Rolle, Allen to start

POSTED: Wednesday, September 28, 2011, 12:34 PM
Brian Rolle has replace Casey Matthews at weakside linebacker for Sunday. (Clem Murray/Staff Photographer)

Changes have arrived on defense.

Brian Rolle said he has been elevated to first team weak side linebacker and Nate Allen will be starting at safety in place of Kurt Coleman. Linebacker and safety have been glaring weaknesses early in the season.

Rolle, a sixth round pick, has looked more instinctive and aggressive than Casey Matthews, the fourth round selection he'll replace in the starting line up. He is short, however, generously five-foot-10.

Rolle said he will continue to play in some nickel packages as well. Coming in as a sixth round pick who began with limited playing time, Rolle said his goal was to make sure that when he did get on the field, his name was called out.

"Every time you see me on the field you hear my name," Rolle said he told his father this week. "My coaches must have seen that light and felt that I need to be on the field more."

Rolle, a speedy but short linebacker, said he believes he is actually better against the run than he is against the pass. But he said he hopes he gets a chance to take on tight end Vernon Davis this weekend.

"It’s going to be a lot of fun get out there, play in space and hopefully get matched up with Vernon Davis," Rolle said. "Everybody has their weakness. You can be fast, but being fast isn’t everything, it’s all about technique in this league as well."

Rolle has worked at weakside linbacker since training camp, unlike Matthews, who was in the middle until last Wednesday, and showed Sunday he still has learning to do.

Rolle said he wasn't concerned about being a sixth round pick or starting low on the Eagles depth chart.

"I just thought about working hard and letting that pay off and it has," he said.

Allen replaced Coleman Sunday after Coleman missed a tackle, leading to a 74-yard touchdown. He entered training camp as a starter, but was hampered in his recovery from a torn patellar tendon and lost his job to Jarrad Page.

More soon.

wait, i thought instincts were matthew's strong point!?! he's not big, he's not fast, i swear the eagles liked him because he was instinctive...hmmm, go figure. sounds a lot like drafting a 26 year old lineman because he's nfl-ready.

They need to bench Foku and Page while they are at it. I would argue Coleman is better than Page, even with that missed tackle.

Once again, the "smarter than anybody else" braintrust has to eat it. Why don't they ever just focus on drafting the obviously good players instead of trying to uncover that diamond in the rough that happens along once every 100 years?

Maybe they should've drafted Earl Thomas with the 13th pick last year instead of Brandon Graham.

The Rolle move I like.. Regarding Nate Allen, I am super down on him.. His tackling is beyond bad. He got run over a few times last week after coming in to replace Coleman.. Coleman usually is a reliable tackler.. Last week he had a bad game and no one can dispute that. From what I've seen, Allen is a major liability and has certainly not recovered from his last years injury well enough to be in there.

LOL, cant win with late round linebackers? Thats what they said about James Harrison on the Steelers - who was not big enough, not fast enough, not instinctive enough. He was a FA that bounced around. Before you start saying players who make it to the NFL are no talent wait and see. You are not in the NFL now are you.

just the fact that they are scrambling this badly 4 weeks into the season to find SOMETHING that works at LB should tell you everything you need to know...rookies being swapped out, switching positions...can you imagine what happens if one or more of these guys gets hurt? they GROSSLY underestimated the LB position AGAIN and it will cost this team any chance of getting deep into the playoffs this year...

Exactly, you have to wonder what they were looking at in training camp...they also were very quiet when teams made final cuts...They desperately need upgrade at safety and there probably is an answer on someone's practice squad...But the fact that 2 #2 draft picks are uncapable of excelling magnifies the lack of talent thru poor drafting.

LMAO...Casey Matthews from MLB to WILL to Bench. It only took them almost three months to realize he couldn't play yet at this level. The Smarter Than All group comes up small again. The Reid, Castillo, and Matthews apologists have just gone underground and will not be heard from until further notice.

Mark1npt - There's nothing wrong with their 'diamond in the rough approach' in the later rounds - we actually pretty consistently get decent starters from rounds 4-7. What would be nice is if we consistently got starters or even (dare I say) stars from rounds 1-3. I agree - they need to get over themselves and just draft the obvious talent. They may not end up feeling like they outsmarted anybody, but at least we'd have a defense that tackles and a line that blocks...

Well, Rolle would have been a 2nd rounder if he had more height. He's got a chip on his shoulder and that's the kind of guy we need. If he can be half the player London Fletcher has been I'll take it. Thank God, the Matthews saga is over.

We can keep switching players around, but I doubt it makes a difference unless we bench the defensive coordinator.

I guess it takes more than intensity and energy to be a coordinator in the NFL after all.

Come one everybody! Take a ride on Andy Reid's neverending linebacker carousel! And while all this is going on, that Samoan linebacker Tatopu is just sitting there as a free agent. Way to go Eagles, this makes a lot of sense.

Wow! What's that noise I hear? Could it be fans jumping off the bandwagon once AGAIN? Everyone knew, regardless of what the front office said that this was a transition year for the team and all the hype about SB win is just that. The truth is that if this team can get it together enough to make the playoffs it will be quite an accomplishment. New coaches at key positions, new players at key positions, new offensive and defensive schemes. It all adds up to taking time to jell. This is no more than I expected at this point in the season. If they are still looking like this a month from now, then I will be disappointed. The sky is not falling, guys!

Reid, being the fat kid that's always 20 steps behind everyone else, took him forever to notice that Matthews looked more like one of the zombies from Night of the Living Dead than a LBer.

HA HA for anyone here who thinks Brian Rolle (5'9" 225 lbs) is going to make any difference in this linebacking core newsflash: You're out of your mind. All I hear about Casey Matthews is that he's not playing "instinctually" AND he's "TOO SMALL". Oh ok great! Right now in the Nickel package Brian Rolle comes in, meaning it's usually third and long, and in those small percentage of plays he's playing "more instinctually" than Matthews...that's like saying "60% of the time, it works everytime" (thank you Brian Fantana from Anchorman). Wake up people. These linebackers are 2nd rate at best and there's no simple "Rolle for Matthews" change that is going to all of a sudden bottle up the run. Oh and I saw something about Earl Thomas...don't even get started on that.Brandon Graham. Yeah what a player he is

Well, it looks like he can cover the wheel route effectively. Here's a newsflash for you. Brian Rolle was one of the most productive LB's ever to play at OSU and was first team all big ten in 2010. You can scoff at that, but it proves that he's not some project, he's achieved something, he's made plays and has demanded respect from opposing coaches. He's undersized, but he's strong and fast. He's a football player, and he plays with instincts and heart. He's not going to be a one man wrecking crew, but he'll be much better than Matthews. You just need a disruptive force back there, not someone who's standing around waiting to get blocked.

The Matthews situation is an interesting one.....because he's Clay Matthews brother there is an assumption he's as good.....we're a Trojan/Pac12 family and saw his career....good yes, Clay Matthews he's not.......Clay was as good as it gets.....Casey isn't him. It's funny how by extension the Ryans are all as good as there father, and how there's so much of this in sports.....Casey isn't Clay and never will be.......just as the Ryans aren't their old man....sports just has way too much of this nepotistic stuff. I hope he turns into Clay but it's not possible.

Its about time... Matthews isn't NFL ready along with all the other draft picks and it was apparent in preseason... 3 games in, the people running this team finally saw what they fans have been saying since day 1... How can the fans acquire this team like GB is what I'm wondering... Its time to kick these all knowing losers outta town... Its time the fans take over so we can win a super bowl and finally become the Gold Standard they talk about.

Andy's big splash signing all these "star" players is his last ditch attempt to hit the lottery. We need to can AR and get a real coach who doesn't make the same mistakes year after year.

So Big Red has made 3 decisions directly accountable to him that have failed miserably and are the main reason this "dream team" has the putrid start:

    1. Selected an O-line coach to be Defensive Coordinator. Wow, how's that experiment working so far?
    2. Got rid of Kolb, advocated for a huge payout to a QB who won't make it through 10 games a season, knowing full well that his O-line can't block girl scouts.
    3. Picked a starting MLB based purely on his last name who can't recognize a RB if the RB ran up and hit him. Oh, wait, forgot that said MLB hasn't even been in the same zip code of any RB's yet this year.

So, Lurie loads up team with off-season free agent acquisitions. Now, the spotlight is on Big Red. We as fans now finally get to see whether he can coach and stop plying us with excuses as has been the case over the past 12 years. So far, the verdict is as we always suspected: he sucks! Now, how long will it take for Lurie to understand this?

Rolle plays like B Dawk used to - flying around and hitting people. Let's hope he's half the player B Dawk was and maybe it'll at least help a bit.

Maybe Matthews can help Andy carry his play chart and challenge flag - two other things he doesn't have a clue about.

Height means nothing...unless you're a quarterback needing to see over your lineman..He's quick, gets leverage, flys with a high motor, was blue chip in high school and sensational at Ohipo State...Like posted earlier, if it wasn't for the tape, he's a high draft pick...Plus he competes, there's no fear in this guy at all..And this defense, with the exception of Trent Cole,Cullen Jenkins has no swagger or physicality at all.

Remember that Seinfeld episode where Kramer starts showing up at the corporate office in a suit (TCB: Taking Care of Business, he tells Jerry when asked what he is doing there). Eventually the boss calls him into his office and tells Kramer he's got to let him go because he doesn't know what his latest report is...the boss says, "Its as though you have absolutely no business training at all." That's how I see Castillo (and Casey)...no business in the position...gotta let em go!

patting myself on the back for saying Rolle will end up starting this year. Mark1, good point about their drafting. You can occasionally come up lucky & there are enough late-round draft picks starting in this league. But this year the birds seemed to have gone overboard on those ventures (read: cheap).

Castillo seems overmatched, easily outfoxed, a lousy talent evaluator, and a Slow Learner.

Reid should be deprived of headphones on game days. We are witnessing the total collapse of their best-laid plans this season, hopefully andy's last. I just hope guys like vick don't end up permanently disabled. He deserves a second chance in life. AR & Co. blew theirs some years ago.

If Allen still does not have full speed and range of motion, along with his is suspect tackling - probably better to stick with Coleman, who while he had a terrible game vs. NY, has still demonstrated himself to be a more willing and sure tackler.

In other words - it looks to be a lousy trade-off.

As for Matthews - a questionable draft pick, who should be plying his trade on special teams for the forseeable future.

People on here keep complaining about Juan's promotion. I think he's doing a decent job being a first year co-coordinator. No one does a bang up job their first year, he'll learn and get better. He has the defense in good position to make plays, the players just aren't making them and I'm not going to blame Juan for that. Rolle was a 6th round pick and Matthews was a 4th round pick so if you go by draft logic a 4th rounders should be better than a 6th rounder. We'll see how Rolle works out. I'm wondering how Juan was going to play the front four before the wide 9 was thrust upon him when Reid hired Washburn. Juan never worked with that alignment before and I believe now Juan has the LB group he wants and not the one Reid wanted. Reid has a lot of control he needs to just sit back and let those defensive coaches evaluate the talent and put the guys out there that they want. If Reid is so much of an offensive line guy he would tell Mudd he's putting Jackson back at center (is Jamal Jackson still on the team) let him call out those line calls which he has experience doing because Vick ain't Peyton and can't make those line calls to adjust for where the blitz is coming from. I'm wondering if Vick has the ok to change a pass play to a run play and vice versa.

Juan will be just fine. He had no experience before he became an OL coach either bc he was coaching defense and was an LB when he played. And Jim Johnson had no experience on defense either for that matter as he was a QB when he played. Biggest weakness that everyone recognized coming into the year was cornerback...so they went out and got 2 pro bowlers. Rollins was right about his front runner comment. For all of you that are "done" with the eagles, you can send me your tix and i don't expect to hear from you again.

He, like many players, performed well for Johnson, flying around like a rabid animal. I wonder if he's just become used to standing on the sidelines. I predict that he'll get one more chance, probably replacing Moses Doukou, but he better leave no doubt that he's the guy. I liked him too, and thought he had real potential.

Let's face it, as good as we are at the CB position we are equally inept at LB and Safety. The LB position has been neglected, year after year and Nate Allen appears ineffective and another wasted pick by Fat Andy. When will Lurie see the light and realize Fat Andy is awful at evaluating talent....look at his drafts!

We went throught the linbacker merry go round last year because fo injuriesand made it to the playoffs. The lack of OTA's and full press training camp is now affecting the regular season. Look at the undefeated teams, they don't have any real talent, they just don't have to worry about proving anything. 3 week into the season people, we knew it was going to be a rocky start.

How can a professionsal football team implement a defensive line scheme in which the linemen line up with huge gaps in between them and not realize that you would need good LBs and safeties to help stop the run? 13 years in this league has meant nothing to the fat redhead. They pull a Daniel Snyder bringing in veterans for backup positions and then ignore the LB group. Chaney plays great in the middle at the end of last season and they ignore that and replace him with a 4th rd rookie. Our last 2 drafts have been awful in the early rounds and reid is the worst gameday coach I've ever seen. Pop warner has better coaches. Andy, you could have had a starting RT and some linebackers, instead you drafted a frigging kicker and a fireman...LOL!

Trying to polish a turd as usual. It's not saying much when you get benched for Nate Allen. Allen stinks. At least the announcers called him out for taking his usual atrocious angle to the ball carrier. You can't blame his lack of instincts on his injury. He just stinks.

Before seasons end the Eagles starting safeties will be Andre Waters and Reno Made.

To kill time, maybe Kid Watkins can do us all a favor by putting a firehose and some Herbel Essence to benchmate Fabio.

Can we bench Andy and Juan while we are at it? Andy might be the worst I have ever seen at drafting defensive players. Juan Castillo is just overmatched as the defensive coach.

The Rolle move seemed obvious. At least they are willing to change based on performance. Allen has not looked right since his injury, I hope they don't run him over when he attempts a tackle.

Although the Eagles ave been horrible the last 2 weeks, it is early in the season. They still have a chance to turn their year around. With that said, I find it hard to believe that a team could make so many bad personnel decisions. To have their first three draft picks not even playing on special teams is a disgrace. Their #4 pick, Casey Matthews, is obviously not ready. To spend a ton of money foolishly as they did shows incompetence. For the money they invested in Nnamdi and Vick, they could have solidified the entire defense. There were good, veteran linebacker and safety free agents who would have loved to play for the Eagles and could have been signed for reasonable salaries. They also could have brought in an experienced and previously successful defensi ve coordinator instead of giving the job to someone with no defensive coaching in college or the NFL. Could have should have is accurate

Does Lance Briggs still want to be traded? How about DRC or Assante + our 2012 1st Round Pick for Briggs? We have enough corners, we need linebackers.

Are these eagles front office serious? After spending all these monies on Safeties AND CB'S etc. Awful tackling Problems!!... Eagles defensive team after 3 games and counting!! I watched Oakland defensive players the other nite and I knew Eagles-D are in BIG BIG trouble. Ofcourse, teams will take advantage of Eagles-D small size.
Once again, HELP ! HELP !!WHEN COULD WE EXPECT A SB TO COME TO PHILLY.

Amazing that a coach with that much experience ...coaching us for over 10 yrs now...needs three games and two losses to realize which players are better then the others on the team. Seriously isn't that a basic need for a coach ...to just look at players and go...ok this guys better then that guy. Why does our staff struggle with that?????

Just a second, Jeff. Les Bowen hit you in the head,so first you have to match your baseline tests with Rick Burkholder, and then be cleared by an independant neurologist before you can cover this game.

RoLLe over Matthews I see this coming. He is small but know how to get in position to make plays.

Allen over Coleman? no brainer because as far as Statistics Coleman lead the Secondary at Tackles hello!!! he made a bad play that cost his spot. Would Brain Dawkins be bench if he made a bad play like that?

Now all they have to do is replace that stiff Page with Jarrett from Temple and they'll actually have something resembling a defense.

I understand that LBs are the hardest to predict coming out of college, but that doesn't mean ignore the position completely. Matthews will be a good back-up in a couple of years, unless this year destroys his mental makeup.

Auntesther is right, as usual. Rolle has a chip on his shoulder. And he understands this league, that you need both attitude and technique. They'll probably burn him often with the pass, but it'll be interesting to see what he does.

Rolle seems like a scrapper. However, have you seen him next to other players on the field. Although listed bigger, he looks maybe 5'9" and about 205lbs. He will wear down because of the defensive scheme.

What worries me is that during Training Camp Allen with his injury was sold to the public and fans as being better and more talented than the safeties in camp. How does a safety with one good leg show himself to be better than other safeties in camp with two good legs?

Page is so slow he looks to be running backwards. He's always showing up at the sceen of a burn bomb job a second to late.

Allen is a loser. He was inconsistent and ineffective before his injury. Coleman is better - but hardly good enough. No linebackers, no safeties...no wins. Time to clean house and pick up whoever ou can. This crew is NEVER going to make it to the playoffs let alone the big dance.

If you think Clay was awful and he sureely was, wait until you see how bad Rolle is and why Matthews replaced him in preseason. This is a team in tatters and we'll be lucky to go 6 - 10 this year. Don't ask Juan. He has no clue. The rumor in Philly among people who know is that Vince Young will replace Vick before the middle of the season and only win three games. Vick will be out of foorball along with Donovan McChoke next year. Hey philly fans, how do you like the team you wanted the way you wanted it? Not quite a dream team, eh?

I just don't understand the incredibly bad talent evaluation of the Eagles. Not sure where the blame lies but this team is just plain inferior. What is the problem? This team does not match up with most average NFL teams and it shows every week. The Falcons and Giants just have better personel than the Eagles, it was obvious last Sunday. How they have made the playoffs in recent years is a mystery. We have a 10-6 team at best to look forward to this year with a first round loss in the playoffs. I have had faith in Andy Reid until now. Something has to break this cycle of mediorcracy. We need to move on. Andy Reid is done.

why is jarret not given a shot at starting...or even have him on the field for certain defensive packages? Jarret is their best tackler, a physical player, and is always around the football. He played well for a rookie in the preseason why is he not starting or even being activated? hell u give kelce a shot a center a more important position than safety as a rookie and u didnt know what to expect from him. u know what to expect of jarret but hes not even being activiated for games. starting safeties should be FS Coleman SS Jarret..I dont think coleman should lose his job because of one bad play, hell if thats the case page shouldnt even be starting as many wiffs he had in all three games. Allen cant tackle worth a damn everytime i see him play hes getting run over..if u think allen is a better tackler than coleman u snorting something. why is akeem jordan not starting? I never understood why jordan always loses his starting spot. he didnt do anything spectacular but never did anything to lose it either i always thought he was one of their most solid linebackers. I know hes a upgrade over fokou. I dont get this defensive philosophy. They play everybody out of position man to man corners playing zone starting safeties that cant tackle. Start your most physicals safeties and they can help the linebackers stop the run and play over the top in passing situations. u have three corners thjat can play man why r u playing zone? This team has the players to be a great defense, but until this coaching staff starts the right people at their natural positions and plays to their players strength. U r not going to see any progression with this unit. I like the rolle move, matthews may be a great linebacker someday, but right now hes just plain not any good, I havent seen anything from him that suggests otherwise.

Nate Allen was Defensive Rookie of the Month in September of last year. He isn't a great tackler but he was awesome in coverage until he started getting injuries. Nate Allen for coverage, Brian Rolle for run stoppage. I feel like this will slightly upgrade our defense. You'll still see Coleman and Rodgers-Cromartie get on the field. Now all we need is some solid play calling on BOTH sides of the ball.
