Andy Reid confirmed what many Eagles fans had hoped: Nick Foles is his backup quarterback.
"He's in that position right now," Reid said Tuesday.
There are a few qualifiers to Reid's statement. First, Mike Kafka, currently listed second on the depth chart behind Michael Vick, will not play in Thursday night's preseason finale against the New York Jets. So, technically speaking, Foles is the No. 2 because he will start against the Jets.
"Yeah, right now, that's what he is," Reid said, when ask to clarify his original answer. "He's the one that's going to start the game."
Foles will start and play the first quarter, Reid said. Trent Edwards will play the final three quarters.
Kafka "got a little work in" during practice Tuesday, Reid said. But the quarterback's broken left, non-throwing hand was still tender.
"I'm going to hold him out unless something drastically changes," Reid said.
Kafka's future on the team has become cloudy. The Eagles must trim the roster to 53 by Friday. Reid will keep three quarterbacks. Vick and Foles are slam dunks. The final spot will go to either Kafka or Edwards.
Reid was asked if he's seen enough out of Kafka, who took only nine snaps in the preseason.
"I got enough time with him here to make that evaluation," Reid said. "The main thing for him right now is it's just tender right now. He took some snaps yesterday and he could feel them. It's best we hold him out."

- Reid tipped his hand with several references to Kafka's injured hand. Kafka will not play because he is headed for the injured list. This is a delay tactic that Reid can use for several games while still keeping all four QBs. As soon as Vick gets hurt, Kafka's injury is suddenly gone and the four QB problem is resolved.— Carlos2

- With all this talent on the Eagles offense, all they need a pure distributor (Foles) at the helm. They have home run hitters at WR with Desean and Maclin. They have a home run hitter at RB with Shady. They have a great TE with Celek. So many weapons. Probably the most talent we will ever see for a really long time. They just need a QB who can maximize everyone's potential. Putting another home run hitter at QB with Vick is overkill. He can't read defenses and make accurate throws. Watch the tape. It's time Philadelphia sees how someone is truly supposed to play the position. How many Super Bowl's does Eli Manning have to win before we realize it takes a pocket passing QB to win a championship.— bdd5014

- -bdd5014 I agree about Vick, once the Vikings figured out he couldn't read a corner or safety blitz with a mush rush 4 as they stay in their lanes he's done squat and he'll continue to do squat. We have a roster stocked with play makers and Mike Vick running for 80 and throwing for 175 just doesn't get it done against good teams. Unfortunately for us they already gave Vick the big contract so whether he deserves it or not he's going to start. The best hope we have is like Kolb he goes down hard early and we can get a real QB in there.— TrollExterminator

- I remember back in the day at the vet we used to chant "don't hurt Phil" in reference to not hurting Phil Simms who had a pretty slow start to his career and was fairly injury prone. We wanted Phil in the game to ensure an Eagles win. Now I can envision Defense Coord. telling their Defenses not to hurt Vick in order to keep Foles from coming in as his backup. - With the wide receivers that the Eagles have, they clearly need a QB who can get them the ball. Kafka and his noodle arm clearly is not that guy. Maybe Andy can put him on the PUP list and re-evaluate the QB situation at Week 6, but I doubt he'd do that. He'll want to give Kafka a fair chance to hook on with another team.— SteveS11
