Source: Eagles won't trade quarterbacks before deadline

POSTED: Sunday, October 17, 2010, 11:01 PM

The Eagles will not trade quarterbacks Michael Vick or Kevin Kolb before Tuesday's NFL trade deadline, according to a team source.

Last month after he benched Kolb in favor Vick, Eagles coach Andy Reid could not definitively say that Kolb would not be dealt before the deadline. But a lot has changed since Reid made his infamous decision.

Vick injured his ribs against the Redskins in Game 4 and has not played since. Kolb, in his place, has played splendidly, especially in the last two games. He has guided the Eagles to two straight wins, including Sunday's 31-17 pasting of the Atlanta Falcons.

Reid hasn't made a decision on who will start next Sunday against the Tennessee Titans, but he reaffirmed his stance that Vick remained his starter. It took four questions following the game, however, to pin Reid down on the question.

"You take Michael Kolb and we go baby," Reid said kiddingly when first asked to name his starter.

No matter how Reid plays his hand, the quarterback controversy is unlikely to go away.

Vick, while not 100 percent, was listed as the third quarterback. But he was not out on the field before or during the game and arrived only 45 minutes prior to kickoff, according to the team. Reid said that he approved Vick's late arrival, saying that he hadn't planned on playing Vick anyway.

The coach said that Vick dressed and spent the game in the Eagles' locker room.

Jeff, is this the same source that told you Mcnabb to the Rams?

Oh, so YOU'RE the dope who asked Reid about the "normal practice" of some players arriving after others! Got it, thanks for clearing that up...

You guys think Reid could get a top 15 pick for Kolb?

Nor should they trade either QB. Despite the QB controversy, this is a GREAT problem for AR to have. We have a 2 headed-monster at the QB position.

    Trade Vick, keep the cannoli.

Very simply, no. You keep both KK and Vick, and you play Vick as the starter after the bye with KK playing next week vs TEN as the entire NFC is wide open and any team that gets hot can advance far into the playoffs this year. As well as KK has played, the defense has to game plan differently when Vick is the QB and as a result, the rest of the offense seems to have an easier time moving the ball and executing the offense.

    Kafka-esque problem to have.

I have a feeling that Reid is covering up for Vick being late. Just seems fishy. Kolb is the better long term choice. You can't trust Vick to stay out of trouble. I'm all for second chances, but I just don't think that Vick can keep his nose clean long term.

There is a high probability of a trade...Kolb has his money and Vick wants his. They will not give both QBs $12 million. Reid likes razzle dazzle and will want to keep Vick. The Front Office would much rather see Kolb as the face of the franchise, and his recent good play will add ammunition to the front office's case. Plus, Vick will be near 33 years old after the 2011 strike season, how long can he fight age and maintain his legs. Vick's value is high right now and that too is a factor. The Eagles will stick to their long thought out plan, disappoint Reid, and keep Kolb. Neither QB can function over the long haul with constant controversy and second guessing. Kolb cannot develop as long as Vick is here. And Vick can't get paid as long as Kolb is here.

McNabb was traded with the clear intention of going LONG TERM with Kolb. That hasn't changed and WON'T. Vick has been a nice story thus far, and Reid will do his little dance with them both through the season, but expect to see Kolb at the helm for a long time.

As long as Kolb is playing well, the Eagles can get a high draft choice for him (maybe even a 1st rounder) after the season. They won't get anything for Vick, since he won't be under contract. The Eagles will string this out as long as they can and make a decision on who stays and who goes only when they have to. So the rest of this year expect to see Andy play the one who is hottest on any given week.

Good job at making Vick into a better QB, and progress with Kolb. It will take time for Kafka. But an NFL team needs 3 QBs.

No interest from other teams in Vick before the season? Maybe a different story now.
