The Eagles and Donovan McNabb's agent Fletcher Smith are trying to rework the final two years of the quarterback's contract, according to a report from Comcast SportsNet's Derrick Gunn.
The essence of the report, which cites a league source, is that the team might guarantee McNabb's 2009 and 2010 salaries and perhaps even give him a bump in pay to elevate his annual average salary among NFL quarterbacks. McNabb is scheduled to make $9.2 million this season and $10 million next season. The second year of that deal is not guaranteed.
If this report is true, cornerback Sheldon Brown has every right to be seething in South Carolina right now, because he is underpaid by cornerback standards.
Brown has four years left on his deal as opposed to McNabb's two years, but the cornerback told me earlier this spring that he'd be willing to rework his deal rather than rip up the current contract. The veteran cornerback has $1.75 million escalator clauses in each of the final three seasons of his deal. A league source said those clauses are Pro Bowl incentives.
Brown has never made the Pro Bowl during his seven-year career, but he also has never missed a game. He said he'd be happy if the Eagles guaranteed the $5.25 million in incentives over the final three years of the deal.
If the Eagles are willing to guarantee McNabb $10 million or more, then they should be willing to talk to Brown about his contract, too.

The difference is Sheldon went public and McNabb didn't. You didn't hear a peep about this deal with McNabb till a month later. Sheldon should have keep it quiet and tried to work out a deal. He should have learned from Lito that approach doesn't work. jamericatv- Sheldon committed a cardinal sin, he aired it out in the media. Now the Eagles brass shall crush him with their collective wallet, like an ant under John Runyan's Timberlands. gho_matt
You can't compare a #2/3 CB with a franchise QB. Sheldon can seeth all he wants, but he needs to shut up, show up and actually make the pro bowl first. arb
Lonewolf - what's insulting is your intelligence level and that you still come on and here and blab like a fool. CB4
These guys write these articles just to start flame wars and stupid discussion. It's obvious that McNabb and Brown should not be mentioned in the same sentence regarding contract situations. Sweet_Toof
got to agree with the posts. sheldon is not a pro-bowl CB - he's average. he signed a contract that paid him cash up front, and he needs to honor that contract. bob seems to think he's sheldon's agent. bob - you work for the paper, you are not an agent. the only two people in america who would agree with your logic are drew is an idiot rosenhuas and scott is an idito boras. mets_collapse_is_funny_to_me- 2 years v 4 years: factor of 2. McNabb v Brown: factor of 10? 20? Who is Brown? Barely above average, though durable, db v HOF QB? Puhlease... do some thinking before making such a preposterous comparison. COskier
- You must be joking.
No matter how many articles you write , and no matter how many words are in each article, Bob Brookover, brmorgen 81 ( the first poster, 9:41 AM) said everything there is to say. I won't even add my own take because it all goes back to that one line, no matter how you slice it. drbob1
Sheldon is stupid, who goes for pro bowl incentives. I want to sell him the Commadore Barry. Call me Shelly baby will talk!!! Jack Hammer
You mean Sheldon is TEETHING, crying like a baby. As Harry would have said, " Your Outta Here ". The Marco Islander
