Roseman: Eagles will add QB before minicamp

POSTED: Thursday, April 15, 2010, 2:09 PM

General manager Howie Roseman said that the Eagles will add another quarterback to their roster before minicamp starts on April 30.

Roseman met with a roomful of reporters today to preview next week's draft for the Eagles. He was asked if the draft had any bearing on whether the team would consider bringing veteran Jeff Garcia back as the third quarterback behind starter Kevin Kolb and backup Michael Vick.

"Jeff's agents have some players on our team and obviously in those conversation his name has come up," Roseman said. "But we also think that there are some good opportunities to get a third quarterback, whether it's a young guy or other guys that are available. We'll look at all those options as we go forward here. We will obviously add a quarterback before our first minicamp."

The Eagles were entertaining offers for all of their quarterbacks a few weeks ago, trading Donovan McNabb to the Redskins a week ago. But there hasn't been much of a market for Vick, even though there are still teams in need of a starter and he has said that he wants to go back to being a starter.

"We anticipate Michael Vick being here," Roseman said.

Asked if the Eagles would field offers for the quarterback, Roseman said, "We'll field offers for anything. We're open to any situation and any circumstance for multiple players on our team. You have to be open to that."

Roseman, who took a few dings a few weeks ago from Yahoo columnist Mike Silver and from an unnamed general manager about his negotiating tactics, was asked if the Eagles received the draft compensation they hoped to get in return for McNabb. The Eagles got Washington's No. 37 overall pick in this year's draft and a conditional fourth-round pick in next year's.

"We didn't really have expectations," Roseman said. "We just felt like we were going to sit and listen. ... As this process went along, I think this was a good result for all of us. I think it was a good result for the Washington Redskins. I think it was a good result for the Philadelphia Eagles."

In other news, Max Jean-Gilles and the Eagles agreed to a one-year contract after the guard signed his tender today. Sav Rocca is the team's only remaining restricted free agent to have not inked his tender. The punter is in his native Australia, according to the team, and will sign the tender when he returns to Philadelphia.

The Eagles only anticipate Vick being there because no one wants him.

Eagles will get a 4th round compensatory pick for vick next year anyway. If berry falls we will trade Vick, our 1st and a late pick to move up and grab berry.

The key word is anticipate, which means he's not sure.

No way anyone should give all of that up for Berry. The draft is a crapshoot. Mays could wind up being exactly what the Eagles need...a bigtime hitter in running situtions and a guy who can cover good tight ends when the other team loads up on receivers.

Kellen Clemens could be had from the Jets for a 4/5th round pick.

Paul SoTX, the knock on Mays is that he can't cover, and would probably be a better WILL in the league.

Eric Berry is an elite talent, and would be exactly what the Eagles need. Would trade a 1st, Vick and a late pick to get Berry in a second..

Should I call Kansas City and tell them you guys are willing to offer a QB no one wants AND a 3rd day pick to move up 19 spots in the first round? I'm sure they make that move in a heatbeat.

yes i keep hearing people say take Mays! he cant COVER in four years as a starter at USC he had 2 ints really four years at one of the top schools as a starter only two picks not good.and has horrible hips for a safety he would be better suited as an lb.....eric berry is the best safety to come out in a longgg time and would be a perfect fit in this defense.....trading our first...vick for a top pick would be great but no one at the top wants vick soo now i just hope the eagles dont fall for Mays physical attributes and pick him bc i see another Mamulaesque performer

Don't know what a mope is, but Kellen Clemens isn't worth two squirts of urine. No thanks.

Phillyfan94, My son graduates 'SC in May, and I've been to many Trojan games and watched the rest on the tube. Taylor Mays is as good as they come. He had a down year last year due to injuries, but I don't know where you get your information. None of what you say is remotely correct. I'd suggest you watch 30 to 40 of his game tapes as the scouts will do. Where do you folks get your information? To compare him to Mike Mamula is about as ignorant as it gets. There is no basis for comparison. How many USC games have you actually watched in the past 4 seasons?

He won't be there, and given their philosophy they'd never take him but I really like that McClain kid from Alabama. He would give our LB unit a huge boost.

dragiin- glad somebody has a little sense here! Like vick and a 6th are some huge value! LMAO.. As for if we got enough for McBlabb- #37 this year and a 4 next year is actually much better than a late 1 this year. All indication is this is the final year of insane bonuses to every yahoo drafted in round one. This is a very deep draft so 37 is like a late one without the stupid contract. Overall a good haul for a guy who will be 34 during the next season.

Stop with the compensatory BS, we got only a couple 7th rounders for Dawkins and Buckhalter. A #3 for next year will do it on draft day for Vick.

Eric Berry or Earl Thomas is the pick. I like Mays but don't think they will pick him.

If there were any possibility of them getting Berry outside of a top 5 pick, I think they'd do it.

As a Tennessee Volunteer fan I really enjoyed Eric Berry and would love to see him in green. People forget Eric Berry played safety but started his career at Ut at corner. He would be a great fit for the eagles in their system, we need to fill the fiery hole left by Dawkins.

If the Steelers want to trade Ben Roethlisberger for a draft choice or two, the Eagles should pick him up. That would be the QB upgrade we've been waiting for.

I hope they move Vick. I have a feeling he is going to become more and more of a distraction. I could see, halfway through the season, he starts talking, like TO, about how he should be the starter and whatnot. He won't be happy as a backup, especially without a chance to compete for the starting job.

Why would you trade a still young and former pro powler (Vick) after trading a pro bowler (McNabb)? With a young unproven QB (KK), who will be protected by an OL with huge questions marks, that won't be wise, IMO. At least Vick has mobility. If something happens to slow-footed Kolb, who's going to be the backup QB? Garcia, who lost the last 4 games (including the last one at home) two years ago after having the second best record in the NFC and missed the playoffs? Unless they get another proven QB, they should keep Vick as an insurance policy with the tough schedule that awaits the Eagles.

Vick, Why all the fuss? He will be traded before the season begins. There will be NO SUPERBOWL this year or next year...the Eagles know this!!! They are REBUILDING, they are now aiming their player moves to 2012 and beyond...Vick does not fit that plan. They know it will take 2-3 years to get all of the young new draftees functioning. NOTHING IS ABOUT THIS YEAR OR NEXT YEAR...WINS AND LOSSES ARE IRRELEVANT TO THE EAGLES FOR NEXT TWO YEARS.

Lets trade Vick, Sav Rocca, and our third round next year to St. Louis and take Sam Bradford.

Bring back a Detmer! The Eagles will need Garcia and another QB. How do you have camp with all the WR and DB with 3 QB's. Gotta have at least 4 for the preseason.

Eagles will either cut or trade Vick, sign Garcia and pick a QB in the draft. The top pick will be for an OL, with my preference being Pouncey which fixes two OL positions by moving Cole back to RG. It won't do to let KK get KKilled and AR knows it. Having KK fail will make AR look foolish for trading DM. He won't allow that to happen. No more WRs are needed [never thought I'd say that after 11 years of Freddie Michells] and even RB position is adequate. D is the main concern after the OL is fixed.

I really don't understand why all the talk about who is going to be traded or drafted, the eagles are going to be losers either way it goes, and before the season is over Kevin Kolb will show you just how much of a loser you really are.

tpizza I pretty much agree with your assessment of what could, might happen. They actually could use another receiver, although they have other needs, maybe a late rounder with kick return skills, as they are short a few with Brown and Curtis now gone.

never cared for vick, hopefully he won't be the starter by week 5, mcnabb's ability to shed defenders and avoid sacks won't be disguising the weak ol or weak playcalling. not looking forward to this season.

watsonmr, with the number of picks they have a WR wouldn't hurt. Let me rephrase that and say that WR is not a primary need anymore so I'd rather see them concentrate on the D after they pick Pouncey. I'm convinced that is the right move and no way AR is going to come away looking foolish after trading McNabb. No way at all. If KK fails, Reid fails.

Don't the Eagles only get a pick for Vick if somebody signs him? I would be surprised if anyone did- but I was surprised the Eagles signed him in the first place.

AR will draft linemen for the offense and a linemen for the defense and a DB and a linebacker. The draft will provide a project at QB and some interesting 'no name' free agents and Mr. Roseman 'finds''''johnnyu

Think the Eagles might appreciate the talents of Jimmy " I look like Stewie Griffin" Clausen. After all, he did have a pro system at Notre Dame. Better draft Golden Tate while you at it.

The National Football Post now has John Skelton, QB Fordham in a 4 way tie for 3rd best QB in the draft. I'm starting to doubt he'll be there in the 4th round. Look at the grades in the right hand column. Howie Roseman is a Fordham guy, do you think that means anything? http://www.nationalfootballpost.com/front-office-total-access-projections.html
