An offensive coordinator with Eagles ties appears headed to the Browns, but it's not Marty Mornhinweg. The Browns are close to hiring Rams offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur, according to this report from ESPN.
Shurmur spent seven years coaching the Eagles quarterbacks.
If Shurmur is hired, it would close the job that seemed the most likely fit for Mornhinweg, who has long-time ties to Browns president Mike Holmgren. As of Tuesday no one had asked for or received permission to interview Mornhinweg.
As the head of the NFL's number three scoring offense and one of the coaches who helped re-make Michael Vick's game, Mornhinweg was considered a hot candidate earlier this year. You have to wonder if the offensive swoon against the Vikings and Packers hurt his chances to finally land another head coaching job.
There are still other openings, and rumors about college opportunities, but the Browns were the team where he seemed most likely to land.
