THOMAS: EAGLES HAVEN'T SHOWN ANY INTEREST; SHAWN SPRINGS VISITING BIRDS

POSTED: Tuesday, March 3, 2009, 5:01 PM

Tra Thomas left Jacksonville without a contract, but he showed zero optimism today when asked if he still thought there was a chance he'd return to the Eagles next season.

"They haven't shown any interest in bringing me back, so as hard as it is I have to move forward," Thomas said via text message. "The Eagles have always been the team I wanted to play for, but now I have to go to the team that wants me."

Thomas, who returned to his South Jersey home to celebrate one of his son's birthdays tomorrow, didn't say if the Jaguars would be that team, but Jacksonville is the only place he has visited thus far. It's also roughly 100 miles from his boyhood home in Deland, Fla.

The Eagles also announced that veteran cornerback Shawn Springs has arrived in town for a visit with the team. Springs, 33, has played the last five seasons with the Washington Redskins, but was released by the team Saturday as part of a salary-cap purge. He had 12 interceptions in his five seasons with the Redskins.

Several team sources indicated that there's a decent chance Springs leaves Philadelphia without signing a deal.

the team is being dismantled. McNabb and Westbrook will be gone withing the next two years and talent level is going down because they are more interested in making a profit than winning the big game. Good time for Tra to make that move and go home. The way Dawkins, Tra and Runyon is being treated is shameful.

Ok......so if the Eagles don't sign Thomas, what is the alternate here? Are the Eagles planning on getting creative at all? I just saw a report that the Giants could be going after Braylon Edwards. Some sign of life from the front office would be nice.

I'm going out on a limb and saying that the Eagles are in somewhat of a "youth movement" phase right now. I realize that they went to the conf championship, but their decisions to not bring back Dawk, Buck, Tra, and most likely Runyan (plus LJ/Lito/Considine) lead me to believe that they are looking to reload before it's too late. I'm not saying that there are necessarily worthy players on the team right now to replace these guys, but it's probably the path they'll take. And I'm sure they'll remind us that they are the "Gold Standard"...."hey, we just went to the NFC Championship, everything is great!!!" I still think they are in good shape on the defensive side of the ball, with plenty of good young talent, but don't be surprised if McNabb gets traded (while he still has some value) on or around draft day. They certainly haven't provided the "weapons" that he's looking for, so why wouldn't this happen? They'll turn things over to Kolb and let him and D-Jack run the dink and dunk all day. After all, Kolb is entering the last year of his contract and they need to find out if he can play. They still need to spend some money to solidify the running game though, so they can let Kolb "manage" the offense and rely on the D to keep them in games. Just don't be surprised if this happens. It's the way the Gold Standard works....do just enough to stay competitive and keep the fans interested. They'll leave the whole parade thing to the Phillies. 2 million fans in Red has a much better aesthetic effect than midnight green anyhow.

The Eagles are engineering a youth movement. Everyone, lose your minds and act irrationally because they aren't bringing back 35-year-old veterans.

T Herramans will be the left tackle, much younger and obviously cheaper. Tra is old but is sad to see this team being taken apart without any regard for loyalty.

Hmm, Sheldon might be unhappy? The Eagles are talking to another free agent cornerback? Does this look like the Lito Sheppard fiasco all over again? Yes, it does!

The Eagles have some great players. McNabb is really good. How many TD passes does he have? Ambit Energy

The Phillies are the Gold Standard. The Eagles are second class citizens, but they get away with it because the so called fans in this town are more interested in singing "Fly, Eagles, Fly," instead of winning championships. Perhaps they should try, "Lose, Eagles, Lose, on the way to ignominy.........."

The Eagles are always trying to improve at every position. Dawkins, Thomas, Runyan are over the hill now and will just decline further. These guys know that the free agent market is weak and they are going for contracts that pay them far more than their performance will warrant over the next couple years. In my opinion, these guys should be retiring. If they can find another team to overpay them, good for them. These guys say that they want to play out their careers as Eagles. But they received fair offers from the Eagles and rejected them. I think they're frustrated that the Eagles didn't cause a bidding war for them so they could get even more from another team. As far as performance on the field goes, the Eagles haven't lost much. And the locker room presense? It's impact is overblown. Thomas is getting little interest despite the fact that there is great demand and lots of cap money for his position. Kolb? You're kidding. We have a Pro Bowl starter at the NFL level and you want a college player from a small college with no pro experience.
