UPDATE:

While it is unlikely that the Brett Favre-to-Eagles rumors will quell now that the cat is out of the bag, the probability of such a pairing is low.

Whether the Eagles have any interest or not, the likelihood of the Favre circus coming to this town was characterized by several league sources as the longest of long shots.

That won't likely end the speculation or the talk radio chatter, but the week is expected to be full of activity and rumors with the lockout near over and free agency on the horizon. So maybe the Favre-to-Eagles gossip won't end up having much legs anyway.

Or it will.

Eagles quarterback Michael Vick tweeted the following Sunday morning: "I would be honored to have Brett Favre as a backup. That will be amazing learning how to toy with defenses the way he did his whole career."

FROM LAST NIGHT:

You knew it was coming.

The lockout's not even over, the Eagles haven't even traded Kevin Kolb yet, but a report has surfaced that the team is interested in Brett Favre as their backup for next season.

WIP's Howard Eskin, citing sources, went on NBC10 this evening and reported that it was "possible" the Eagles could sign the future Hall of Fame quarterback.

A team source told The Inquirer that bringing Favre to Philly was a "long shot" and that a "lot of things would need to fall into place" for it happen. For one, Favre may not even want to play football anymore, although he's held the NFL hostage before with his will-he-or-won't-he-retire act.

And if Favre even wants to un-retire, who says he wants to come back as a backup? The 41-year old has made it clear before that he never wanted to play second string.

But there are a few reasons to think Favre may be willing to accept an offer from the Eagles. He has a close bond with Eagles head coach Andy Reid and offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg, having worked with both in Green Bay. And he may also want one last shot at winning a Super Bowl.

The Eagles will likely be in search of a starting-caliber quarterback as Michael Vick's backup if and when they trade Kolb. There are several candidates on the market, including Seattle's Matt Hasselbeck and St. Louis' Marc Bulger, but neither has the cachet of Favre, even though he was banged up by the end of last season.

No way Andy would do that. It would create far too many distractions in a short offseason. Not to mention the distraction when Vick has a bad game. Or the fact that Favre is a washed up turnover machine. If he was that worried about Vick, he would just hang onto Kolb. It's not even on Andy's radar because there is little to no benefit.

It would be a good move. Favre knows Andy Reid's offense like the back of his hand. He can still play at a high level but his body can't take the pounding of a full season. But being a backup on a team with a shot of winning it all would be a good situation for him.

PLEASE NO!!! This guy has morphed into a diva & has shown no ability or interest in being the quiet, behind the scenes supporter a backup needs to be. What's the over-under on how many days after Vick's first mediocre game it will take to start hearing the "who's team is it?" whispers? Again, please NO!

OHGODNO. We do not need Captain Vicodin on this team. He's a freaking train wreck and a locker room cancer.

Howard Eskin? Then you know it must be true! hahahaha what a joke. The guy is just trying really hard to be relevant. I really hate it when fake reporters hide behind "inside sources". When we all know he just made it up.

Exactly drjk. The best part is that moron Eskin spelled "Favre" wrong in his tweet ... he spelled it Farve.

I would bring McNabb back before even considering Favre.

I agree player. If Mcnabb can't find a starting position in the league, the Eagles should definitely consider bringing him back--because of his familiarity with the system and Vick's inability to play a whole season.

Aw hell no! I need to know why they can't keep Kolb, who, is under contract for what, 1.5 mil? C'mon. Vick is not a QB that will win a Superbowl. Forget all the dog stuff. Just pure football, why can't they keep Kolb?

Wouldn't McNabb make more sense assuming he gets cut by the Skins? Just because the Vick gamble paid off last year, why do people think every knuclehead can be reborn as an Eagle -- Plaxico, Vince Young, Favre, Haynesworth?
