THEY MIGHT NOT BE GIANTS

POSTED: Monday, December 29, 2008, 12:10 PM

Now that the Eagles have miraculously found their way into the playoffs, you're going to hear comparisons to last year's New York Giants, who won three straight road games as a wildcard team en route to an unlikely Super Bowl title.

In fact, Donovan McNabb made the reference after Sunday's rout of the Dallas Cowboys.

"The Giants got it done last year, there's no reason we can't do it now," the Eagles' quarterback said.

There's one major difference between this year's Eagles and last year's Giants as well as the 2005 Pittsburgh Steelers, who also were a wildcard team that won it all.

The Giants and Steelers had won all season on the road. The Giants, of course, reeled off 10 straight road victories to reach the Super Bowl after losing their season opener at Dallas. Even though Eli Manning and the Giants were wildly inconsistent during the regular season, they always seemed to find a way to win away from home.

The 2005 Steelers went 6-2 on the road before winning three straight road games to reach the Super Bowl as the AFC's sixth seed.

The 2008 Eagles went 3-4-1 on the road and if you look back, there was only one game all season where you could say they played well from start to finish. That, of course, was their win over the Giants at the Meadowlands. After a slow start, they played pretty well in beating a depleted Seattle team at Qwest Field, but they had to stage a frantic fourth-quarter rally to win at San Francisco.

To reach the Super Bowl, the Eagles have to win three straight games against playoff teams on the road. The odds of that happening are longer than them even being in these playoffs, but they at least have a chance.

Thanks Bob D-Over...Thanks a lot. I am really shocked that they would let a writer from Dallas publish an article on here...but thanks.

If the Eagles of the yesterday's game show up, I believe they have a very legitimate chance to win them all to the Super Bowl. If the Eagles against Washington show up, then that's going to be our season. Regardless of the playoff outcome, Andy Reid should be demoted (to just the head coach) or fired for anything short of the Super Bowl. He is lucky that the team is in a playoff.

If the Eagles play like they did yesterday, they have a very good chance of winning. I know most people commenting on the Eagles have hoped that Reid got fired, I don't think he's done a bad job at taking the team to the playoffs 7 out of 10 years. I doubt he's going anywhere. GO EAGLES!!!!

Odds of getting to the Superbowl much better than yesterday's events.

Eagles relish rolls like this!! Its when they are supposed to win or have all the hype is when they choke. It was written for them yesterday, all they needed to do was get in. Another parade in less then 6 months after not having one in 25 years or the day I graduated high school will be sweet!!

Our Birds have clearly been both amazing and pathetic at times this season. Looking at season-wide records is misleading given this team really came on strong at the end of the season minus the Redskins game. The Eagles and McNabb deserve our support not cynicism. The Phils gave us reason to believe again. Go Birds!

The birds had a 6% chance (according to Vegas odds) to make the playoffs going into yesterday. If you think that our road to the Super Bowl has lesser odds than that... you are smoking something fierce and you should lay off it. Here's our road to Tampa: 1. Tarvaris Jackson... he does not beat us 2. Cheddar Bob Giants... they are in disarray and have not proved to anybody that they can win without Cheddar Plaxico. They stumbled into the playoffs and will lose if we get to them. 3. Carolina/Atlanta... We cleaned up Atlanta before and if we end up having to face Carolina, I like our chances. They are undefeated at home... that means the trend is due to end... that's just how things go. There you go... that's how we get to Tampa. Trust me, IT'S NOT THAT SCARY. The road may not go through Philly... but its gonna take a detour for the next 3 weeks. GO BIRDS... Brookover is a transplant d-bag.

Hey nanandjoe. Why don't you spend some time on your own Cowgirl board and wallow in the shame you all should have for that predictable choke job your "team" just displayed to the world. Oh, that's right. You really don't have an active board in Dallas. You must be a friggin' masochist to want to come troll on our boards and get slapped around like your choke-artist Cowpunks did yesterday. Get a life yourself, jerkwad and try to shut ME up.

OK so the Eagles only have to beat Vikings, Giants, and Carolina and then get to face the Steelers in superbowl who they already beat? I would have taken this scheme in september and been pleased. Try to be positive and get behind the team! What a defense!

If Team Reid that crushed the cowboys yesterday shows up again next week in Minn and the rest of the way, there is no one that can stop them. REMEMBER though, Team Reid has been grossly inadequate with the play calling all season and is the main reason we had to hope (and recieved) a Xmas miracle to be where we are right now. I'm still not getting my hopes too high with AR at the helm because the team that showed up against the 'skins can easily rear its ugly head again next week in Minn. GO BIRDS!!

    1. They have won 4 of last 5 convincingly, including giving up only 10 points in DC. 2. The defense is on its best roll since Buddy Ryan. 3. The odds weren't any longer for the Phillies in September. 4. The last time the Phillies won the World Series, the Eagles went to the Super Bowl. 5. Defense wins championships.

DaveH - I saw that too, but unfortunately Moats just did not fit in with the Eagles offense. But he did help the birds out big time yesterday!

If this is Brian Dawkins last year as an Eagle, it must mean he's retiring. If he isn't Jeff Laurie better open up the check book to keep him. This guy is nothing but SUPERMAN. Future Hall of Famer.

The question of course is if the Eagles play like they did yesterday. Yesterday the game was over early and there was no pressure on McNabb or Reid. They are not good under pressure.

i have to believe that the eagles can make it to the superbowl.my reasoning is that as a lifelong steeler fans i recall the game early in the season when the eagles whipped us and whipped us good.now it seems to me that the eagle team we faced then is the same eagle team you see today.and if you eagle fans remember that game and then think about the way they played recently im sure you will have faith that they can do it.

The only way the Birds win is if they run as they did yesterday. The game was made lopsided by Dallas' utter self-destruction, but the difference between that game and the 'skins game was that Reid committed to the run. This Defense is really, really good. All they need is some time to rest on the sidelines and an offense that doesn't lose the game. In other words some ball control by the offense and no bone head plays by McNabb. As I say this, I become more pessimistic. I predict a victory next week and a loss the following week in a fairly close game.

The stars are aligned for Tampa, not only the Phillies connection but the Raiders pulled a minor miracle there yesterday too.

I don't think the Eagles road record means that much. They are playing well NOW, which is a much more significant.

Although they might have only "played well from start to finish" in one game, the Eagles were in all the road losses. They lost to Bears by a yard (24-20), the lost to the Cowboys 41-37, they only gave up 10 points to the Redskins and it was 10-7 when McNabb got benched in Baltimore. The score was 22-7 when the Eagles were at the 7-inch line when Reid called a pass play, which was returned 108 yards for a TD. A TD would have made it 22-14 with 7 minutes to go. And they won't face the Ravens unless it's in the Super Bowl. They've beaten the Giants at the Meadowlands. Regarding the Vikings at home: They beat Detroit 12-10, beat the Texans by 7, the Packers by one. None of those teams made the playoffs. The did beat Carolina early in the season and beat the Giants, who sat their starters. The Atlanta game meant something, and they lost that. The Eagles will beat the Vikings.

OK, I am astounded. I kept thinking, what team is this I am watching. Where had they been in the last 4-5 weeks? Is this an alternative universe where 9-6 teams actually go all the way? If they have to win on the road, at least now they have some big mo to do so. Who knows? Will they show up in Minn.? Or will they regress to Cinn., Skins, Bears? No one knows. Will injuries hurt them or help them? Celek is the TE and should be for the next 5-8 yrs. Was that Superman or some guy with injuries in every year running and during the Buck bit down hill ?? Who was that guy? Who were the OL's who looked old for 4 weeks and looked like all pros yesterday? It was an amazing day.
