Mora among three candidates to replace McDermott

POSTED: Sunday, January 16, 2011, 12:59 PM

Who should the Eagles pick to be their defensive coordinator?
Billy Davis
Dick Jauron
Jim Mora
Someone else

Jim Mora has emerged as a "serious" candidate to fill the Eagles' vacant defensive coordinator position, according to a source close to the situation.

The former Falcons and Seahawks coach joins Eagles senior assistant Dick Jauron and former Cardinals defensive coordinator Billy Davis as the three primary contenders for Sean McDermott's old job, the source said. The list could grow to include other candidates.

The interview process has yet to begin and may be delayed because head coach Andy Reid is currently vacationing.

Mora last coached in Seattle and was fired after one season. During his three-year stint in Atlanta he coached current Eagles quarterback Michael Vick.

McDermott, meanwhile, has already interviewed with Denver and Carolina to fill their defensive coordinator needs, a league source said.

FROM EARLIER:

Former Falcons and Seahawks head coach Jim L. Mora is among the candidates to become the Eagles new defensive coordinator, according to an ESPN report citing an unidentified source.

Billy Davis, who the Cardinals recently fired as defensive coordinator, is another name mentioned in the report.

Eagles secondary coach Dick Jauron is another obvious candidate, but so far the team has kept mostly quiet about others who may or may not be considered.

Mike Singletary is one name likely ruled out. Another, Rob Ryan, is off the table after reportedly landing the Cowboys' defensive coordinator job.

Mora coached the Seahawks in 2009, but was fired after one season. His Seattle team finished near the bottom of the league in most key defensive categories, including 25th in points allowed. He was head coach of the Falcons for three seasons, but those team's defenses generally finished in the middle of the pack or near the bottom in most statistical categories. Before getting the Falcons job he was defensive coordinator for the 49ers.

Davis ran the Cardinals defense for the past two seasons but was fired earlier this month. The Cardinals finished near the bottom of the league in major defensive categories, including 30th in points allowed and 29th in yards-per-game. In sharp contrast to the Eagles, though, the Cardinals finished first in red zone defense.

The report also said McDermott could be a candidate to become defensive coordinator in Denver or Carolina.

Typical FO, lets get a DC on the cheap. Who's the worst one out there? How about Mora? This team has some good players, but horrible coaches. Andy used McDermott as a scapegoat to hide his own blunders this year. The insanity continues!

I always liked the stuff Billy Davis did with Marilyn McCoo, like Wedding Bell Blues and Stoned Soul Picnic.

Mike Singletary would seem like a great fit if he is not only focused on a return as a head coach. johnnyu

They need to expand their search a bit. I agree with phillyjhawk...has to be someone you can find in the college ranks.

They both stink. We should get a defensive coach from the Steelers/Ravens/Pats who knows the 3-4 and can turn this thing around.

Ugh...I am pretty sure the new DC will make the fans that wanted McD fired wish that they had him back. Throw money at Monte Kiffen and try to pry him away from USC and his son or go after one of the Pelini's from Nebraska.

If your going to fire someone, you better replace him with someone better. There's a reason these guys are available.

Mora is a bad decision, another joker living off his name instead of his merits... I'll pass

    I'm surprised Dave Wannstedt's name isn't mentioned.

What about Brian Billick, the former head coach of the Ravens?
