Stunner: DeSean Jackson gets $51 million deal
Jeff McLane and Jonathan Tamari
The Eagles signed DeSean Jackson to a five-year, $51 million contract, the team announced today in a stunning move that locks up the talented but mercurial wide receiver and answers one of the team's biggest offseason questions.
"We are thrilled to be able to keep one of the NFL's top playmakers in Philadelphia," Andy Reid said in a news release. "DeSean is a game breaker, he has the speed and ability to score from anywhere on the field, and he has proven himself to be a big threat for our offense."
There's no doubt about that. The question was whether the Eagles would pay Jackson long-term after a down season that included a training camp hold out, a missed meeting and Jackson's being benched for poor play against the Patriots. The Eagles answered on Wednesday, taking another step to lock up home grown talent after previously extending the contracts of Todd Herremans and Trent Cole.
"Signing our own players was a big priority for us this offseason and DeSean was certainly high on our list," Reid said. "We are very excited about his future as an Eagle."
Jackson's deal is in between those recently signed by Vincent Jackson -- five years, $55.6 million -- and Pierre Garcon, five years, $42.5 million. The Eagles are giving Jackson roughly $15 million guaranteed, according to ProFootballTalk, less than the $20.5 million Washington promised to Garcon.
Jackson is scheduled to meet with reporters at noon Thursday.
Guarantee he won't be here for five years. How much of the contract is back loaded? cwdonald- Read the dang article! $15~ million is guaranteed. That's probably for the first 2 years (maybe 3). Everything else is the "funny money" that the agents love to throw out there. verve

Crazy money for a crazy kid who drops too many passes. I would rather have Vincent Jackson. ej610
Yeah!!! Now I can't wait to hear from all the football know-it-alls who like to frequent the comment section with their incessant idiotic drivel about how the Eagles make mistakes.
Jackson, for all you dopes who will say this was a bad move by the Eagles, is one of the best players in the league. This was a great move. jimqk
7-9 in 2012. jimmymack- Do you watch any team other than the Eagles? He's talented but has no character. Your one of those dopes who wants to keep Andy around.

If the eagles did not give him that deal, he would've received slightly more in free agency (if not franchised). I think D Jax gave a slight homwtown discount. Let's hope he can stay healthy and I am looking forward to hearing how much in guaranteed. Clt Philly Fan
