The Eagles are about to finalize a contract extension with defensive end Trent Cole, according to an NFL source.

Sal Paolantonio of ESPN of first reported the news. Terms of the extension are unknown.

News of Cole's deal comes several hours after the Eagles announced an extension for tackle Todd Herremans. Cole, like Herremans, was signed through 2013. Both players have also been long-time, productive mainstays for the Eagles.

With today being the start of free agency, the Eagles have gone about their business of locking up some of their own talent. Cole has been consistently good for the Eagles since they drafted him in the fifth round of the 2005 draft.

Are you happy with how the Eagles fared on the first day of NFL free agency?
Yes. They seem to be set up for a great season.

No. They did not address their biggest needs.

Doesn’t matter. You don’t win by signing free agents.

The 29-year-old has recorded double-digit sacks in four of the last five seasons and has 68 career quarterback take downs. He was voted into the Pro Bowl in 2007 and 2009. With Jason Babin opposite Cole, the Eagles have two of the stronger defensive ends in the NFL. Babin notched 18 sacks last season for the Eagles after they acquired the 31-year old free agent last summer.

Cole's extension is an indicator that the Eagles will sit the Mario Williams sweepstakes out, even though they weren't likely suitors for the Texans' pass rusher. Williams landed in Buffalo today for a visit with the Bills and is expected to earn one of the top salaries in free agency.
