Steve Smith to IR

POSTED: Monday, December 12, 2011, 3:40 PM

The Eagles have placed wide receiver Steve Smith (knee) on their Injured Reserve list and signed defensive tackle Cedric Thornton off the practice squad to take his place on the roster.

Smith did not dress Sunday for the first time this season because he had a bone bruise on his knee, the same one he had microfracture knee surgery on last December.

His season, and likely his tenure with the Eagles, are now over.

Aside from filling in for the benched DeSean Jackson last month against Arizona, Smith saw very little playing time with the Eagles. Signed as a free agent for around $2.3 million, Smith wasn't expected to contribute much coming off surgery. But he produced almost no game-changing moments when he did play.

In fact, Smith's more memorable moments were when he did something wrong, like when he had a pass bounce off his hands and into a Giants defender's back in September, or when he inexplicable fell short of the first down marker after catching a pass against the Cardinals.

In all, Smith played in nine games, caught 11 passes for 124 yards and scored one touchdown for the Eagles.

Thornton was an undrafted free agent that originally made the Eagles' 53-man roster before the season started. But he was briefly cut and then added to the practice squad.

As someone pointed out earlier, Smith was signed as an insurance policy due to the Maclin situation back in the summer. Didn't need him, and didn't use him (much). No big surprise there. No need to go overboard criticizing the signing. Mob mentality on wanting Reid gone.

Pay me $2.3 million. I'm pretty sure I can match his numbers.

I don't get the absolute hate for Reid. I'm not saying that it's not time for him to go, but to actually hate him is completely ignorant. He has made this team relevant for over a decade. Some of the comments on these boards might make an outsider believe that all Eagles fans are under the age of 20. They never had to endure the lean years. If you want him gone, that's fine. If you disagree with some of his moves and want to intelligently criticize them, that's fine too. But to spew as much venom toward him as I see on these boards for EVERY single move that doesn't pan out shows not only a lack of football intelligence on the part of some fans but also shows that the unrealistic expectations set by some fans are so absurd that could never possibly be met by anyone.

So you don't disagree with the message, just the way it's delivered? It's called anger from folks who may not remember Kotite (who cares about the lean years) but can easily identify and recognize a messed-up front office and coach.
If you want to settle for relevant, you're a loser.

Stephen Tulloch or Steven Smith ... Stephen Tulloch or Steven Smith ... oh, hell, let's give $2M to the receiver coming off microfracture surgery. Who needs a decent middle linebacker? Not us, nope.

Great move by Reid to pick him up. Paid off in enormous dividends....NOT. Just another area where Reid is weak in....Draft, Free agents, time management, game planning, half time adjustments....the list is growing.

I remember when the Eagles signed him, the front office and coach thought they got over on the Giants. More wasted money from Jeffrey's wallet by Andy. Whens Lurie going to realize that although Reid made him a lot earlier in his tenure, he's been a negative to the bottom line lately.

I'll always believe, and will always believe, that pass that "bounced" off his hands was a deliberately contrived act done to appease his Giant buddies as a way of saying, "See, guys, I'm still really a Giant at heart." It just looked TOO easy to miss accidentally.

My hindsight must not be as good as everyone else's. I liked the signing at the time and I'd like it again if we could steal the most productive WR from our rival. Too bad the Giants turned out right about him and it quite rightly pissed off DeSean.

Hmmm. The Eagles sign a player coming off a major knee injury and he can't play and is a total bust....that's a first....

Smith will probably get a contract extension and a significant pay raise with this injury. If DeSean was smart he'd learn from Smith and get a knee injury soon.

I am disappointed in the performance of the majority of current Eagles. Smith didn't play any worse than some of the other receivers.

D Jax isn't going to signed for 2.3 mil a year, he will get 6 million+ by someone. He will expect 10+ but I don't know anyone will pay him that.

Just not a good Eagle signing unless the guy is injured. Arrogant Andy, just smarter than every other Coach out there! Except on gameday, of course!

$$ per catch for Smith? Should have just resigned DJ in the first place and saved the drama.

Remember that they got Steve Smith, it seemed, because they were unsure about Maclin's situation going into the season. He was basically just insurance.

An entire country could have been fed for what they gave Smith. I really hate the Eagles front office and their idiotic signings.

Yeah, I can't believe we wasted $10m on this guy... oh, I mean $20m... Oh wait, it says it right there in the article, $2.3m. I'm sure that was exactly what Desean was looking for, and the cheap Eagles just didn't want to pay it...

This was the most problematic signing of all. You could see this disaster coming a mile away. It made absolutely no sense to have the back-up, who is injured, making way more than the starter. Foolish move.

Well it is over and the Eagles wasted money on another injured player it isashame he didn't work out and stay healthy and was a bigger part of the offense. Now Ican only hope thsat we get a big wide out in thedraft and we get a few large run stopping LBS!

If my deceased grandpop was placed on IR, there would be more of an impact on the eagles. The eagles giving this dude 4 millions bucks is a crime, especially with d-jack making relatively peanuts.

and plaxico was practically begging the eagles to sign him.. we could have had plaxico instead of smith for the same price probably. plax has been having a decent year for the jets. he always had big games against us with the giants.. hopefully he doesnt continue that on sunday..
