Reid: McDermott will be back

POSTED: Monday, January 10, 2011, 1:44 PM

Can the Eagles win a Super Bowl with Michael Vick at quarterback?
Yes.
No.

Andy Reid said that defensive coordinator Sean McDermott will be back next season for the Eagles.

"You're dealing with a guy that's a tremendous worker and is a very smart individual," Reid said Monday, the day after the Eagles' season ended with a 21-16 loss to the Packers in the playoffs. "And so, I look at it a little bit different than you do. In that I've seen him work with young guys, I've seen him work through injuries, I've seen him stay positive through those situations, and still put us in a position to win football games.

"And know that he's going to do nothing but improve as a coach, just like all of us, with experience. I got a lot of respect for him and the way he does business."

McDermott, in his second season in charge of the defense, had to deal with a number of significant injuries to his unit. He lost six of his 11 starters at various points in the season. But even McDermott would have to admit that his defense underperformed this season. It allowed 31 passing touchdowns -- the worst number in Reid's 12 seasons -- and had the worst red zone percentage in the NFL since 1988.

"The problems? You can't say the scheme because they give you a play and you have to go out there and execute it," Eagles linebacker Moise Fokou said. "And if you want to blame it on personnel, then blame it on the player. But I don't think it was ... I don't know. You got me stuck. We just didn't execute as well as we thought we would. I think we had some shining moments here and there."

But what if the scheme isn't right?

"Come on, the scheme's not always going to be perfectly correct," Fokou said. "Sometimes you're going to make a mistake here and there and things are going to happen. You're never going to play a perfect game. Let me put it like that."

McDermott rose up through the ranks with the Eagles under Reid. Initially an assistant to Reid, McDermott then became a defensive coach, working mostly with linebackers and the secondary, until he was named coordinator in July, 2009 shortly before his predecessor, Jim Johnson, died.

We will never have a good defense with McDermott as our defensive cordinator. This guy is absolutely horrible. He can't make adjustments in games. In fact he is the number one reason we have had early playoff exits the last two seasons. We have the worst redzone defense in the history of the NFL, yet we are going to keep him? This guy is a joke! We will never win a superbowl this way. Why can't we switch the a 3-4 defense? I'm tired of this undersized defense that always comes up short in big games!

A big part of the problem is that the Eagles are just TOO SMALL ON BOTH SIDES OF THE BALL! When you can't get a decent pass rush going vs. a good QB your secondary is going to have a l-o-n-g day. That said, coming in dead last in Red Zone D (and worst % since 1988 to boot) should be grounds for dismissal. Think about that for minute - the worst Red Zone D in 22 years!!!

Its good to see that Andy treats his interns well and stays loyal the 5 or 6 years he will need to grow into the position. Im also happy to see that Rory Seagrest has officially failed at two coaching positions. As the D-line coach, I guess there was no talent to be found in 2010 pro bowlers Cleamons and Babin.

This says it all....I knew about Babin...and saw that talent last year....but didnt know about Clemons...23.5 sacks between them....good thing we kept Parker...what a shame...put them two on this club and this Dee is on point!

Why is Howie Roseman not getting talked about. His draft last year turned out to be a disaster. Graham was so so to begin with and tore his ACL (should of picked Earl Thomas) Nate Allen was decent but he tore his patella. Now those two won't 100% until 2012. Then he [Roseman] spends a million picks on undersized DL who didn't even sniff the field. Every trade or FA they brought in was a bust. Simms, Tapp, Jackson It's not all Mcdermott's fault. This defense aside from Asante has zero playmakers. McDermott can't expect to work miracles with 2nd rate players. This organization needs a football minded "GM" not some fancy pants bean counter that helps the team win the salary cap super bowl every year. If the seriously want to be Super Bowl contenders next season they better pull off some trades and finally bring in some FA's that are studs. Signing CB Nnamdi Asomugha would be a great start...

you nailed it. someone in the front office needs to have some accountability over these drafts. you cannot win in this league with a bunch of 230-270 lb defensive lineman. McDermott may not be the best defensive coordinator in the league but he could have more talent to work with.

Reid has to go first, no new head coach would keep Mcdermott. Face it the Eagles are just going to be losers with Reid there.

@ player - I disagree, not every player was as pitiful as Wells. I feel Tapp exceeded expectations, which did not include being the first option at the DE position. Agree regarding the Graham and Allen picks, not a fan of either of those guys and Allen is less of an impact player as either of the comparable first round safetys. See Graham as a future bust.

Was also hoping to wake up to reading McDerMUTT having been handed his walking papers...he is a huge weakness, IMO. I don't want to hear about injuries, Johnson had a 300+lb Levan Kirkland as MLB one year, replacements such as Mike Labinjo and the always popular banjo man out there so...EVERYBODY has injuries...every team.
Must get better at all defensive back positions, very weak starters.

McDermott was not the problem with the defense. It is the front office and the coach not having playmakers on the defense for the defensive coordinator to work with. Reid knows the team needs to upgrade the talent on the defense that is why he is keeping McDermott. However, heading into the strike year, will the Eagles try to upgrade the personnel on defense? This was the worst defense talent wise since Reid was hired as the Eagles coach.

@ChrisM: Not a single DE on this roster could play in a 3-4...they're all too small. Plus, they don't have 3 decent LBs to put on the field at once, much less 4. They'd have to get a whole new front 7 to switch to a 3-4.

I have been a huge Reid supporter since he got here. I don't really care for the pass only game plan but it works most of the time. But, He has to see that Mcdermott is not ready for his position yet. For the love of god, if you must keep the slug at least order him to evaluate his game plans and make better adjustments throughout the games. If the players are the problem then fix it Mcdermott. If this defense looks the same next year, I will be forced to switch to the Reid haters club if no change is made. I would like to see a SB win at least once before I die. I hopefully have about 40 years left in me so hopefully that will be enough time for you Andy Reid.

Come on Andy, send him back to DB coach. There were 7 head coaches fired this year, had to be one decent Def coordinator in the bunch. Maybe Del Rio gets the ax and we can get him. And yes, they really blew it with Babin and Clemons. I guess they were too physically large to play DE for the miget DE Eagles.

When it comes to Roseman as GM, I still laugh at that. They reached for Graham when the guy I was dying for was Marquise Pouncey and sure enough he is a rookie starting in the pro bowl at center. Imagine having a running game with a center who is proven. Dont worry, we will get another free agent signing to take that position.

Former players from last year's roster Jason Babin now with Tennessee had 12.5 sacks on way to making the pro bowl and Chris Clemons had 11 sacks for Seattle. Paging Sean McDermott, will you please explain those two moves to the fans? Time was when Jimmy Johnson was coach that former Eagle defenders faded into oblivion. Now apparently they have break out seasons and make pro bowls.

Blaming McDermott for the defensive struggles is like building a Ferrari with Kia parts and wondering why it doesn't reach 180 mph on the highway. Not once in Jim Johnson's tenure did he ever have so little to work with from a personnel standpoint. Not once, not even close. Get the guy some actual players on that side of the ball, THEN evaluate him

why is everyone acting so surprised? mcdermott calls the defense like andy and marty calls the offense. cant make in game adjustments, cant score or keep anyone from scoring in the redzone, ignore the run game totally. on both sides of the ball, score or give up alot of points. this is how andy reid teams r built.andy puts together competitve teams, but as long as we keep reid or he keeps this same philosophy (which he will)...eagles will never win a championship. I will keep cheering my eagles no matter who the coach or players are..just cant wait for this reid era to be done with..its the same old story every single season his run/pass ratio. challenging at the wrong times, using all timeouts in the first quater. cant make in game adjustments...drafting and signing undersized linemen, picking up 3rd tier players and making them starters..making players switch to a different position they never played before... what qb is getting traded and whose staying....etc.. its the same act and its getting really old. glad i dont go to any of their games. to every poster on here..there isnt going to be any changes or any real upgrade so yall can put ya lil wishlists away cause andy is not going to do any of what u guys r asking.

For those who want to turn the Eagles into the Redskins... thanks Andy. He may not do what you want or what you think he should do... but there is one thing he does almost every year... win. Andy Reid is consistent and he wins. He does what he knows and stays with it no matter what! Give him some credit the man has not won a Super Bowl but we at least have a chance every year.

step 1. sign Nnamdi A. or J. Joseph or Logan Mankins
step 2. Do not resign Sims. Replace with Chaney/Clayton/Homeless guy.
step 3. 1st Rd pick on Versatile interior OL(if we sign a CB) or a CB if we sign Mankins
step 3. Pray Mornhinweg gets hired by cleveland
step 4. Tell McDermott these are football players not Rhodes scholars and simplify the overall scheme.

TheCuz I'm not suggesting he is a flawless defensive coordinator, but the truth is he simply can't maximize the schemes and blitz packages he may want to use, given the inexperience and overall lack of talent he has to work with. And yes, their red-zone defense was horrific all season long, but McDermott also didn't turn his back on the guy he was covering in the end zone -- that was Samuel on GB's 1st TD. McDermott also didn't completely whiff on an easy tackle on the screen pass TD, that was Patterson. And McDermott also wasn't inexplicably standing 8 yards deep in the end zone on James Jones' TD despite nobody else being in the area, that too was Asante, who had probably his worst game as an Eagle. Point is, at the end of the day the players on the field have to make the plays

i admire loyalty as much as the next guy, but at some point you have to look at the numbers. mcdermott has produced horrible numbers. horrible. the red zone defense is actually embarrassing- GB didn't break a sweat to score. same deal all season. other teams deal with young players and injuries and still can stop teams more than one of four trips. in almost any business he would be fired or demoted after 2 disasterous years. winning yesterday would only have prevented a loss in a week or so. AR talks constantly about putting players in a position to succeed. how about putting the whole team in that position with a huge upgrade in defensive coaching. strangely, the team has no loyalty to ageing veterans such as dawkins or mcnabb (and i concur) but has huge loyalty to a failed defensive coordinator.

This is the only franchise that takes 10 years to find out when something doesnt work ,,,Of course they should keep a guy that runs the worst red zone defence of all time.. Im also tired of Reid saying week to week, year to year that they will learn from thier mistakes,,,,Lurie will be making a mistake if he keeps the same old bullheaded coaches and players running this team,.. But facts are facts,,, Maybe after ten more years of failing we will find out that it isnt the players afterall.....But I doubt it,,,,Lurie is coming up short again for his fans and this city.... Not demanding the best starts at the top.... Lurie is an average owner so we got a average coaching staff with average players, running average plays,,, thank god he has above average fans,,,or he would of pulled the plug along time ago if the fans stopped buying tickets,,,,Maybe thats the secret.. If the drunk stupid diehard eagles fans stop buying tickets we will get better.....naaaaaaaaaaaa !
but its just a thought,,,just to prove my point,,,lurie and reid put an excon at qb ,, and you all thought he was better than mcnabb,,, what a bunch of losers,,,,,,same old song and dance my friends....i hope there isnt any football next year,,,,but i got a feeling the dumb diehard eagles fan will still end up at the stadium on game day anyway... they been cheering for nothing for years,,.

jeff wants mcdermott to stay for his personal reasons so just because reid says that mcdermott will be back, he'll put it down as big news for him. reid's going to say that and not throw anyone on the bus and with the way he was saying it, it sounds like he's going to be gone. dont listen to jeff, he's one sided with the organization

Reid is the village idiot and how does he have the authority to unilaterally decide who will be the d-coordinator next year? Hey Andy keep draftig those fastballers and have no name running rbs like Starks cut you up. Graham and Teo-Nesheim and on and on and on with the fastballers because Andy Reid does not know it is a violent game of intimidation -- he thinks it is a chess game. Guys like Clemons and Babin move on to other teams and dominate because they are allowed to try to blow up the backfield rather than be relegated to the role of dropping into coverage or hanging around the line of scrimmage. This si the same Andy Reid who trades high 2nd round picks to move up in the first round and then ends up with a roster that is horrible on the offensive line and at cb. He acts like he is one player away when he has right tackles that could not block me and cbs of Pop Warner quality. Redid shoudl be fired today so we get back to physical and intimidating defense and throw the opposition around offense.

You always hear that the coaches are loyal to the guys who start the year as #1s. Well they should be playing the BEST player , not the guy who looked to be the best guy in preseason. That is one big problem, especially on the Eagles. Babin was pretty good last year, when the coaches put him in. I would rather see continuous competition for all positions on the field and the best player in the game than all this loyality and inferior play.

1 truth about Big Red: He lies.

so, i will not be disappointed yet. McD deserves to be fired. Injuries or not, the Eagles D was not well prepared for most of the season. If this team had the defense of the Packers it would have been 15-1 this season. If indeed McDamnit (usually what i end up saying after the opposing team converts another 3rd and long) stays, then it continues the cycle of my waning interest in Eagles football.

Before McDermott would go I will expect Jeff "money matters" Lurie to first get rid of Andy Reid and Marty Morhninweg or whatever his name. Once again, Andy and Marty has shown that they can alway be out-coached and rely heavily on big plays to succeed forgetting the fact that little gains will open the door for big plays. This is not the defense and it's not Vick....this rests heavily on Andy Reid. I'm even surprised he has the guts to say who is staying or who's not. Until Jeff Lurie starts running this team like the Phillies run their team, nothing will ever come out of this Andy Reid coached nonsense.....the players completely did what they were told to do.

it was a football game, get over it. WE LOST. The best team won on that day. The defense gave up 21 flippin points, against one of the best offenses in the NFL. Watch the NFL network, see how many categories that GB leads in. No, it's not the defense, the offense should have scored at least 30. Dumb plays from the start, no protection. Same as always. Offensive line in flux since preseason. Keep the center and left side, draft the rest. Give vick time, he puts up 59, no time and you get 16. Wake up. This one was easy, with the right protection. Draft O-line Andy, Defense is fine

    and another thing...

i've been saying for years that there is very little accountability in this organization. Reid creates a nice happy atmosphere in which the players feel comfortable enough to get to the playoffs each year, but there seems to be little drive to accomplish much more. The Reid teams always seem to lack tenacity or a killer instinct like the Steelers, Patriots, and Ravens of the world. McDermitt did a sh**ty job this year, oh...no problem, come back next year buddy, we'll get it right. This continues the message of "that's good enough." For these reasons the Eagles will always be a second-tier team.

After the Eagles lost to the Cowboys last year, I posted on here that not one of the Eagles starting linebackers would start for any of the the playoff teams. I still maintain that opinion this year. We don't know how good McDermott is. He's got 7th round rookie draft picks playing for him. He has to play who he's dealt. The team let go Babin, who was an All Pro this year, and Clemons of Seattle who had like 11 sacks both ends we could have used. But the team trades up to draft Graham.McDermoott didn't do this. He didn't trade for Sims, or let Dawkins go, to have Harris or Demps play free safety last year. We can't possibly know how good is with these brilliant moves.

I hope they do change DC and the oline coach should go also.I think we had a better year then expected but we could/should be still playing.Alot of weak areas but not gloom and doom !!
