Six Eagles named to Pro Bowl; Brown not one of them
Bob Brookover
Six Eagles were named to the NFC Pro Bowl roster tonight, but cornerback Sheldon Brown was not one of them.
"It will kind of mess with you, but it's something you can't control," Brown said after being passed over despite having a career-high five interceptions, including one he returned for a touchdown. Brown also returned a fumble for a touchdown earlier this month against the New York Giants.
The six players selected to represent the Eagles in the Jan. 31 game in Miami were cornerback Asante Samuel, offensive tackle Jason Peters, wide receiver DeSean Jackson, defensive end Trent Cole, kicker David Akers and fullback Leonard Weaver.
Brown said he was named a second alternate to the NFC roster. The Eagles also had five other alternates: tight end Brent Celek (second alternate), quarterback Donovan McNabb (first alternate), safety Quintin Mikell (third alternate), guard Todd Herremans (fourth alternate) and defensive tackle Brodrick Bunkley (fourth alternate). Brown said this wasn't the first time he felt he deserved to be on the Pro Bowl roster.
"I've had a lot of good seasons," he said. "The year we had three defensive backs go (Brian Dawkins, Lito Sheppard and Michael Lewis) and I arguably had the best season, according to (Bill) Belichick. I always felt like the all-pro honor carries more weight because there is no fan voting there."
Samuel, who is tied for the NFL lead with nine interceptions, will be making his third straight Pro Bowl appearance and second with the Eagles. Peters, in his first season with the Eagles, will also be making his third straight Pro Bowl appearance.
Jackson, in just his second season, was voted to the Pro Bowl for the first time and made the NFC roster as both a wide receiver and a punt returner. He leads the NFL with a 16-yard average on punt returns.
Cole, whose 12 1/2 sacks rank fifth in the NFL, will be making his second Pro Bowl appearance, but the last time he went in 2008 he was added as an alternate.
Akers, who leads all NFL kicks with 32 field goals and 139 points, will be making his fourth Pro Bowl appearance, but his first since 2005, the year the Eagles went to the Super Bowl.
Weaver, meanwhile, is making his first Pro Bowl appearance in his fifth NFL season.
WEAVE!!!!!! Eagles need to sign him long term now! JaybirdNJ
I just saw the roster, and I'm probably most happy for Trent Cole. Jason Peters? Are left tackles that lousy int he NFC? He was mostly average at best, and was bad some weeks. I thought D-Jack would get in at either WR or KR (could've been Harvin, since he does kickoffs as well), but to get a starting nod and the KR spot is impressive! I'm happy for Weaver, and don't really know the FB candidates. I knew Samuel would make it, even if I don't care for his style of play. Celek? Good year, but even Tony Gonzalez was snubbed, and Davis and Whitten are a little better right now. Sheldon? Yes he played hurt, but I just don't see Samuel and Brown as two of the best three CB's in the NFC...I'm not that impressed w/ either. And while I think McNabb is an MVP candidate for his play and leadership, my consolation is that Brees, Favre and Rodgers are all having great years (and MVP candidates as well.) There are a lot of very good qbs in the NFC --those four, plus Warner, Romo....and even Eli isn't bad. But, McNabb is certainly as god as any. MG44
I absolutely can not believe Sheldon got screwed AGAIN!!!! and Jason "Penalty" Peters???! WTF??! KannonWired965

Remember though, with the new setup for the Pro Bowl being played the week before the Super Bowl this season, you really want to hope that NONE of the Eagles will have to play in the game since the new setup also excuses the players from the two teams involved from having their guys play. As for Sheldon Brown, the Pro Bowl voting always looks for guys who create turnovers, which is why Asante Samuel is normally selected. William Thomas was a solid player from 1991-1994, but was never considered by the league as a Pro Bowl-caliber player until 1995 when Ray Rhodes and Emmitt Thomas' defensive schemes turned Willie T into a turnover threat and got noticed by those who voted. And as for Leonard Weaver, he certainly deserves it. Can anybody here really name another fullback in the NFC that's had the impact he's made this year? With Mike Alstott long gone, Weaver could get named to many Pro Bowls after this since it's become an overlooked position by many teams in the league. Steve74
Brown deserves to be there!! His play has been spectacular! bossrjc
let's stop worrying about who made it and who didn't...NONE of the iggles are gonna be able to play anyways cuz they're gonna have a bigger game to play the next week yatpatel
maybe next year Sheldon should sit out instead of playing hurt and should stop hitting people instead of being strictly a cover corner like Asante did it worked for him. In all seriousness Sheldon was arguably better then Asante this year and he gets snubbed. Nick_from_Lansdowne

the pro bowl is a joke...brown is as close to a complete corner that you can get in the NFL. this guy plays hard and is a great hitter and gets paid "peanuts" by "industry standards." he should def. get a new contract next year. Legalhit53
The same people who voted for Peters are the same who will vote for Vick for the Block award. watsonmr- Don't sweat it Sheldon you can show all those Pro Bowlers your SUPER BOWL RING!!!!!!!! citysims
I would have liked to see Sheldon make it. He had a terrific year. I think Peters made it on rep. Weaver was a surprise but he played well. How about Dawk making it in the AFC. Was it deserved or on rep? I didn't see enough. Ballgame
It's an honor to be selected but I sincerely hope that every Eagle player so honored is barred playing in the game. Seconly, the pro bowl has always been a joke---the players took it as a free trip to Hawaii, but now that it's in the same site as the SB? Even more of a joke. I just hope that the Eagles can't play in the game. That would be the best pro bowl honor... Eilex826
