Reid: Too early to decide on Westbrook

POSTED: Monday, November 16, 2009, 12:12 PM

Where does Brian Westbrook rank among Eagles running backs all-time?
He’s No. 1.
Second behind Wilbert Montgomery
Second behind Steve Van Buren
Third behind those two

Eagles coach Andy Reid said that it was "too early" to decide if Brian Westbrook, who suffered his second concussion in three weeks yesterday, was done for the season.

"The important thing is that we get him analyzed, tested and taken care of," Reid said. "And we'll go from there. Not that we didn't do that before."

The Eagles running back got injured in the third quarter of the Eagles' 31-23 loss at San Diego. It occured on a screen play in which he was sandwiched in between a block by Jason Avant and a Chargers defender. "It was another big hit," Reid said.

Replays showed Westbrook getting up normally and casually tossing the football to the officials. Reid said that Westbrook didn't suffer any memory loss.

"He was foggy," Reid said. "He stood up and walked off the field, but you could sense that there was something wrong there."

Westbrook has now suffered two concussions over the last three weeks. The first one occured at Washington when the running back was knocked unconscious for close to a minute. Reid was asked about the severity of a second concussion.

"It's obviously not a good thing that the second one happened there," he said.

Reid said that he had no regrets about letting Westbrook play because doctors had cleared him to play.

"There was a chance he could have played the week before, but we held him out," he said. "He was symptom free."

As for other injury-related news, cornerback Sheldon Brown has a hamstring strain and was getting an MRI today. His status for Sunday's game at Chicago is up in the air. Tackle Jason Peters was held out of the game with an ankle sprain. He had an MRI that revealed the sprain as just mild, Reid said.

"He should be able to get back out there," Reid said.

Safety Quintin Demps missed the Chargers game with an ankle sprain. Reid, for the first time, called it the dreaded "high ankle sprain." Reid said that wide receiver Kevin Curtis (knee) is continuing to improve.

WewantaSBRing Bro, Westbrook was our ONLY OFFENSE for at least 3 years. He carried this team. He was the heart of this team. You are so dumb. Just flat out dumb. Why are Eagles fans so stupid? I am an Eagles fan my whole life but really Eagles fans are the dumbest people in sports.

Don't forget that "Concussion" is a nice way to sugarcoat a "Traumatic Brain Injury" and they take a long time to recover from (assuming a full recovery is possible). In my opinion, he should not risk his long term physical and mental health to return this season. The Eagles should put him on IR for the rest of the season and revisit this before training camp next summer. If they can put Shawn Andrews on IR for back pain / lack of heart, so they owe it to Brian Westbrook to give him the rest of the year off also.

I don't understand why anyone would say that Westbrook is soft. He was our entire offense for years and was a huge part of the team's turnaround. Maybe these are the same people who say a guy who plays on a broken ankle and faces 300 pound men with a broken rib has no heart. I'd like to see some of these guys do a fraction of what these players do.

Football is not a game where you can have two concussions in a month. Hang up the spikes Brian. You don't want to end up like Andre Waters.

The important thing is that BWest is going to be okay in the future....Macho idiots can be haters and show their ignorance but Brian's future is far more important than the game.....Get a life folks...

put a folk in him-he's done! Brian-take the money and run,you earned it for many years of saving donnie boy from the critics. No use ending up like a Joe Frazier or some other punch drunk. As for the great head coach and the star QB going to correct it, going to commnuncate better, going to fix it, going to take a look at it, going to watch films today(probably the food channel film special for Andy and Bozo the clown goes to Hollywood for McNabb),then going to prepare for the big homecoming in Chicago-HA-Same old, Same old.

"There was a chance he could have played the week before, but we held him out," he said. "He was symptom free." Yeah, he was symptom free from the concussion, but not from the minor ankle work he had done, for swelling!

Time to consider other available RB's. McCoy is getting better, but he needs time to mature. But the real problem is play selection that includes use of RB and FB. Time to adjust the play calls.

Agree or not, this is why they do no like to re-work contracts. Yes he was underpaid for what he had done, but now he will be way overpaid for what he will be able to do. So maybe it all works out in the end anyway.

BWest should take the rest of the year off. This team is toast this year anyway. Too many injuries. Let the rookies get seasoned a year, let the injuries heal, let McNabb go & look forward to next year. There will be enough talent as long as the birdbrained coaching calls don't get in the way. I liked watching the clock tick off again yesterday with no time-outs.....didn't something similar to that happen recently? Same mistakes, week-in & week-out. Poor play balance, poor clock management, etc. etc. etc. They have done a decent job of picking talent lately.

Getting another running back for this team would be like buying a car so you can continue to take the bus to work.

Eagles suck...Reid MUST go!!! McDork shouldn't be that far behind. So many good coaches out there they could get right now after the season but stupid Lurie and co. won't do it as long as the birds are competitive...lol...give me a break! It was so nice watching a real football game last night between the Colts and Pats. Coach took a chance and they lost, Colts could have gotten the ball back at their own 1 and they still would have drove down the field to score. Nice to see a head coach with those kind of guts something you will never see out of fat boy Reid. He would probably be thinking of how many burgers he will be downing after the game since all his timeouts were already used up!!! Thanks for the memories #36 but concussions are no joke. Ride off in the sunset as healthy as you can and enjoy your millions.

How can Reid be hesitant to say Brian's season is over? The guy sustained 2 concussions in a month!! His season is over for the sake of his own health. They rushed him back too quickly the first time and now his career is in serious jeopardy.

A concussion is a serious thing. Once the brain cells are damaged, they never heal. We must think of Westbrook's health first, and everything else second. Think replacement, and think fast. The Eagles need a RB who can punch through consistently. That extra yard cost Reid two games already.

p-diddy - the real loser is Andy Reid and us fans who were promised every summer for the last 11 years that this was the year for a Superbowl. The team is a joke, the game plans are a joke and the biggest joke is we still have faith that they could miraculously win it. So I guess we are losers and jokers. Football season in Philly sucks. The only winner in town is TEMPLE - Go Owls!

Backaches and Headaches can't be proved. I wonder if Westbrook learned from Andrews how to get paid millions and not play a lick. look for Samuels to give it a try next. How about pulled braids?

BWest is the man. He was the whole team for a few years and took the physical abuse that went along with it. As much as I hate to see him go, it just isn't worth the rest of his life.

Fork in the road #36, as hard as it may be, do yourself right and call it a year, see how you feel next year, Eagles aren't going anywhere this year,

Westy may return, but he'll be completely ineffective. He's done. Soon after he got his big contract, he spent more time in the hospital than on the field.

Brian Westbrook was an integral part of this team for many years and took over many games single handedly in his earlier years. I hope that Brian takes the rest of the season to really think about this and make the best decision for himself, his future and his family. We've already seen one ex-eagle blow his brains out from these things. Throughout his career, Brian Westbrook has been a model citizen, team-mate and running back. He took both wins and losses with maturity, humility and above all, class. Good Luck Brian, I hope that in 20 years, when I'm retired, I get to see you on the sidelines at the games with all of your faculties and personality intact. Thanks for the great memories

I've said it all year...retire! Besides John Riggins no RB ever had their best season after 30. This guy is way to banged up to keep at. Leave while you can walk and talk. It is brutal game. He can leave the game proud of his efforts and accomplishments.

anyone calling Westbrook simply has no clue. the man has been the Eagles offense for years. let's hope he's not hurt so bad that he can't go somewhere and win a Super Bowl ring. that won't happen in Philly with Reid around

I thought the Eagles should have made a play for LJ after the Chiefs cut him. Even though he is a P.O.S. i think he still would have helped us here. KC is a terrible squad and he was playing down to their potential, probably to get traded or released.
