THE RUNNING MAN?

POSTED: Monday, December 8, 2008, 12:16 PM

In a shocking development, Eagles coach Andy Reid was asked about running the football 41 times during Sunday's 20-14 win over the New York Giants.

"Some of it was dictated by the weather conditions," Reid said. "You weren't going to be very successful throwing the football in that weather."

In another shocking development, Daily News beat writer Les Bowen asked a smart-aleck question: "So should the fans who want the head coach to run more cheer for high winds every week?"

"I think the fans really want to win," Reid said. "They don't really care if we throw it or run it, they want to see Ws."

Brian Westbrook got the majority of the work at running back with a career-high 33 carries and Reid said he felt he came out feeling OK.

"I thought it was important for this game that he touch the ball," Reid said. "I thought the matchups were good. I thought it was important we get the run game going. There were a couple of times we tried to get him out of there and he wasn't up for that."

Reid said the key for Westbrook will be how his knee reacts to the pounding of Sunday.

"It didn't look like his ankle bothered him," Reid said. "Obviously this was a physical football and guys are sore, but we have an extra day to recover."

INJURY UPDATE. Reid said cornerback Asante Samuel suffered a sprained ankle against the Giants, but the coach did not think the injury was serious.

Wide receiver Kevin Curtis suffered a concussion in the game, but Reid did not rule out that he might be able to return to practice by Thursday. Tight end L.J. Smith suffered a bruised knee. Running back Correll Buckhalter, out the last two games with a sprained knee ligament, is expected to be back when the Eagles play the Cleveland Browns in a Monday night game.

OK, they won the last 2, but the next 3 will be tough and like before, they always get their hope up high and get a little laid back and again they will lose the next 3. Sorry to say that, but it reality.

watching a little bit of the press conference at noon make me wonder about Santa Reid. He was smiling and all jolly, like he can do miracle with this team. If they had the running games all season, they would be on the top now. That the problem with Eagles, they keep trying to do new things and it messed up everything. Still looking for a new coach and quarterback for 2009. Please, Jeff, get out of your office and start making better changes. Enough is Enough.

We are still a one man team and the man is not #5....although at this stage of his career he needs only to make some plays not all of them...AR likes big plays...MM likes to move the sticks....the latter rests the defense...puts less pressure on Jackson and Curtis..and actually makes the TE produce....Eckel or Buck need more carries

Yes, I predict that the Eagles WILL run the ball. They will not throw the ball 100% of the time from here on out. Book it.

Well what do you know? The defense finally showed up against a GOOD team and played a complete game. Keep this up and this team might be dangerous.

Geez Reid's stubborn. Admit it for crying out loud, you haven't been calling enough running plays.

Great game great win BUT why run Westbrook between tackles every running play. And you wonder why he is banged up? Yes one broke thru because of dumb defensive formation. How about some deception, quick tosses around end etc. Teams know when Eagles set up in tight formation they are going to run between tackles. That's one reason why those third and ones never made it.

I don't care if D-Mac and Brian are holding the Lombardi Trophy over in Tampa in February, Andy has proven he's done and he needs to go. His time has passed; I just hope the FO will get on the horn with Marty Schottenheimer or Bill Cower before they go somewhere else.

yeah well mr. st pete, you cannot run the ball when your backs are hurt or be successful when they are less than 90% or so
