SI: Kolb's performance one of the top 20 stories of 2010 season

POSTED: Friday, July 16, 2010, 1:27 PM

Is Kevin Kolb ready for his big chance? Don Banks takes on the question at the center of the Eagles’ season, and foreseeable future, in a column up on SI.com today.

Banks lists Kolb’s first year at the helm as one of the 20 top issues to consider as fans look ahead to the 2010 NFL season.

He points to some strengths – Kolb’s accuracy and the time he’s had to learn – and potential pitfalls – saying the quarterback might benefit from a stronger running game and defense than the Eagles currently have. Banks concludes that “My sense is Kolb will reward (Reid) with a solid and occasionally spectacular first season on the job.”

In the same column, Banks takes a look at the Donovan McNabb trade and how it will reflect on Andy Reid and his former quarterback once the season ends. If either the Redskins or Eagles reach the playoffs and the other one falls short, he writes, the winner will be obvious. But Banks ultimately sees potential positives for both sides.

“To me, it's pretty clear that the Redskins are significantly improved with McNabb under center, but I'm equally certain that Reid won't entirely lose his coaching touch with No. 5 now wearing burgundy and gold,” he writes.

If Banks' forecast for Kolb holds up, will fans be satisfied? Would it justify handing Kolb the reins?

And, after all the debate about McNabb, do you think the deal actually ends up being good for both parties? Have at it . . .

I'd be ecstatic if that's how it played out! A "solid" performance even without the "spectacular" is all we can ask. Unfortunately, I think Kolb will have more a learning curve...solid performances from Kolb this year will be gifts rather than the norm.

prediction: kolb will have an above average year this year (and the Eagles D will be below average) but next year Kolb will be a pro bowler and our D will be solidified and hopefully we'll have a long run in the playoffs. if we dont make the playoffs this year i think it will be more bc of our Defense than Kolb.

McNabb will flourish in Washington while Kolb flops. Desean or Maclin will get injured. No McNabb, No J.Johnson, no Dawkins, no Sheldon, no Westbrook, a less than 100% Bradley = The Eagles lose 13 or more games and finish dead last. All you McNabb haters will look like complete and utter fools as you should, since that is what you are.

Above average? That's a huge understatement. Kevin "Mr. Clutch" Kolb aka The Killer of Wild Boar With His Hands and a Bowie Knife will easily take this team to the promised land. Kolb will also land between 11-20 teammates in the Pro Bowl this season. Kevin Kolb....my man. Wolf Out!

I was having tea and flatbread with some afghans on these frontlines and even they shook their heads when I told them about all of the weapons they McNabb failed to utilize properly. Maybe Reid would have gotten better use out of McNabb if he would have had McNabb push the blocking sled instead of Hegamin. Oh well at least we have a real All-American QB as the starter for the Eagles in Kevin "Mr. Clutch" Kolb. They should print out T-Shirts with 04-04-10 "The Day The Eagles Franchise Revived Itself With a Real All-American And Natural Born Leader!! Kevin "Mr. Clutch" Kolb your time has come. Kevin Kolb my man......Wolf Out!

Eagles secondary is a MAJOR weakness right now (I'm not sure what they're thinking, but I see them getting burned repeatedly throughout the season). And there will definitely be some bumps along the way with this transition to Kolb and the youthful offense. I'd be surprised if the Eagles could go 8-8 this year.

Kolb has proven very little so far, except to some lunatics here on this forum. There is little realistic reason to expect a stellar season from Kolb or the team in general, but the trult fanatic will make their case regardless, and even when the team finishes 6-10, some of these people will rationalize that they were better than they performed. Over his career, McNabb won a lot more games in the 4th quarter than he lost and his presence will be missed.

Wolf ... you are too funny, stay safe! I agree with BJG83 about the secondary. I think it's gonna get ugly early and often ... then just get worse. Thus Kolb will be throwing 50 times/game (like McNabb) because the defense can't stop anybody.

McNabb will have the same numbers as Jason Campbell. Big strong armed qbs that cant read defenses, rely on the long ball and hold the ball too long. McNabb will take ill advised sacks, throw inaccurately on first and third downs. He wont turn it over, but wont light it up... an 82 qb rating.. same as Campbell. The Oline will be blamed for the pressure and the wr for not getting separation... KOLB could be Hoying 2.0... who knows, but McNabb has the same skill set without his legs that Campbell has.

Wolf! Always enjoy your posts; you crack me up, I love your attitude towards Kolb, I too like the attitude he has and the leadership he seems to exude, I hope he can stay healthy with that line this year and give us Eagle fans hope for the next 10 years. I am super concerned about the defense and the o-line, even though he hasn't played much, I am not worried about Kolb, I think he will be fine.

a change at starting qb from a pro bowler to an unknown on perennial playoff team is a top 20 story in the nfl. Ya think. I would say it is top 5 across the country. I live in Iowa and the talk about it on local sports radio. The only story close to this is what will Bradford do in St Louis. Favre isn't a story cause we know how that book will end this season.

McNabb is going to have to run for his life this year, that OL in WASH is 1 gigantic question mark. As for our QB, I think he will be far more impressive than most here are forecasting. He really couldn't ask for a better situation to walk into. Our OL could make it a lot harder for him if they do not gel and perform MUCH BETTER than last year, but I think they will also be more impressive than most here are forecasting, even Stacy Andrews.

Agrodave: McNabb never won a SuperBowl so what? Does that mean he didn't hate to lose. Its sounds to me like you're saying he like to lose. OOOOOK...Anyway, here's a list of quarterback that haven't won SuperBowl and you tell me if they should have been run out of town the way Philly ran McNabb out: Current: Phllip Rivers, Aaron Rodgers, Matt Schaub, Tony Romo, Joe Flacco, Matt Ryan Retired: Warren Moon, Dan Marino, Jim Kelly, Fran Tarkenton, Dan Fouts, Boomer Esiason, Dave Krieg, Ken Anderson, Jim Everett, John Hadl, George Blanda, Sonny Jurgenson,

All of the facts will come to light by game 16. Until then it's all a bunch of bunk. Ya'll can make all of the prediction on either side of the fence....but only time will tell and nobody on this blog, including the "experts" (that propably never played the game)will get it right....there is going to be a lucky guess...and that's all it will be. One thing rings true though all of this...THE COWGIRLS SUCK!

doctor E. If Donovan was so good, why did they get so little for him in the trade? At least 8 quarterbacks would have gotten more and four would have gotten a lot more.

maybe it will just make for better football not to know. After all, mcNabb and Reid were so predictable, the cowgirls killed them 2 weeks in a row and thought they were headed for a superbowl. Kolb brings something different to the game and that is a refreshing dose of unpredictable play. No one knows including the cowgirl defense. With fast receivers who actually can make real yards after the catch, a west coast QB like Kolb could be really interesting. I think he is a round peg fitting into a round hole in this system. The bigger question really is the offensive line and the defense in the middle. With Kolb's quick release (a major intangible compared to McNabb's marathon waits in the pocket), the line has a chance to put their game together.

The same people who are attacking the "McNabb haters" are the biggest "Kolb haters" already. All this even before the guy has had at least a half of a season to demonstrate his abilities or lack of. #5 is gone, it was time to move on. Even if #5 won the SB game it was still time to move on. The birds are rebuilding and they better focus on the defense. My fear is Jimmy Johnson is going to be missed the most the next few years rather then #5.
