Sheldon should be seething
Bob Brookover
The Eagles and Donovan McNabb's agent Fletcher Smith are trying to rework the final two years of the quarterback's contract, according to a report from Comcast SportsNet's Derrick Gunn.
The essence of the report, which cites a league source, is that the team might guarantee McNabb's 2009 and 2010 salaries and perhaps even give him a bump in pay to elevate his annual average salary among NFL quarterbacks. McNabb is scheduled to make $9.2 million this season and $10 million next season. The second year of that deal is not guaranteed.
If this report is true, cornerback Sheldon Brown has every right to be seething in South Carolina right now, because he is underpaid by cornerback standards.
Brown has four years left on his deal as opposed to McNabb's two years, but the cornerback told me earlier this spring that he'd be willing to rework his deal rather than rip up the current contract. The veteran cornerback has $1.75 million escalator clauses in each of the final three seasons of his deal. A league source said those clauses are Pro Bowl incentives.
Brown has never made the Pro Bowl during his seven-year career, but he also has never missed a game. He said he'd be happy if the Eagles guaranteed the $5.25 million in incentives over the final three years of the deal.
If the Eagles are willing to guarantee McNabb $10 million or more, then they should be willing to talk to Brown about his contract, too.
Sheldon is a solid corner back but not great. If you asked to name 10 CB who are better it would be easy to do. Mc Nabb is a top 5 QB they are totally different comparisons. Mc Nabb has only 2 years remaining and if McNabb is unhappy, misses games or plays poorly we are done. If Sheldon plays poorly we have enough people to take his job. The most important players on the team are Westbrook and Mc Nabb. If they are playing well the Eagles are doing well. sportsgenius99
Bob: Do you get a percentage of any raise awarded to Sheldon Brown? By your logic, the Eagles should simply pay anyone more who may be "underpaid" and who asks for a raise regardless of the contract. Come on. Vituperator
Bob, Sheldon has no right to be upset if the Eagles guarantee McNab the 10m on the last year of the contract. These 2 contracts are so far apart in length and commitment. Sheldon would be happy if the Eagles guarantee the performance money of his contract? What incentive does he have to perform. If Sheldon had 2yrs left on his contract I am sure that the Eagles would guarantee the last year but he has 4yrs left. The union/government mentality relative to work is showing through on a number of these comments. Most people don't have these guarantees and are happy to work. Incentives are there to be EARNED not given. It's a business and the players just have to realize that from the start. Don't sign on the dotted line unless you plan to fulfill your commitment to the team. pete099
Bob, what a joke of a blog. Like what every other fan has said, we need McNabb at quarterback, Brown can go. How much do you get paid to write this stuff??? gulls3012
I find it funny that so many are calling McNabb a franchise QB now, but after his first bad series in a game people will be calling for Kolb. KevinRx
sheldon should be seeting - at himself or at his agent for letting him sign a deal that was apparently longer than what he wanted. we've been over this so many times. if he suffered a career-ending injury the day after he got the $7mil signing bonus, he wouldn't have looked to rework that deal and give it back... doggybag- mcnabb and brown are not comparable whatsoever. i normally back writers, but this article is ascinine. browns a troublemaker soliteryman
1. Football is a business, and when has a business ever been fair? 2. McNabb is essential to this team. Sheldon Brown is expendable. There is no sound argument for Brown getting a raise. FKD215
Can we stop with the "Sheldon Brown has never made a Pro Bowl" stuff? Lito Sheppard made 2 Pro Bowls, but who would you rather have? I'll take Brown easily. Consider Asante Samuel. I think Brown has proven himself to be as good as Samuel, and much, much more dependable. Brown doesn't get the interceptions that Samuel gets, but Brown doesn't get burnt trying to cut in front of the defender as much either. A CB as solid as Brown who never misses games is a rare rare thing. p-diddy
Bad article Bob. DE_Gene
Sheldon signed the contract he should play it out. He will be benched or at best compete against Hansen for nickel time. Macho Harris will be a stud and Jack Igenawou (sp?) has huge potential. "Crazyeyes" mentioned that Sheldon was a warrior, McNabb is the warrior of all current active quarterbacks in my opinion. Does anyone remember the game that he broke his leg in the 1st quarter and played the rest of the game, threw for 4 TD's I believe and came back early to play in the playoffs. How about when he played with the sports Hernia. Do you know how much pain he must have been in. bobf123
warhound - classic! sewellguy, change your name to sewerguy because what you're saying is pure garbage. you're the freakin' moron! phillyboy88
Comment removed.- Bottom line is that the Eagles are the employer, and as such may choose to pay whatever money they want to whatever employee they want. If they choose to rework/guarantee McNabb's contract (or anyone else's for that matter) , but not do the same for him then that is there perogative. If he doesn't like it he can quit. erformc1
