Roseman officially named GM

The Eagles made it official today: Howie Roseman is the team's next general manager.

The 34-year-old Roseman, who has acted as the team's vice president of player personnel for the last two years, replaces Tom Heckert. Heckert took the GM job at Cleveland two weeks ago. Although his title suggests it, Roseman will not have the final say on personnel matters. Head coach Andy Reid is the de facto GM.

Roseman doesn't have a formal background in football, but he has been with the organization for 11 years, moving over from the business side several years ago. He has been credited with spotting several players that are now on the team, including defensive end Juqua Parker. He has already developed a reputation around the league for doing his homework. According to some within the organization, he watches as much film as anyone.

“He knows his stuff," an NFL GM said earlier this week. "It’s not like the Eagles are promoting some guy off the street. He’s become more involved in personnel matters and looks to have a keen eye for talent.”

Roseman was at the Senior Bowl earlier this week scouting players, along with his staff and most of Reid's coaching staff. He declined to address the reports about his upcoming promotion. Roseman, a lawyer by trade, will meet with the media today at 1:30 pm at the NovaCare Complex. It will essentially be his introduction to the Eagles' fan base.

Here's the release from the team:

Now in his 11th year in Philadelphia, Roseman spent the last two seasons as the team’s vice president of player personnel. As the team’s general manager, he will maintain a very similar role, working closely with head coach Andy Reid in all aspects of the player personnel department. He will manage the college and pro scouting staffs, organize draft meetings and the draft board, scout the top collegiate players around the country and assist in formulating the team’s roster throughout the year.

The 34-year-old Roseman originally joined the Eagles in 2000 as salary cap/staff counsel. He was elevated to director of football administration in 2003 and to vice president of football administration in 2006. In this role, Roseman worked in the personnel department evaluating players around the NFL and for the draft. He also represented the team to the NFL on contract, salary cap, and player personnel matters.

Roseman earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Florida before earning a JD degree from Fordham Law School. Howie and his wife, Mindy, reside in Philadelphia with their son, Jake, and their daughter, Emma.
