Stay or Go: The results

POSTED: Tuesday, January 12, 2010, 5:39 PM

Today's "Stay or Go" poll elicited quite a response. More than 11,000 -- as of 4:30 p.m. -- voted on the interactive system set up by philly.com that allowed readers to cast a vote for which Eagles players (and coaches) should stay or go. I got the ball rolling in today's paper (which you can also find here), although I did not include coaches or management, as philly.com did. The Web site, however, narrowed the list down to an essential number of players that aren't as much of a slam dunk as, say, DeSean Jackson would be. Although there are some that garnered an overwhelming "Stay" vote.

I differed with the readers on several players, including Eldra Buckley, Max Jean-Gilles, Darren Howard, Jason Babin, Trevor Laws, Omar Gaither and Macho Harris. Here's the voting as of approximately 4:30 p.m. There were some curious choices.

Quarterback
Donovan McNabb: Stay, 3779 (32.6%); Go, 7798 (67.4%). Total votes = 11577.
Michael Vick: Stay, 3589 (33.9%); Go, 6990 (66.1%). Total votes = 10576.
Kevin Kolb: Stay, 9215 (88.8%); Go, 1163 (11.2%). Total votes = 10376.

Yes, McNabb received more "Go" votes than Vick. Amazing.

Running back
Brian Westbrook, RB:
 Stay, 3675 (36.1%); Go, 6520 (64.0%). Total votes = 10194.
Eldra Buckley: Stay, 4903 (62.2%); Go, 2978 (37.8%). Total votes = 7877.
Leonard Weaver: Stay, 8884 (98.3%); Go, 161 (1.8%). Total votes = 9040.

Philadelphia loves Weaver. It's official. I can't understand the fascination with Buckley, however.

Wide receiver
Jason Avant:
 Stay, 8040 (96.9%); Go, 260 (3.1%). Total votes = 8294.
Reggie Brown: Stay, 895 (11.0%); Go, 7277 (89.0%). Total votes = 8172.
Kevin Curtis: Stay, 2603 (33.9%); Go, 5080 (66.1%). Total votes = 7683.

Wherefore art thou, Brandon Gibson?

Offensive line
Nick Cole:
Stay, 5099 (81.6%); Go, 1149 (18.4%). Total votes = 6248.
King Dunlap: Stay, 1833 (37.5%); Go, 3061 (62.5%). Total votes = 4894.
Max Jean-Gilles: Stay, 3154 (62.8%); Go, 1868 (37.2%). Total votes = 5022.
Winston Justice: Stay, 4785 (92.4%); Go, 392 (7.6%). Total votes = 5177.
Jason Peters: Stay, 4863 (87.7%); Go, 684 (12.3%). Total votes = 5547.

A year ago, Justice might not have received ten percent of the vote to "Stay."

Defensive line
Victor Abiamiri: Stay, 2319 (59.2%); Go, 1596 (40.8%). Total votes = 3915.
Mike Patterson: Stay, 3738 (92.5%); Go, 302 (7.5%). Total votes = 4040.
Chris Clemons: Stay, 1445 (43.1%); Go, 1909 (56.9%). Total votes = 3354.
Antonio Dixon: Stay, 1691 (54.9%); Go, 1387 (45.1%). Total votes = 3078.
Darren Howard: Stay, 1654 (50.6%); Go, 1615 (49.4%). Total votes = 3269.
Jason Babin: Stay, 1881 (64.3%); Go, 1043 (35.7%). Total votes = 2924.
Trevor Laws: Stay, 830 (41.4%); Go, 1173 (58.6%). Total votes = 2003.

I guess the fans think the Eagles wasted their 2008 top draft pick on Laws.

Linebackers
Joe Mays:
Stay, 1369 (48.4%); Go, 1461 (51.6%). Total votes = 2830.
Jeremiah Trotter: Stay, 1009 (25.3%); Go, 2976 (74.7%). Total votes = 3985.
Moise Fokou: Stay, 2012 (74.8%); Go, 679 (25.2%). Total votes = 2691.
Omar Gaither: Stay, 1332 (62.4%); Go, 802 (37.6%). Total votes = 2134.

No one in this town will forget what the Axe Man contributed to this franchise, but they're not afraid to say goodbye.

Defensive backs
Ellis Hobbs:
Stay, 2008 (61.3%); Go, 1267 (38.7%). Total votes = 3275.
Quintin Mikell: Stay, 2233 (78.3%); Go, 620 (21.7%). Total votes = 2853.
Quintin Demps: Stay, 1111 (48.7%); Go, 1172 (51.3%). Total votes = 2283.
Macho Harris: Stay, 1311 (41.0%). Go, 1887 (59.0%). Total votes = 3198.

I can't understand the hate for Harris. He was thrown into a tough spot as a rookie.

Specialists
Sav Rocca:
Stay, 1398 (40.7%); Go, 2035 (59.3%). Total votes = 3433.

Punters are easy pickin's.

Coaches/Management
Andy Reid:
Stay, 2900 (46.5%); Go, 3330 (53.5%). Total votes = 6230.
Joe Banner: Stay, 1706 (37.9%); Go, 2792 (62.1%). Total votes = 4498.
Marty Mornhinweg: Stay, 1567 (30.0%); Go, 3655 (70.0%). Total votes = 5222.
Sean McDermott: Stay, 4530 (70.0%); Go, 1945 (30.0%). Total votes = 6475.

A few observations here: I'm surprised at Reid and Banner's "Go" votes. I thought there would be more for both. I'm shocked by the coordinators' numbers. Mornhinweg's offense set a franchise record for points, while McDermott's unit was among the worst of the Reid era.

Beat reporters
Jeff McLane:
Stay, 1 (0.1%); Go, 11576 (99.9%). Total votes = 11577.

Thanks, Mom, for the vote!

"This is where I think about the comment that if you listen to the fans you will end up sitting with the fans." Yeah, we saw that with the T.O. debacle. Still, I think these votes are all for a reason.

Eagles need an upgrade at numerous positions. LBs foremost (though Bradley and Witherspoon make us 2/3rds there) They need help at safety and a legitimate who can create pressure. Eagles tried to address the OL and it was a swing and a miss. That is on Andy. Need to try again. Andy says you need to win in the trenches We are losing in the trenches on both sides of the ball. Lastly it is time to move on with McNabb Toake this offense work you need to drop back 3 steps and deliver the ball. McNabb has NEVER been able to do that. He always tries tomake something happen and it falls apart. 3 step drop and throw it to a crossing receiver in stride and then see what happens with Macklin and Jackson! Andy gets 2 more years, then eat the last year and move on. The pieces are here, one last shot to deliver the goods.

The Eagles don't care what we think. As long as they keep raking in the dough, nothing will change. Jeffie needs to take a hit in the pocketbook before he will make a change. Tubby saves him two salaries, so enjoy moreof the same for atleast three more years!! Hey, pitchers and cathchers report in a little over a month!

I'm not really surprised by any of the player votes. I think it's time to close the books on the McNabb and Westbrook eras and trade McNabb for some defensive help and go with the youth on offense. I think you make Kolb your starter and Vick the backup but use him more as he will be back in football shape.

If there is no cllective bargaining agreement can anyone be cut with impunity by their teams? If so, are Reid and Banner counting on a larger free agent pool than we might ordinarily see? I understand the players are tied to teams longer, but can the teams avoid the typical salary cap hit they get when cutting a guy early in his contract? If so, who knows whom might be available?

It matters not who the OC is. This is AR's offense. It hasn't changed significantly since he was hired. Andy calls the plays too. Don't let the razzamatazz fool you. He has that card. He's calling the plays. He's not looking to see what Marty called. He knows what they are gonna call. He's just luckier some weeks than others. As long as the plays remain the same, as long as tendencies in play calling don't change. Good teams beat you. As I said yesterday this is a systemic problem that goes right to the top. I'm(Lurie) filling the stands, selling the jerseys(My brother bought a Vick jersey), and with a 40,000 long wait list to get season tickets. I don't have to worry. I'm(Lurie) making money. Me, I'm ordering a Bill Bergey jersey. The team had class then. There's one other thing this team is missing...Discipline.

This is VERY skewed simply because the only people that would vote on this site, are complete idiots. They probably also wanted us go send a 1st and a 3rd for Roy Williams, They probably also wanted us to give a huge free agent deal to Stallworth, and TJ Housh....these same people are the ones that in 2008 wanted J-Roll banished from the team since he said "This town is Fair Weather" to which he was spot on. And oh yeah, we won a Championship that year.....Yeah the same people that voted hear also want Cole Hamels out of town, and probably also wanted AI back for the sixers.....the only thing pole shows is that when the media says Philly fans are loyal/dedicated and most of all SMART....they are absolutely wrong!

It IS a good thing that the fans - esp. in Philly - don't run teams. I remember when Schmidt was new and striking out alot the boobirds, if they'd had the vote, would've had him gone. Nice to know that Laurie calls the shots and not the voters on this poll.

You know what the MOST TELLING part of this little poll is...and WHY the fans should NOT have a say in what ANY team does.....WINSTON JUSTICE has the HIGHEST VOTES for people to STAY!!!!!!! YES That is right folks....THE SAME PLAYER who after his FIRST ROOKIE START had a bad game.... and EVERYONE ....EVERY SINGLE PERSON IN THIS TOWN....Media/Fans alike said he was a HUGE BUST and should be CUT....thats right, CUT....from the Team!!! MY GOD! These fans make me understand why born and raised Philly folk end up rooting for Dallas. I would have more fun jabbing a rusty nail under my fingernails!!!!! Or better yet something even more painful....To Listen to Sal P.A.L. "Report"

i would be willing to let reid stay one more year, but reduce his GM role. I would also give the DC one more year, but i would trade 5 this offseason. If they don't produce next year, whole staff needs to go, and time to start a new era. just winning regular season games is not enough. Look at the raiders, they still sell out and have great fans, but at least they know they stink

McNabb to Chicago. They still don't have their QB. I like McNabb alot, but I do think it is time for him to move on. I think a change would be good for both McNabb and the Eagles.
