put DRC in. We could have put Ashante and DRC on the corners yesterday took out a LB and have Nnamdie play Larry all game even when Larry lined up in the slot and bring a safety down in run support. I did like that they played Jordan and took Foku out, they should have done that 3 games ago.

Why play Young? Get Kafka some seasoning to see if he has can be a QB in this league. The only reason to play Young is so Lurie's Gash can point out out at her parties how progressive they are.

I was against signing Vick from the get-go. He was never and never will be a great QB. He started with a bang early last year and then settled down by seasons end and this year to be what he is; a mediocre QB at best, who is fragile. This team is in turmoil and it's time to clean house by starting with Andy "Better Job" Reid and on down. This will be better for the Eagles in the long run. This season is done anyway. What, you think they may still win six more games and get into the playoffs? Then what?

Vick has acheived a level of sacred cow status. Seems like nothing is his fault at this point. He threw two interceptions the past two weeks in/around the red zone that killed drives. But, no one mentions them. I think what we're seeing is what we saw after a few years of him in Atlanta- the league figured him out.

Vy did save Jeff Fisher's job twice in Tennessee after starting 0-3 and 0-6 in releif of Kerry Collins running off 8 wins in a row....Give him a shot...we know what he can do and thats WIN! He has beaten the Giants twice in his career 2-0...How many wins does Kaftka have?

If Vick got same protection Drew Brees gets, he would have same results. Not his fault he is a little guy....If he was 6'2 he would be competing with Brady as top guy in league.

Does it even matter? Kolb was their best option at QB & he went to Arizona for an athletic guy who can't cover or tackle. Vick sucks!! I have been on here saying it ever since he arrived on the scene. He is 3-11 over his last 14 starts!!! There is no around that. The Eagles used to always beat him & the Falcons with McNabb!!! This team is at worse 6-3 if McNabb is that starter this year. McNabb won't go and win you a game... But McNabb never gave them away either!!

TNEaglesFan: "Ashante" and "Nnamdie?" Really? Just when you think you've heard from the lowest-down, illiterate form of an Eagles fan, someone pops up and surprises you. Congratulations, I thought the players on the team were the most illiterate in the City, but you have them beat. RE: Vick: He was and always will be known as a china doll. He's tiny and is not a QB. Just someone who can really run and throw the ball down the field once in a while. My grandmother would be more accurate. Reid's halfway house for troubled black men has failed. And Lurie and Co.'s wallets are a lot lighter for it.

Let Vick sit... I mean the season is over... no point. lets not go 8-8 and remain in the sweepstakes for Andrew Luck. I mean the colts could catch us, giving us the #1 pick... hopefully andy reids not here so we dont blow the pick like the last 13 years. the guy is worthless.

Momus, I couldn't agree with you more. The best game plan on the planet is worthless if the players aren't executing. Execution is the name of the game, and in the past two games now, this team, especially on offense, hasn't been executing. Only bright spot is "Shady" McCoy...when he gets the ball. Why on earth did he get so few touches yesterday?! Unbelieveable!

I wouldn't go out on that field with broken ribs and hope our miserable offensive line would hold! A couple more series of being pounded into the turf and Vick will have a puntured lung. Let the back ups take some hits for a while. Maybe they will learn to block better for a QB that stays still in the pocket. If they don't learn how to hold off a blitz soon we will run out of QB's

Poor Mike can't play, real shame! Shouldn't be too much of a leap to pass it over to the backup QB. Vince Young should have no problem over throwing receivers and running the QB draw. I f only the Giants could have Pete Carroll coach them this week, he was the only on the planet who couldn't figure out that Vince Young has play in his pocket, QB draw.

Always love to see posters who pull a hammy going from the couch to the fridge to get a beer whine about the lack of Vick's toughness. Like McNabb, his accuracy is a concern, but watch the Patriots offensive line in front of Brady and compare his protection with that of Vick. Eagles have two average lines right now, with wretched linebackers, average blocking tight ends and backs, weak safeties, poor tacklers, no big hitters, no leaders. Despite the off-season moves, this is not a very good team, period.

If Vick was being used correctly he would be off the charts. Vick is not a Tom Brady type QB. You have to design your offense around what he does best. Move the pocket get him out on the edge let him scan the field if nothing is there get the 5 yards set up for 2nd and five. Utilize your running game which brings the safeties down which opens up the deep routes for the speed receivers. Reid is ruining the Vick Experiment trying to turn it into the Reid Experiment. Good coaches adapt to the talent they have they don't force them to adapt to a style they aren't good at. Even Martz conceded and designed plays to move Cutler around instead of standing there like a statue. He finally realized Cutler is not Kurt Warner.
  • 0 like this / 0 don't   •   Posted 6:27 PM, 11/14/2011
Are you seriously still making the "he's not being used right." argument? After 9 seasons and 5 offensive coordinators you figure that someone would learn how to use him right. I mean a pro style offense in Atlanta wasn't right and then a West Coast Offense in Atlanta wasn't right and then a spread offense in Atlanta wasn't right and now this offense isn't right. This guy can't catch a break. No matter what offense he plays in or who coaches him he can't be more than a .500 qb who can only throw intermediate passes with any accuracy. What a shame. One day the right offense will come along and teach him how to read a defense or throw a screen pass or hit a wide open receiver with a deep ball. One day...

Best thing for the Iggs. Michael Vick is too injury prone...too small to play QB in the NFL. Signing him to that contract based on one year was another bonehead move by management. It seems there's always something going on with Mike Vick.

I think if Reid and company can develop Young he will outperform Vick, and win 2-3 games for the Birds. He had one game, coming in as a backup. Let him get all the reps this week and see what we have on game day. But I agree with Sheridan, this should be AR's last year.

There is absolutely no hope for this team. They inexplicably hitched their wagons to a career mediocre passer based on a 8 game flash in the pan. They have no young qb waiting in the wings. It's at least 3 years of futility followed by at least 2 more of rebuilding. See you in 2016.

There has to be some reason Vick stunk up the joint the way he did. Maybe he was injured, if so, SPEAK UP, you cost your team a game. Like heck it didn't affect your play, I beg to disagree. Get Young in there and see what he can do, can't get worse that this.

Has this man ever lasted a full season ?? We knew this going into signing him. He REFUSES to slide, holds onto the ball to long and gets hit alot...he's 31 and he's a QB we NEVER should have signed. Reid made his bed now his has to ride it out.

This season paints a clear picture that the train has come off the rails upstairs at the Nova Care Complex offices. I mean did anyone really not see this coming? The signing of Michael Vick, the resignation of Tom Heckert and Dick Jauron to go work in the armpit of the NFL Cleveland over working here with these lunatics was a sign of things to come. The hiring of Howie Roseman and Juan Castillo simply reeks of arrogance, desire from the top brass to have absolute power and do whatever they damn well feel like doing whenever they damn well feel like doing it. What do they care as they are rolling in money and have everything it can buy already? The only think left is feeding their giant ego's and exercising their power. I can say even the biggest idiots I've ever met wouldn't have made the signings, draft picks and personnel that they have. Absolute insanity and nothing changes if Reid gets fired. Reid, Banner and Brownnoseman have to go or it's ground hog day part 2.

Mike Vick is the Allen Iverson of the NFL, a spectacular side show and highlight reel that will never win any big games with meaning. A selfish ego driven player that showed you a flash of brilliance when he played within the framework of the system, practiced efficiently and listened to his coaches. Once he got that starting job back and got his big pay day, the new Mike Vick is the old Mike Vick. It's not coincidence that he's back to being a turnover machine that doesn't put the team winning first. You might be able to fool some of the people all the time, but you can't fool all of the people all of the time.

What's the matter tough guy. You were tough enough to throw dogs to to the ground until their backs were broken. Man up.. Take your lumps. Even Romo played with busted ribs.
