Report: Eagles offered Brown and pick for Boldin
Jeff McLane, Inquirer Staff Writer
Say it ain't so, but there's more from the Anquan Boldin front. According to Kent Somers of The Arizona Republic, the Eagles offered cornerback Sheldon Brown and a third round pick for the Cardinals wide receiver. Arizona, wisely, rejected the offer. I'm not positive, but I'm sure the Eagles were willing to toss in a few of T.O.'s unused jock straps, as well.
Earlier this week, Eagles coach Andy Reid went on 610-WIP and said that the asking price for Boldin was too high. He said -- just throwing out numbers for spits and giggles -- that first, third and fifth round picks, plus Boldin's $10 million salary would be too much for the Eagles to give up/take on if such a deal were to have existed.
Neverthless, the Eagles drafted Jeremy Maclin in the first round instead and there's no reason to ponder (right?) what might have been. Still, it might be interesting to hear what Brown thought about the proposed deal. He said he wanted out just prior to the draft. The Eagles were presumably willing to grant his wish right away. Of course, their low ball offer could hardly suggest they were ready to send Brown off so soon.
Brown, by the way, reportedly met with Eagles president Joe Banner to clear the air. Brown was upset with Banner when he went on the radio and said he was unaware that his starting cornerback wanted a new contract. Brown has taken veiled and some not-too-veiled shots at Banner. I'm sure the kiss-and-make up was as uncomfortable as you might imagine.
Are you sure that wasn't Reggie Brown and not Sheldon? That would have made more sense. nunyabz
I'm happier with what we got in the draft anyway. We have a good enough team to make it over the top this year and a stron young team for years to come. Boldin would have cost too much. The FO did a good job tampaPhillyfan
wow they really wanted to get him (insert eye roll). ag
This is an interesting report. G Cobb had a good point after the draft--he argued that the Eagles were worried about Curtis, so they drafted Maclin, even though they weren't planning on spending a first rounder on a wide receiver. Would the Eagles still be interesting in making a move? I think not since they would have to pay a new receiver big money and suck up the money it would take to cut Reggie Brown. (They could cut Avant, but I believe Andy really likes him--he called him one of the best slot guys around) tgray83
What a joke- typical trade offer from the FO so they can tell us fans "We went after Boldin". Just enough to keep us clinging for hope. Had they actually manned up and gave the Cards a 1st rounder and Lito last year, we'd have LFitz. terb
Why would Reggie Brown make more sense? At least Sheldon Brown is a starter. Reggie Brown wouldn't be one of Arizona's top 4 WR's. Either way, that's a brutal offer for one of the best 10 WR's in the game. Billy The Kid
well the fact the Boldin is still in AZ means none of the other teams didnt want to pay that much either...perhaps AZ were never serious in the first place. donutdan

How long is it going to take people to realize that Boldin in NOT available unless you make a REALLY stupid offer. If he was available for a fair and/or reasonable offer he would have been out of Arizona on or before draft day. A 1st, 3rd and 5th round draft picks is WAY too much. I'm sure the Brown offer was just something to get the talk started to see what Arizona wanted. This dead horse is beaten, find something else to talk about. PLEASE. craig123

Complaining about the WR situation around here is becoming such a broken record. Let's give Maclin, DeSean and Curtis a chance. If this team doesn't win this year, there will be a bigger shakeup than just WR. MattPSU- We should have offered Jroll and Sheldon! ZOSO
Gee two Browns for Boldin might have worked far better. We would then have a real WR corp no matter who was out there to fear. Oh well, let us see how Macklin and Jackson work out together. But no picks for anyone anymore should be a plan to follow. The Birds actually drafted well this year. KGKoons

what ? this is news. how about that offer tampa bay made to san diego. just as interesting. JACK V
The guys a malcontent. I'd rather have Maclin. Grazman
I'm trying to imagine this year's offense with Boldin and the tight end from KC we didn't get either. Siiiiiiiiighhhh. TBear
Boldin's got a bad hammy. It's going to effect him throughout the rest of his career. Yes, he's good, but I don't know about his contract length and his speed (and hurt hammy) to go along with it. I would have rather gotten Edwards. Whatever. Maclin better not stink! jearnha
Comment removed.- To the person who thinks Lito and a first would have brought Fitz, - WROOOOOOOOOONG. The Cardinal knew he was a beast. No way they give him up for junk. Yes Lito and a first is junk compared to Fitz. Nobody in the draft was as good as Fitz. Lito would not make up the difference.
He was never leaving....Arizona never wanted to let him go unless some team got stupid and offered 2 number ones and 2 number twos or some other ridiculous offer.. nuggett
does it really matter who #5 is overthrowing / underthrowing? Really? ekw

Comment removed.- When Boldin gets his money, wherever it may be, he will disappear and never be as good. Let some other team pay him 9.99million per year, im glad it wasnt the eagles...just like B-Dawk, love em, but let some other team throw millions to a 36 yr old DB.
I don't believe this report for a second. We would not have offered Brown in a trade BEFORE the draft as we only had 2 other CBs on the roster with NFL experience. We didn't pick up Hobbs until the 2nd day of the draft. This report makes no sense and there were numerous inaccurate reports about Boldin right before the trade deadline. How about you to try to confirm whether this nonsense ever occurred before you start asking Brown to speculate about it. I seriously doubt the Eagles would make the strong public statement that they made and then a few days later cave to Brown's trade demand, particularly when they'd leave themselves extremely thin at the CB position....which is a position they value tremendously. JimG
I'm rock solid sure that Wisenhunt and his staff were rolling on the floor laughing cheech n chong style upon receiving this request, if they were serious enough to make an offer, this low ball package will certainly not get it done, especially after Fitz made Brown look stupid on that fade td. 1st thing the team has done wrong this offseason letting this leak. Onlineps2beast
Ocho Stinko for Bolden straight up.....like dumpin a shovel full fire ants into the outhouse. garyshaffer
Not surprising..I live in Phoenix and from what I'm hearing here Boldin wants to play in AZ if possible. Rosenhaus reduced his asking price to do so as well. Boldin is good but he's not great. He needs get rid of that big chip residing on his right shoulder. The Iggles are better off without him long term and they want to get younger and faster at the WR position. Not to mention the draft pick of Maclin shows the FO is planning for post McNabb. Desert Steve
Dude...Whatever! CapitanesFua
mikemike.... that may have been the dumbest thing that anyone has ever written on any of these posts. Keep your day job brother. jonjon75
I think a story that goes overlooked is how the Eagles have been burned by giving some young players a big deal with a lot of years. Reggie Brown is a player who signed a big deal for a ton of years and has very much under performed on his contract. He makes so much that cutting him would create over 2 million in dead money. Win some lose some when dealing with any risk. The eagles gambled on Reggie Brown and lost but Reggie won. The eagles gambled on Sheldon Brown and won but Sheldon lost (although I really find it hard to believe that making 14 million in 7 years is losing). Nothing but the truth
So MikeMike, what color is the sky on the planet you live on? Brown, Brown, Andrews, 3rd round pick and 1st round next year?? For Boldin?? Don't quit your day job just yet for that NFL GM position. CaptMorgan
while the country burns the apathetic citizenry worry about millionaires playing a child's game. they got us were they want us. the people get the government they deserve. give me liberty or death
marvin is still availible and he is from philly roderunner
Pats got Randy Moss for a 4th rounder and he is about 100x better than Boldin. The plain fact of the matter is Boldin isn't worth a 1st rounder, maybe a single 2nd rounder. The guy is Amani Toomer, You want to rip next year's draft apart for Amani Toomer. No. jkard99
Comment removed.
What happened jkard99 is that the Dallas Cowboys set the market when they overspent for Roy Williams with a 1st, a 3rd and some other picks. So now every team wants the same compensation which is ridiculous. If the Eagles were serious about getting a big time WR they should have gotten Moss when he was a available from OAK. To let a player like that go for a 4th rounder is absurd and to stand by and watch it proves that Andy did get it. It has taken 11 years for Andy to realize that you want to have some talent at the WR position in a pass oriented offense. Nothing but the truth

sheldon brown is s a solid player. he's still here. the eagles just added another solid upgrade on the other side of the ball w jmac in the draft.a boldin still a cardinal ? no complaints. MJPD345
The FO did the right thing. They needed to shore up the O-line. Boldin might be one of the top ten receivers in the league, but what good would that do if the QB is getting sacked or under intense pressure every play because of a poor offensive line? He'd look great running his routes and the ball would never get there. That's why Roy Williams and then Calvin Johnson- very good receivers- often had/have pedestrian numbers in Detroit. They can't do anything if the guy throwing them the ball can't do his job because the line stinks. thealphawolf
I believe Sheldon will be gone before the season starts. The Eagles will wait and see what Hobbs and Macho bring to the table in camp. If their effective enough Brown will be gone. Hopefully they can get a 3rd rounder but a 4th will probably be more like it. He's 30, wants more money and has never made the Pro Bowl and never will. Atleast Lito made the Pro Bowl and the Eagles got a 5th this year and a 3rd or maybe 2nd, based on his performance next year. Sheldon isn't worth more than a 3rd or 4th. Who can we dump Reggie and Winston on? Booker could be history too and we gave up a 4th for him. There will be atleast 8 new faces on this roster by opening day. This will be the most exciting Eagles team ever. Fly Eagles Fly. The Marco Islander
A 1,3 and a 5 and $10 mil a year for a player that is in his late 20's, is not going to handle the ball most of the time and has only played 2 full seasons out of six, he may only be around 3 to 4 more years in which he might not play the majority of the next 3 or 4 more, would have to guarantee me and my team 1-3 Superbowls and I don't think Bolden does that. VegasEagleFan
the cards only wanted a second round pick, so a third and sheldon brown is too much. the reason they only wanted a number 2 is, many people think boldin doesn't have much left in the tank. he's got a bad hip, and ray didinger said people around the league think he might only have a couple of years left... happy they didn't make that trade! pbowers
The o-line had to be addressed and it was, the Eagles needed to fix the short yardage tough yards game and they got Weaver a real Fullback not a project, (ie Hunt, Klecko)and WR and the redzone Maclin and Ingram. I think we are ok at wr with Jackson, Baskett, Avant Curtis when healthy and Brown. If we need another wr get Harrison. You can still throw to Westbrook out of the backfield or in short yardage, no linebacker can keep up with him. If you are going to make a trade for anyone get Julius Peppers from Carolina, weaken a pontential foe come playoff time (and 1st game of the season) and strengthen the defensive running and passing game. With Westbrook, Weaver and McCoy the Eagles can run the ball more 50/50 52/48 and the need for a number one reciever is a non-issue. Remember DEFENSE WINS CHAMPIONSHIPS. SPEND THE MONEY ON THE DEFENSE!!!!! VegasEagleFan
is this a report or an editorial? why is the author, jeff mclane (who?), making a judgment about the wisdom of rejecting this purported trade offer? is he some kind of football insider or just another hack with little to knowledge of what's going on in the league? pbowers
the birds should have made a true bid for Tony Gonzalez..period teephilly76
I thought some of the proposed trades callers make to radio shows were funny. Ill give you Romon Aviles & Steve Jeltz for Johan Santana. I dont know why the Eagles are holding onto Reno Mahe. If they would have included him in the trade, I guarantee Boldin would be running routes for the Eagles this year. Pat c
The Cards were never going to trade Boldin- saying that they were listening to offers was just posturing so they could come back to Boldin and get him to accept a low offer and fit into their salary cap slot for a #2 reciever. FreeSheldonBrown
Was it really a bad offer? What negotiator leads with the best offer? If the cards wanted to trade the guy, he would have gone to the highest bidder. Please go out an find some news and spot re-hashing trash! NickEeee
They should have tossed reggie brown in as well. We could have had Maclin and Bouldin. Oh well. We now have a core of talented players who can put together a 5=7 year run. All we need now is a quarterback..... dutchman
Here are they 2010 potential Eagles FA's. Weaver, Avant, Baskett, Justice, Max Jean-Gillis, Nick Cole, Gordon, Gocong, Jordan RFA, Gaither, Daniels RFA, Hobbs, Jones, Baker and Rocca RFA. All 4 current OLB's are free agents. Eagles should wrap up some of these guys now before they hit the FA market. The Marco Islander
I'm more excited about the Eagles getting Maclin than I would have been if they landed Boldin. Boldin is good, but he's not great. Desean Jackson had a great rookie season and I expect him to be even better this year. Maclin has the potential to have as good or better a rookie season than Jackson, so that could only mean good things for the offense. When you throw in the retooled offensive line, the additions of Weaver and others, this could be a great season for the Eagles. jimqk
You should never overpay to get one veteran football player, because that individual may have a serious injury or start aging at any time. You trade away a 1, 3, and 5 and it's almost guaranteed at least one of those players will be a better player than Boldin in 2 years. That basically makes it a one-year deal, so if Boldin does anything short of lead the team to a Super Bowl victory in 2009 you've just been ripped off. AZ was just throwing out a sucker bet hoping someone would be desperate enough to take it, a la the Ricky Williams and Herschel Walker deals. Bobby G
Hey Billy the kid I am not sure he is one of the top ten receivers in football. I can think of ten who I’d rather have then Boldin because he has never had an outstanding year without the best receiver in football right now. You will notice that all of these receivers are clear number ones on there team where as Boldin is the clear number two(probably the best number two in football but a number two still the same). 1. Larry Fitzgerald 2. Calvin Johnson 3. Andre Johnson 4. Randy Moss 5. Steve Smith 6. Brandon Marshall 7. Reggie Wayne 8. Marcus Colston 9. Roddy White 10. Braylon Edwards/ Gregg Jennings/ Plaxico Burress PhiNChi

PhiNChi I see you fell for the mumbo jumble of WIP. Boldin was a great player before Fitzgerald even came along. Did you forget that he posted 101 catches 1377 yards and 8 TD's in his rookie year without Fitzgerald. He wasn't even the highest drafted WR on his team that year (ARI selected B. Johnson in the 1st round that year) Nothing but the truth
Sure seems like teams don't value Anquan as much as Anquan values Anquan. He isn't a legit $10 mil/year guy, so teams aren't dying to bring him on board. Given the present salary grumpiness on the Eagles, I'm glad they didn't bring him in and overpay him. DLRJ
hey terp, we were never going to get Fitz. Just like we weren't going to get Boldin either. Why would the Cards give up either one of them for our problem players. They don't want to pay anybody just like the Eagles. They hedged on fitz, warner, dansbury but reluctantly paid them eventually and they will pay boldin too. What ever happened to the WR from Cleveland? tmoon51
