The DeSean Jackson contract issue
Bob Brookover
It was impossible not to notice Drew Rosenhaus' arrival this morning at St. Thomas Aquinas High School here in Fort Lauderdale.
He was the high-profile NFL agent engaged in a massive hug with Eagles wide receiver DeSean Jackson, a client he picked up in the middle of the 2009 season.
We all remember what happened the last time Rosenhaus became the agent for the Eagles' most talented receiver.
Is there any reason to believe things will be different with Jackson than they were with Terrell Owens?
Well, yes, but that doesn't mean there won't be any headaches along the way.
When asked about Jackson's contract situation by the Inquirer today, Rosenhaus said, "I don't want to say anything about DeSean's contract situation."
According to Comcast's Derrick Gunn, however, two sources have said that the agent is about to ask the Eagles to negotiatie an extension with the star receiver.
The Eagles, of course, love what Jackson has done in his two seasons with the team, but they really don't have to be in any hurry to sign him to a long-term extension. Jackson has two years remaining on his four-year, $3.46 million rookie contract.
A team source said no discussions have taken place between Rosenhaus and the team.
There are a lot of other contract issues that could be more vital for the Eagles, who have 14 players that are eligible to become either restricted or unrestricted free agents and they also have 11 others who are entering the final year of their deals.
You can read more about Jackson and the Eagles' contract issues in tomorrow's Inquirer.
Next Question boomer64- There's an issue? I guess if you make it an issue than it's somehow an issue. Now back to your regularly fabricated story.
Why assume that the Eagles don't want to extend Jackson's contract? It's their MO to lock good young players to long term deals. I suspect that BOTH sides want to agree on a new contract for Jackson. It will come down to going through the negotiating process and agreeing to terms. This is not anything like the situation with TO. With TO the Eagles want to give TO a new contract. Both sides did not want to negotiate. This time both sides DO want to negotiate. soulman386
If it isn't an issue now, you media guys won't rest until you make it one. The Truth Hurts
I'm really sick of hearing about TO everytime we read something about Rosenhaus. There are plenty of other Rosenhaus clients on the team. Get over the TO stuff. stoop57
Comment removed.- I agree with Truth. There is plenty of time to make this the story of the decade. And why wouldn't an agent ask about an extension for his client? This is news? Relax. RichieI
Wow, I agree 100% with every comment made so far. There's nothing to add to that...you guys covered it all. JimG- soulman - How could the Eagles possibly want to negotiate with a player who is under contract for the next 2 years, especially when they have no idea what's going to happen with the new Collective Bargaining Agreement in terms of salary cap and rules? erformc1

Comment removed.- Jackson does deserve more money; he's been a great player. Just wish he picked another agent. No more sit ups!
I'd be kinda surprised if they did anything right now. Get through next year, and then you have the player's 3 years to look over, and know what the new NFL will look like. I bet they get an extension done then. TBear
i dont think the NFL rules permit a new contract for him yet p
