Mora among three candidates to replace McDermott

Jim Mora has emerged as a "serious" candidate to fill the Eagles' vacant defensive coordinator position, according to a source close to the situation.
The former Falcons and Seahawks coach joins Eagles senior assistant Dick Jauron and former Cardinals defensive coordinator Billy Davis as the three primary contenders for Sean McDermott's old job, the source said. The list could grow to include other candidates.
The interview process has yet to begin and may be delayed because head coach Andy Reid is currently vacationing.
Mora last coached in Seattle and was fired after one season. During his three-year stint in Atlanta he coached current Eagles quarterback Michael Vick.
McDermott, meanwhile, has already interviewed with Denver and Carolina to fill their defensive coordinator needs, a league source said.
FROM EARLIER:
Former Falcons and Seahawks head coach Jim L. Mora is among the candidates to become the Eagles new defensive coordinator, according to an ESPN report citing an unidentified source.
Billy Davis, who the Cardinals recently fired as defensive coordinator, is another name mentioned in the report.
Eagles secondary coach Dick Jauron is another obvious candidate, but so far the team has kept mostly quiet about others who may or may not be considered.
Mike Singletary is one name likely ruled out. Another, Rob Ryan, is off the table after reportedly landing the Cowboys' defensive coordinator job.
Mora coached the Seahawks in 2009, but was fired after one season. His Seattle team finished near the bottom of the league in most key defensive categories, including 25th in points allowed. He was head coach of the Falcons for three seasons, but those team's defenses generally finished in the middle of the pack or near the bottom in most statistical categories. Before getting the Falcons job he was defensive coordinator for the 49ers.
Davis ran the Cardinals defense for the past two seasons but was fired earlier this month. The Cardinals finished near the bottom of the league in major defensive categories, including 30th in points allowed and 29th in yards-per-game. In sharp contrast to the Eagles, though, the Cardinals finished first in red zone defense.
The report also said McDermott could be a candidate to become defensive coordinator in Denver or Carolina.

- Peppers chose the Bears over the Eagles because of a personal preference. I do believe the Eagles offered him a bit more money. This was according to Sal Pal, so it sounds pretty legit. Can't fault the Eagles over that.

good to see we're looking at absolutely horrible candidates with terrible track records. GOLD STANDARD alyosha- Mora doesn't seem like a good hire at all. I'd rather just go with Jauron. As for the move to a 3-4 I agree that lots of teams are having success with it but our linebackers are terrible and I'm not interested in seeing more of them on the field at the same time.
- Why would Billick, Wannstedt or even Mora even consider the DC job? Folks, face it they fired the wrong guy. Right now Reid should be learning how to work the board for a call-in show on Westwood One. The Eagles will never win a Championship under Reid. Check out the career of Dan Reeves (who does have a Westwood One show). Some guys just can't win the big one - Reeves couldn't and Reid is not close to as good a coach as Reeves. Andy shouldn't be grappling with any choices other than those presented to him at an all you can eat buffet. tooly
- Chuck G25 you are a lunatic, and I love the idea of Andy as DC. Who knows more about stopping offenses in big games. Coach and GM for life. Time's his. Eephus

Comment removed.- McDermott got fired a week too late. Maybe there could have been a play for Rob Ryan. Kevin Greene would be a good choice, but I doubt we could even interview him until Green Bay is out of the playoffs.
- Any assistant coach in the playoffs can be interviewed during the off week before the super bowl. They would have to wait until after next weekend to interview Greene.

Dick Vermeil is only 74. Bring him back for 2-3 years as defensive coordinator! BrianNJ
ANDY'S Firsts REQUIREMENT FOR DC is WHO can I control...notice most candidates are or have been exposed to ANDY'S WAY.... carmen2
whoever the next D coach coach he is going to look GOOD. Eagles D will be vastly improved just by players coming back and everyone 1 year older. Add in a stud cb signed and or drafted with 1 or 2 pick. Add in a trade for Haynesworth and we move into top 10. I'm good with clayton at will carney at middle and bradley at strong side. I'm good with letting Mikel go and going coleman and allen. Were so young on D and Eagles have to want to win now so signing a couple older d players to help win SB in next 2 years won't kill there long term approach .. howardp
and yeah PEPPERS would have been perfect but they really undervalues there rcb. Ellis Hobbs was blah...Thats was teams biggest downfall. Sheldon would have made some difference. They need a lot of youth there. You could be looking at 3 corners in this next draft if talent warrents it howardp
Good idea spz, but to replace Andy Reid. Billick was an offensive coordinator before he became the Ravens' head coach. rhawnhurster
Please, not Mora. And not Jauron. Either would be insulting to the memory of Jim Johnson. I'm glad they sacked McDermott since he seemed over his head.
Ideally, they hire a solid DC type. Wade Phillips would have been a good choice had they done this earlier, of course. I'm open to a well respected defensive type from the college ranks, too.
But I'm thinking right now about Brian Dawkins right now and thinking about how that might be a really neat idea -- player/coach until he retires. Also thinking about Todd Bowles, who has been a successful and regarded coach and has local roots playing at Temple. ds
