Jerome Harrison has brain tumor

POSTED: Thursday, October 20, 2011, 1:04 PM

Eagles doctors found a brain tumor when they examined running back Jerome Harrison after his trade from the Detroit Lions to Philadelphia, The Inquirer has confirmed.

ESPN, which first reported the diagnosis, also reported that Harrison's outlook for his health and playing career are both good.

The Eagles traded Ronnie Brown for Harrison and a seventh round draft pick in 2013, but the deal was voided Wednesday when Harrison failed his physical. The Eagles did not disclose why Harrison failed and would not comment on the report today, citing both privacy concerns and the fact that Harrison is once again a member of the Lions. Harrison, 28, was not on the field for Lions practice Thursday, and head coach Jim Schwartz would not comment on the player's health, according to reports out of Detroit. His agent did not immediately return a call seeking comment.

ESPN's Adam Schefter wrote on Twitter that had it not been for the trade and physical, doctors might still be unaware of the tumor. "Trade might have saved his life," Schefter wrote.

Wow, what a shock. God bless him and his family. It is strange that a trade, which most guys don't exactly welcome, may have saved his life. I hope it does.

i might be totally wrong on this,
but i remember seeing or reading that each player has a brain scan taken with their physical before the start of training camp and if that player gets dinged during the season, they can compare scans after the ding to healthy scans from the start of training camp to determine the extent of damage and recovery progress.

    indeed He does.
sneaking around giving people tumors, then allowing them to be discovered in a chance physical.
    rather mysterious behavior.
but all part of the Plan, I ma told.

If you gone pay millions...you checking every nook and cranny. They said tumor not cancer and that is key. a tumor can be shrunk and reduced with meds.

Interesting question with regards to why the Lions didn't detect it. I'm guessing medical testing is not standard, but team-by-team based. Birds are just more thorough...still, I agree the best catch of the season. Best wishes for a speedy recovery.

Its a blessing in one way and in another it tells you exactly how the NFL treats the players it supposedly look out for. The Eagles traded for or purchased Harrison until it found out it was spoiled meat so they sent it back to the store it came from. Instead of just getting him the surgery he needs as a human being in one of the best operating cities in America the Eagles sent him back to Detroit and now he is the Lions problem. For all the BS the NFL was spinning during the lockout how they were pro players and how the lockouts was about VETERAN players not getting the money they deserved in comparison with rookies. They made Greed the catalysis when the NFL views both the old players and the new players exactly the same. They are products, meat, and usage viable commodities.

lol, come on bleedgreen, I thought his post was pretty funny myself. I think everyone is over-reacting. the guys life was not in jeapardy or anything. The NFL tests for concussion with MRI all the time and they would have found this eventually if he kept complaining of not feeling well or had symtoms. The tumor is obvioulsy benign. He will be fine. I think its funny that Detroit probably knew something was wrong with the guy, but they probably werent sure what, and so they almost successfuly dumped him off to Fat Andy. the trade w/o the medical aspect was TOTAL STUPIDITY. JH will be fine. Reid will undoubetedly pick him up when hes coaching in Cleveland or Kansas City next year, now that hes had a surgery he will be set for life on any Andy Reid future roster.

if in fact the "outlook for his health and playing career are good," then he does not have a malignant tumor, and probably has a benign meningioma. Brain surgery is never trivial, but the difference between benign and malignant brain tumors is huge.

We're here in a town that lost 2 beloved Phils to malignant brain tumors, Tug and Vuke. Jerome Harrison is indeed lucky and blessed if it is indeed benign. Just a very strange set of circumstances that resulted in his diagnosis. Now, let's see how the Ford family takes care of their own.... I wish nothing but the best for Jerome Harrison.
