Reid not happy about Jackson head butt

POSTED: Monday, December 14, 2009, 2:06 PM

The Eagles aren't saying it, but there's a fairly good chance the team called the league office today to offer some friendly advice about that head butt Giants safety Aaron Ross gave Eagles receiver DeSean Jackson late in the third quarter of last night's 45-38 win.

Ross didn't draw a penalty, although replays clearly showed him hitting Jackson in the face mask with his helmet after an incomplete pass near the Eagles' sideline. It appeared as though Jackson initiated the exchange with some words. Eagles coach Andy Reid said that he had a clear view of the play.

"I'm not going to tell you I was happy about it," Reid said. "But the official ... he wasn't looking at it. That's why he didn't call it."

Reid said that the official closest to the play was focused on the spot so he didn't see the head butt. Still, he thinks the league will make sure the play does not go unnoticed.

"The league takes care of the rest," Reid said.

Reid, meanwhile, offered some updates on injured Eagles players today. Most notably, receiver Jeremy Maclin will miss next week's 49ers game because he tore a strand of the plantar fascia in his left foot. Maclin could miss the following week against the Broncos, as well. The team hasn't made a move yet in terms of adding another receiver because there's a chance Kevin Curtis could finally return from his knee woes.

Tight end Brent Celek has a sore back and defensive end Trent Cole has a hamstring strain. Reid said both injuries were day-to-day. Fullback Leonard Weaver has a slight hamstring strain. Running back Brian Westbrook had no setbacks over the weekend in relation to his concussions. Reid said that he'll wait until Wednesday to see if Westbrook can do more than just practice with the scout team.

In other news, the Eagles-Broncos game on Dec. 27 at the Linc has been pushed back from a 1 p.m. start to a 4:15 p.m. kickoff.

As a big time Reid basher, I must admit he (Marty too) called a great game last night. Loved the call for the deep throw right after the midgets took the lead.

    1) The Eagles play Denver Dec. 27, not this Thursday. 2) Late hits, intentional fouls, unnecessary roughness penalties NEVER get called against Eagles opponents. And the league never reviews them afterwords. Apparently, the Eagles players are expendable to the league, and can be treated like rag dolls by the other team. Case in point: the late hit on McNabb in the end zone at the end of week 1 against Carolina. Very disturbing. Reid should take a fine and insult the league incessantly for this.

What's with Trent Cole being stupid at the end of Giants' games? Anything coming from him and his punches?

Ya. I'm tired of Philly teams always getting treated unfairly. I don't care if people hate Philly, call the games fair. I'm tired of this!

What about Celek being grappled in the end zone?

Immediately after the tackle last night number 66 on the Giants charged at one of the Eagles and punched him in the back before the cameras and, how shockingly, Michaels and Collinsworth started commenting on Cole punching the Giants. But this whole thing was started by 66..I think that's Snee (correct me if im wrong) but its pretty clear in the highlights. Hopefully the league does something about that goon not that it will matter this season for those losers.

The obvious no-call on the P.I. on Celek was total BS. If I'm not mistaken, the Eagles had to settle for a FG after that. That was 4 points the refs stole right there. Then the refs allowed a potential 3 points to be stolen by allowing the clock to run out at the end of the first half. Then the refs stole another 2 points on the safety that should have been called on Manning at the end of the game. His left leg was DOWN (side of the knee made contact in the end zone) BEFORE the ball left his hand. Go back and watch in slow-mo if you don't believe me. So... at minimum, the refs stole 2 points from the Eagles. At maximum, they stole 9 points. This game didn't have to be as close as the refs made it.

While I'm venting. Celek is the man, but what was with the way he left McNabb out to dry by cutting off his route? If he kept going McNabb hits him in stride and Celek could have been off to the races. Instead, McNabb ends up throwing a pick that could have been costly. Oh well... we'll forgive Celek this time (because he's a genuine tough guy and a playmaker) and only give him half the blame. The other half we'll leave on McNabb. **** And what was up with Reggie Brown? That was a nice deep ball that McNabb threw to him. If Reg didn't slow down so early to turn and look for the ball, that would have been a completion that he probabaly could have taken all of the way. Instead Reggie has to lunge for the ball and made it looked like McNabb was often target on the deep ball. McNabb wasn't. Reggie was just slower than he should have been. **** I'm not saying McNabb is perfect - We all know he's not, but it is disgusting to see how bad route-running could have really hurt the Eagles. And let's not even talk about the defense and their tacklign issues. Get it right, guys!

Great game! Unfortunately I missed it, I was out trying to find the defense that somehow got lost. Holy @#$%? they were terrible!! McNabb's a Hall of Famer

This was possibly the worst officiating I've ever seen. Does anyone notice how black QB's rarely get any calls, i.e roughing the passer? All you have to do is put a helmet anywhere near Tom Bradys chest and there's an instant flag, but you can hit McNabb 3 seconds after releasing the ball and nothing. Oh, and is it me or was Eli laying on his side when he threw that pass to Bradshaw in the fourth quarter? Should of been a sack. It definitely seems lke the Eagles have to beat their opponents and the refs week in and week out!

Looks like Mr. "knighn" has spewed forth most of what I wanted to say....except this: As pug-ugly as it was, it was a freaking W I N !!!! Against a Divisional opponent....in THEIR house!.....after they had beaten the Cowboys(!), and were feeling really GOOOD about themselves.....with some of our guys hurt, and others stepping back in....with a defense that couldn't stop a runny nose....So Thanks go out to D-Jack for his individual brilliance on the touchdowns, and to Mc5 for quarterbacking a GREAT game, and for the maligned O-Line for the protections and the blocking.

Other bad no-call of the night, besides the hit on Jackson, was the should-have-been TD pass to Celek. He got held, then interfered with twice, all by the same defender. He was right to wave his hand, looking for a flag.

Why no mention of Vick here? He looked really good. All of a sudden the eagles third and short/short and goal issues have gone away... Thanks in large part to Vick, spares McNabb a pounding too.

knighn, I think the Celek play deserves 50/50 blame. I don't think he expected McNabb to throw it there because it was covered so he went to the open space. It's a miscue that they need to shore up. NFL QB's and receivers do that all the time, it's just chemistry.

Then there was that lame review by the refs on an obviously completed pass to Jackson when the Eagles were moving the ball downfield and about to score again. It looked to me like the refs were purposefully trying to break the Eagle's momentum

Phillies 1120 - Snee is 76. Diehl is 66. Collinsworth is worthless. How many replays did we see of Eli going down before the fumble w/o one of them showing the view in front of Eli - Green & White coming strong. Get WYSP in sync with the TV somehow - please!

Lots of non-calls (on both sides) by the refs last night. And what is it w/ the Eagles propensity for throwing the ball 40-50 yards downfield on 3rd and 4 (or shorter) downs? That kind of play-calling gives me grey hairs. But the win feels sweet, fo' sho. And dang, that DeSean Jackson is wicked fast. Don't know if I'ver seen a faster pro football player...

He didn't break off his route. He read the coverage and McNabb didn't. He can't run through the defender.

You know the first thing a ref will ask is "Can you police officers protect us if we call a penalty against the Giants."

What about the other missed calls such as the fumbled kickoff at the end of the half, the interference on Celek in the endzone and tackle who moved before the snap on the Giants. All 3 calls were easy to see.

I think all that needs to be said about the missed deep throw to Reggie Brown is that if it was DeSean Jackson on the other end of that pass instead of Brown it would have been a touchdown.

The officiating was terrible. They did everything they could in the first half to try and keep the Giants in the game. Oh, and the announcers sucked too. Did anyone else get sick of hearing what the standings and tiebreakers would be if the Giants won?

The refs were brutal; what about tbe Quinton Mikel phantom call; the Giants blatant offside when the tackle jumped AND moving the ball back like 10 yards when McNabb was hit from behind and almost threw a pick......WTF...Thanks for the laugh Jim715.....

knighn, I agree with both your points. Celek gets a pass though I'm not sure why he did that but I too thought Brown was dogging it on that deep ball and meant to ask others yesterday if they saw what I saw. Glad you brought it up. Add that to previous drops this year and Brown wonders why he doesn't play more?

Hey Pizza - As bad as Reggie can look on TV, he can look even worse when you're at the game. I was at the Redskins game (the last one, the come-from-behind win) and was getting upset at watching Reggie take his dear, sweet time getting back to the huddles (after DeSean was concussed). This is while the Eagles are trying to mount a comeback and go for a win! You can't show any urgency in that situation, Reggie?! Reggie should be gone after this season, even if Kevin Curtis is, too.

MIKEZ: BS! The defender was way behind Celek; had he made his cut inside, it would have been an easy catch with yards to go. Celek actually did not run a route at all on that play. He just turned around after his block and looked stunned. I think Celek is awesome, but I have to call it the way I see it.

Bigbadrookie - That's the way I saw it, too. I re-watched almost the entire game last night - I didn't get to watch the game closely enough on Sunday night and wanted to take a closer look. Celek looks like he should have kept going. I give him half a pass - if he was another TE that we were all too used to, he wouldn't have even been playing, and he would have dropped the TD that was thrown right to him, and probably would have fumbled the ball at some point, too.

Reggie Brown has made a few mistakes , but also some nice big cathes too. It's nice to have a reserve like him that knows the offense. He is not much of a dropoff after Maclin, just not as fast. The Eagles depth has paid off this year.
