Report: Three teams interested in Mathis

Now that the Eagles have locked up two long-time veterans, it seemed the time was right to turn to players such as Evan Mathis and Derek Landri, who each made strong contributions last year in their first seasons in Philadelphia.

There's competition, though, for Mathis, according to ESPN, which reported that he is scheduled to visit the Ravens and has also drawn interest from the Colts and Redskins. The Ravens are in danger of losing guard Ben Grubb, and some rate Mathis as one of the best offensive linemen on the market.

Mathis has said he would like to return to the Eagles, but has also made it clear he plans to test the free agent market. He is 30 and has spent his career bouncing between teams before establishing himself as a regular starter last season, contributing to a vastly improved Eagles offensive line. This could be his one chance to land a big contract.

Aside from the Ravens, the Redskins obviously saw Mathis twice last year and the Colts general manager is ex-Eagles personnel man Ryan Grigson.

"Interest" of course can mean a lot of things, especially at a time when rumors are flying and smoke-screens are easy to set. It's not yet clear how intensely the teams are pursuing Mathis or what talks his agent, Drew Rosenhaus, is having with the Eagles behind the scenes. The visit to Baltimore, though, is an ominous sign.

It's a situation the Eagles have to watch closely. If they lose Mathis they would suddenly have a new hole to fill and a question mark in an area of strength last season.

Some fool like Dan Snyder will overpay him based on being a on eyear wonder that benefitted greatly from a system. The Eagles aren't going to get in a bidding war for him. Howard Mudd likes undersized interior lineman that can move. There's never a shortage of undersized interior lineman available in rounds 5-7 in the draft.
    Only in Philly...

Can't pay Mathis like he's a star. He is a jounreyman O-Lineman. Like to have him back at the right price.

Who DOESN'T Rosenhaus represent on the Eagles?

He'd be smart to stay with Phila., but at 32 he's obviously gonna go to the high bidder. Eagles are kinda screwed here, especially given the imperative to "win now." They're going to have to overpay to keep him, which raises the question as to why they didn't try to lock up him midway through last season, like they normally tend to do.
I bet there's an interesting game of poker going on between Rosenhaus and Eagles mgmt...

For the sake of continuity, the Eagles should re-sign Mathis...I also agree that the system enhanced his value.

not me, I let him walk if he don't like my price. Plenty of less expensive rookies coming out with new rookie rules and at a lot less money and we get younger. We dont need 32 year old free agent guards if they want big time money. ixnay

Howard Mudd has made a reputation of building OLines out of spare parts. Buyer beware on Mathis. He may be nothing outside this system.

Don't forget about Julian Vandervelde. Howie Mudd may think that Vandervelde can be a good starting guard. Mudd has turned several mid and late round draft picks into good players within his system.

With the 15th pick I wouldn't be surprised if they drafted David DeCastro. His fundamentals are so good he could be an immediate starter.

Don't worry. Roseman has his eyes on a 32 year old Canadian firefighter to fill the hole.

Depth on O line is thin with Mathis, can't lose this guy.

There's a reason he bounced around before finding success in Philly. Mudd made him...just like he made a late round rookie, Kelce. He'll leave for the $$, suck it up, get cut and be out of the league in two years. All the while, he could stay here for a little less and continue with the progress he made last year. Unless of course the Eagles are completely low balling him...which is a distinct possibility with these guys.

Howie has Mathis' replacement already picked out. It's why they moved up positions in the 6th round

With as bad as our O-line has been, we need to keep guys like Mathis! I know he's looking for a payday, so unless he wants ridiculous cash, sign the man! Use Jamaal's cap space!
